Show moreHuman milk composition is variable. The identification of influencing factors and interdependencies of components may help to understand the physiology of lactation. In this study, we analyzed linear trends in human milk composition over time, the variation across different European countries and the influence of maternal celiac disease. Within a multicenter European study exploring potential prevention of celiac disease in a high-risk population (PreventCD), 569 human milk samples were donated by women from five European countries between 16 and 163 days postpartum. Some 202 mothers provided two samples at different time points. Protein, carbohydrates, fat and fatty acids, insulin, adiponectin, and insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II) were analyzed. Milk protein and n-6 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids decreased during the first three months of lactation. Fatty acid composition was significantly influenced by the country of residence. IGF-II and adiponectin concentrations correlated with protein content (r = 0.24 and r = 0.35), and IGF-II also correlated with fat content (r = 0.36), suggesting a possible regulatory role of IGF in milk macronutrient synthesis. Regarding the impact of celiac disease, only the level in palmitic acid was influenced by this disease, suggesting that breastfeeding by celiac disease mothers should not be discouraged. Show less

Show moreMany inter-State and intra-State conflicts in Africa become more complex by being extended into 'proxy wars', i.e. secondary, often 'low intensity' armed conflicts, pursued in the context of a major power struggle, or outright wars between States carried out by subsidiary or co-opted insurgent movements, usually of an ethno-regional nature. In the Horn of Africa, the proxy war phenomenon is visible owing to alliances behind the scenes, the involvement of neighbouring countries, and frequent changes of allegiance. The proxy war strategy was pursued by both players in the 1998-2000 border war between Ethiopia and Eritrea, not only in the enemy country but also in neighbouring States. Since the peace agreement of June 2000, the importance and impact of the proxy war factor has declined somewhat, but whether this decline will contribute to the building of a 'lasting peace' is not at all certain. The experience of tenuous negotiation during the past two years seems to indicate otherwise. The author argues that the threat of regional instability by proxy conflict remains, as long as the Ethiopian and Eritrean regimes are unwilling to make real peace with each other. Show moreThis chapter examines the ways in which scholars have considered African wars of liberation. Firstly, the author considers some of the general assumptions which have been commonly applied to African history since the middle of the twentieth century when academic historical writing on Africa began, and which have served as a framework for the consideration of wars of liberation. One of these assumptions is that the colonial period was some sort of dividing line in Africa's historical evolution. In the late 1960s, militant nationalism was seen as the fruition of a spirit of resistance which had been present throughout the colonial period, and which now emerged to claim the leadership of African countries; in this view the emergence of African nationalism as a political force marked some sort of progress. The author shows the weakness of this theory and stresses the fact that certain Africans who, on the verge of independence, faced the prospect of government by the group that had seized power in the name of the nation, all too often had reason to fear the hegemonic aspirations of their new leaders. The burgeoning number of armed movements in Africa since has made scholars sceptical about so-called wars of liberation. The question raised today is to what extent African nationalism has been a foreign creation as well as an African one. The author points to a recent attempt to retrace the history of Europe in the twentieth century without viewing it through any particular ideological prism and suggests that the same technique could usefully should be applied to the history of Africa's decolonization.
