Show moreDifferentiated instruction concerns adapting education to students’ needs. However, relatively little is known about how students experience the degree to which their teachers fulfill their individual educational needs. In the current study, the Differentiated Instruction from Students’ Perspective (DISP) questionnaire was developed and administered among 458 students of grade 4 to 6 of 22 primary school teachers in the Netherlands. The internal consistency of the DISP instrument was considered good. Students in general were moderately positive about the level of differentiation they experienced and few differences between DISP-ratings of students with varying mathematics achievement levels were identified. It is concluded that the DISP questionnaire is a suitable instrument to study students’ perspectives and can be used by researchers as well as by teachers who would like to gain insights in and improve their differentiation practice. Show moreRecent years have seen a rise in awareness around “responsible metrics” and calls for research assessment reforms internationally. Yet within the field of quantitative science studies and in research policy contexts, concerns about the limitations of evaluative bibliometrics are almost as old as the tools themselves. Given that many of the concerns articulated in recent reform movements go back decades, why has momentum for change grown only in the past ten years? In this paper, we draw on analytical insights from the sociology of social movements on collective action frames to chart the emergence, development, and expansion of “responsible metrics” as a professional reform movement. Through reviewing important texts that have shaped reform efforts, we argue that hitherto, three framings have underpinned the responsible metrics reform agenda: the metrics scepticism framing, the professional-expert framing, and the reflexivity framing. We suggest that while these three framings have co-existed within the responsible metrics movement to date, the “truce” negotiated between these framings may not last indefinitely, especially as the responsible metrics movement extends into wider research assessment reform movements. Show moreSeveral initiatives have been taken to promote the open availability of bibliographic metadata of scholarly publications in Crossref. We present an up-to-date overview of the availability of six metadata elements in Crossref: reference lists, abstracts, ORCIDs, author affiliations, funding information, and license information. Our analysis shows that the availability of these metadata elements has improved over time, at least for journal articles, the most common publication type in Crossref. However, the analysis also shows that many publishers need to make additional efforts to realize full openness of bibliographic metadata. Show less

Show moreThis paper analyses how fundamental transformations of Moroccan society over the past century have shaped Morocco’s mobility complex and how migration has affected and accelerated these transformation processes in its own right. Economic transitions and the concomitant demise of subsistence-based agrarian livelihoods, urbanization processes and demographic transitions, increasing education and rapid cultural change have increased all forms of migratory and non-migratory mobility within and from Morocco, particularly through large-scale rural-to-urban migration as well as rapidly increasing emigration to Europe. While earlier patterns seem largely consistent with mobility transition theory, the predicted decrease in emigration levels has not occurred, as, since the 1990s, Morocco has entered a migration plateau of persistently high emigration despite significant increases in living standards, a slowing down of internal migration and increasing immigration. Continuously high levels of emigration can be explained by a growing disjuncture between sluggish and uneven economic development that has mainly benefitted certain regions and economic elites on the one hand, and fast sociocultural change across all social classes and regions on the other. This disjuncture has rapidly increased youth’s aspirations for lifestyles and freedoms that they find difficult to imagine in Morocco, but at the same time reshapes Morocco’s internal mobility patterns and attracts growing numbers of immigrants. Show moreOver centuries past, human societies have been through fundamental changes often defined as ‘modernisation’. Despite huge advances in knowledge, social science has struggled to conceptualise the nature of these changes and to integrate insights from across different disciplines into a single framework. Disciplinary fragmentation and methodological parochialism as well as a postmodern aversion to ‘grand theory’ have impeded theoretical synthesis. To overcome this impasse, we introduce social transformation as a meta-theoretical conceptual framework for studying ‘big change’. Defining social transformation as a fundamental change in the way that societies are organised and resources are distributed, we distinguish five interconnected dimensions – the political, the economic, the technological, the demographic and the cultural – which together constitute the ‘social realm’. Studied simultaneously, these dimensions are able to capture ‘big change’ in its universal aspects while keeping sight of the diversity of its concrete manifestations. We apply this framework to explore how the ‘modern transformation’ has reshaped societies and to show how the interplay of the various political, economic, technological, demographic and cultural transitions have transformed social life around the globe in strikingly similar ways – notwithstanding the varied, unique ways in which this ‘modern transformation’ has concretely manifested itself across societies and over different periods. Show moreAls er iets is dat organisaties uit balans heeft gebracht, dan is het wel de coronacrisis. Sommige veranderingen hopen we na de crisis zo snel mogelijk te beëindigen, andere blijken een verbetering. De verschillen voor organisaties, leidinggevenden en werknemers zijn bovendien enorm. De ene organisatie moest tijdens COVID-19 geheel sluiten, de andere kon nog openblijven in aangepaste vorm of zag zelfs de omzet toenemen. We zullen ons moeten blijven aanpassen. Coronamaatregelen veranderen nog steeds en het voor velen verplichte en voortdurende thuiswerken bevalt niet iedereen. Tegelijkertijd is de kans dat we helemaal teruggaan naar de situatie voor de coronacrisis klein. Vaker thuiswerken, digitaal samenwerken en meer je eigen tijd indelen blijven vermoedelijk ook in de toekomst een belangrijke rol spelen. Dit biedt kansen. Vrijwel niemand wil terug naar de 9-tot-5-kantoorbaan en ‘s ochtend en ’s avonds in de file staan. Juist in een crisissituatie is het makkelijker om verouderde en niet-werkende aanpakken los te laten en nieuwe, positieve ontwikkelingen versneld door te voeren. Grijp daarom juist deze periode aan voor positieve verandering. In deze paper vind je handvatten voor leidinggevenden gebaseerd op wetenschappelijke kennis en ervaringen uit de praktijk. We stippen vijf belangrijke thema’s aan waar leidinggevenden mee te maken hebben: Contact houden, Waarderen, Mensgericht leidinggeven, Gezond werken en Investeren in ontwikkeling. Binnen elk thema spelen tegengestelde belangen. Het is aan de leidinggevende om hierin een balans te vinden. Show less
