Show moreThis thesis focuses on the social dimensions of crane and wetland conservation in rural landscapes in Kenya, Uganda and Zimbabwe. The focus is predominantly on the Grey Crowned Crane although one chapter is dedicated to social dimensions of Wattled Crane conservation. Chapter 2 provides an overview of how social factors influence wetland management decision-making, drawing linkages between human actions and ecological changes associated with crane habitat loss. Chapter 3 outlines major human actions that impact Wattled Cranes and their habitats, elaborating the underlying social causations behind the actions. Chapter 4 draws lessons on the effectiveness of community-led conservation approaches through an evaluation of a community-led project in Kenya. Chapter 5 presents results of an evaluation of the institutional development process and the ensuing environmental conservation impacts at three sites where conservation projects were initiated in 2002 in Uganda. Chapter 6 synthesises key findings, addressing the question of what works for cranes and wetland conservation in rural landscapes in East and Southern Africa. The thesis contributes to an improved understanding of interactions between cranes and rural communities and provides insights into strategic approaches for addressing the decline of cranes within their range in East and Southern Africa. Show moreIn het gebied tussen de Oude Rijn en de Nieuwe Maas in de huidige provincie Zuid-Holland bevond zich gedurende de eerste drie eeuwen van onze jaartelling het bestuursdistrict van de rurale gemeenschap van de Cananefates (de civitas Cananefatium). De vorming van deze gemeenschap, alsmede de veranderingen die binnen de identiteit van deze groep plaatsvonden zijn onderzocht door middel van een systematische analyse van de aanwezige archeologische resten. Om de rol van de Romeinse staat in deze processen te duiden, zijn ook de stedelijke en militaire gemeenschappen in de analyse betrokken. Op deze manier is een overzicht ontstaan van een landschappelijke en administratieve regio waarbij aspecten als de interactie tussen de verschillende groepen, het karakter van de rurale gemeenschappen en het contrast met andere rurale groepen langs de grenzen van het Romeinse rijk bestudeerd konden worden. Show moreThe main objective of this thesis is to improve understanding of the role of helminth infections in the development of insulin resistance (IR), hence Type 2 Diabetes (T2D), in the light of increasing urbanization in Indonesia. Our large-scale cluster-randomized controlled trial was performed in a rural area of Indonesia, which is endemic for soil-transmitted helminth (STH), and has been previously reported to have a low prevalence of IR and T2D. In STH-infected subjects, as assessed by microscopy, 12-month anthelmintic treatment increased IR, which was mediated by an increase in BMI and leptin to adiponectin ratio, as well as reduction in eosinophil count. Next, we also aimed to assess the different metabolic profile between populations living in rural and urban area, and to study the relative protective effect of rural environment to high-fat diet (HFD). In comparison to those living in rural area, individuals living in urban area had higher whole body IR, which was mainly mediated by the higher adiposity and leptin level, which were progressively increased with increased duration of time spent in urban area. Different environmental factors (including past or current exposure to STH) did not seem to affect the metabolic response to HFD intervention, independent from adiposity. Show less
