Healthy ageing in older adults: an exploration of interactions between lifestyle, immune, metabolic, and gut microbial health
As populations age, older adults face increasing risks of metabolic decline, muscle loss, and gut health disruptions. The VOILA intervention addresses these challenges as the overarching study of this thesis, combining targeted nutrition, structured physical activity, and the novel MetaboHealth score to deliver a personalized approach to healthy aging.
VOILA’s design is informed by multiple lines of evidence. Analyses from the UK Biobank and Lifelines cohorts show that regular physical activity supports muscle health and gut microbial diversity. Findings from the PERSON study highlight metabolic heterogeneity and the value of stratifying individuals using the MetaboHealth score to optimize dietary and lifestyle interventions. A systematic review further identifies sleep as an important, yet often overlooked, factor influencing gut health and inflammation.
