Show moreDit rapport is het resultaat van een verkennend onderzoek naar de culturele achtergronden van de handel in Nigeriaanse meisjes die naar Nederland komen om in de prostitutie te gaan werken. Een belangrijke overeenkomst in de verhalen die deze meisjes de Nederlandse politie vertellen betreft de 'voodoo'-rituelen waaraan zij voor vertrek naar Nederland worden onderworpen. In het rapport komen de volgende vragen aan de orde: wat doen handelaren met denkbeelden van 'voodoo'? Hoe creëren zij daarmee een sfeer van angst en intimidatie? Hoe komt het dat dit voor de meisjes evenzeer een werkelijkheid wordt als dat in de sinistere betekenis van het woord ook voor velen in de Nederlandse samenleving het geval is? Het rapport stelt dat 'voodoo' in de Nigeriaanse praktijk niet bestaat (er is wel een aantal andere rituele praktijken waar op wordt ingegaan) en in de Nederlandse situatie een goed begrip van de omstandigheden verhindert. Show moreThe purpose of this chapter is to explore the extent to which violence can be said to underlie any form of Stae formation in precolonial Africa. This is done by examining the role of violence in State formation in west central Zambia from the 17th century onwards. The chapter shows that State formation in west central Zambia entailed the imposition upon local village communities of a more or less centralized sociopolitical structure, representing a departure from the social organization and ideology prevailing in pre-State times. In the specific context of the expansion of Lunda political culture over much of south central Africa, the typical form of Statehood that emerged had two salient features: perpetual kinship and positional succession, neither of which corresponded with structural themes in local village society. The chapter compares the cultural logic of the village and that of the royal court in more detail, arguing that the latter completely ignored the former. Show moreAprès avoir passé en revue les diverses approches qui proposent des interprétations de la situation des chefs traditionnels en Afrique, cet article examine le cas des chefs dans la Zambie du centre-ouest. Il en fait l'historique à partir des années 1850, décrit la base de leur pouvoir et la marge de manouvre qui est la leur. De nos jours et dans cette situation locale spécifique, la base du pouvoir est en voie de déclin et les chefs s'efforcent de trouver de nouvelles stratégies pour se maintenir. Ils sont toujours davantage livrés aux mains de nouveaux acteurs sur la scène locale, contre lesquels ils se retrouvent plus ou moins sans défense. L'exemple traité ici, est celui d'une association ethnique volontaire, l'association culturelle Kazanga, fondée et contrôlée par certains de leurs sujets urbanisés qui ont réussi, et appartiennent à leur entourage immédiat. Cette organisation non gouvernementale s'est révélée capable d'établir un pont entre les politiques indigènes et l' État, selon un processus graduel d'ethnicisation. Cependant, la renaissance du statut de chef tourne court et conduit, non au maintien du pouvoir du chef, mais à une folklorisation qui le prive de tout impact, sinon à son annihilation pure et simple. Il en résulte que la tension monte entre les chefs et l'association ethnique en question. Show moreIl y a un demi-siècle, le chercheur sénégalais Cheikh Anta Diop posait la question de la négritude de l'Égypte et de l'antériorité des civilisations nègres. Aujourd'hui, c'est de l'Amérique du Nord que nous viennent les échos d'une telle contestation de l'histoire écrite par les Blancs. La réécriture du passé des Africains, vu à la lumière de l'Égypte pharaonique, suscite une relecture du passé européen. Les humanités gréco-latines se voient opposer des humanités négro-égyptiennes. Toute l'historiographie savante est donc soupçonnée d'un complot planétaire contre les peuples noirs, dont elle aurait dérobé l'héritage culturel pour mieux les asservir. Cette science dite eurocentriste est donc défiée par une histoire afrocentriste du monde. L'objet de cet ouvrage est de mieux connaître l'argumentation de ce courant, d'en discuter les sources et les méthodes, d'en comprendre les motivations et d'en analyser les réseaux. Show moreIn this chapter the author explores how the inhabitants of Lusaka, the capital of Zambia, have used their church organization to create a viable social texture for themselves, serving political, economic and kinship goals way beyond the letter of the gospel. In Zambia, towns only came into being during the colonial period. The author starts with a discussion of the relative importance of continuity and transformation in the urban social structure of rural patterns of social relations. He then presents a long monologue of just one urban protagonist, recorded during fieldwork in 1972-1973. Mrs. Evelyn Phiri lives in the township of Kapemperere in Lusaka, and is a member of a well-established church body, the Roman Catholic Church. Her monologue highlights the discussion of elements of continuity and transformation. The church appears as a local formal organization, as a structure of material and ideological/spiritual assistance, and finally as a structure of social control. It assumes functions which can only be understood against the background of preexisting rural traditional patterns, yet caters for needs of crisis support, conflict regulation and the expression of group identity and an emerging class structure. This provides a framework within which to identify urban social processes such as they manifest themselves in the social drama evocated in Mrs. Phiri's monologue. Notes, ref Show less

Show moreThis chapter presents an extended case study of the personal experiences of a young Kalanga woman in Francistown, Botswana, as she moves from village girlhood to incipient urban consumerism. After describing the urban setting of Francistown and the expansion of the town's residential space under the Self-Help Housing Agency (SSHA) project in the 1980s, the author relates the story of Mary's transition from village to urban life, with its vastly increased levels of commodity consumption. He describes her initial rural-orientated identity embodying the productive and reproductive tasks defined for women in a village setting, the conflictive character of her village-oriented ties in the domain of kinship and, to a lesser extent, organized Christian religion, her tentative adoption of a new, socially negotiable identity through new aspirations based on the selection of a different reference group (urban female workmates and co-tenants), her learning of the role of "modern, urban consumer", her definition of a career goal, and her budgetary strategies (rotating credit or 'motshelo', and hire purchase). The narrative is based on participant observation and interviews over a period of five years from 1988. Show less
