Or cette mise à distance passe notamment par un travail sur les impressions sensibles qui sont celles du je-narrateur, et qui expriment indirectement son expérience. Dans un premier temps, cet essai s’attache à analyser ces impressions sensibles – surtout visuelles mais également auditives et tactiles -. Elles révèlent un attachement au détail, au fragment du réel qui, au niveau de l’histoire, permet seul à l’héroïne de faire face à l’horreur ; or cette manière de centrer sur un détail – main qui se rétracte sous un coup de matraque, gros orteil sortant de la chaussette trouée d’un mort – ne joue pas seulement au niveau de l’histoire mais c’est également un procédé littéraire (celui de la synecdoque) producteur d’images capables d’exprimer indirectement l’horreur. Dans un deuxième temps, nous explorons un autre type d’impressions visuelles : celles qui sont produites par le rêve et l’hallucination, particulièrement fréquents dans le roman. Si les rêves fonctionnent de manière passablement conventionnelle, mettant à nu les désirs inconscients de l’héroïne, les hallucinations correspondent parfois à un passage à vide de l’héroïne, résultant en des images qui sont mieux à même de communiquer l’horreur que la simple narration des faits. Show moreThe main question that arises when one discusses the concept of well-being in philosophy is whose well-being is at stake. Is it primarily the well-being of the individual or that of the community? Does the pointer of the balance between the community and the individual move to liberalism and atomism or holism and communitarianism? This introductory book chapter focuses on the philosophical contributions of three well-known Ghanaian philosophers to the conceptualisation of human well-being to increase insights into the global ethics of development. These philosophers are the late Kwasi Wiredu (1931-2022), the late Kwame Gyekye (1939-2019), and Kwame Anthony Appiah (1954 -). The chapter will kick off with these Akan philosophers’ (implied) contributions to the so-called ‘classical communitarian debate’ which focuses on the pressing question of how to reach harmony between the interests of the community and the individual in modern Africa. Then, it will focus on how these philosophers developed an ethics that goes beyond the boundaries of their cultural group by borrowing from the field of Intercultural Philosophy. Finally, it will concentrate on the conceptualisation of human well-being in the context of Intercultural Philosophy as insights into ‘global ethics of development’ but not before introducing ‘ethics of global development’. Drawing from longstanding debates on communitarianism in the context of personhood in African philosophy, as well as those in intercultural philosophy, the diverse contributors present manifold ways to philosophize about well-being from African contexts. Hailing from sub-Saharan Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, they address questions of human well-being related to the major global challenges of our time, such as climate change and socio-economic, gender, and racial inequality in society, education, and organization. This collection, building on the work of African independence philosophers as well as oral traditions from a critical development studies perspective, offers fresh views on well-being, development, and morality, thus contributing to global ethics from an African vantage point. Show moreThe affinity between photography and memory is rather axiomatic: We take photos to preserve our memories. This formulation considers photographs as aide-mémoire and photography as a mnemotechnique. Such a basic analogy, however, falls short in explaining the spatiotemporality and materiality of photography and overlooks the mediated aspects of memory in narrating the past. The difficulty with describing the conjunction of memory and photography lies in the fact that neither of them has a static essence: Both remembering and photography are inherently dynamic processes. While for some the photograph simply is a representational image that embodies past events, for others the photograph’s materiality and social uses are equally crucial in the way it continually reshapes our memories. In addition, debates on “prosthetic memory,” “postmemory,” and trauma have already shown how photography plays a role in the disembodied, transgenerational, and retroactive operations of memory work. To classify diverse approaches toward memory and photography without ignoring the dynamic aspects of either of them, this entry is divided into two parts: “conceiving photography through memory” and “perceiving memory through photography.” While the first section explains how the medium of photography has been historically defined via its approaches to memory and remembrance, the second section shows how some salient views on memory are largely founded on photographic lexicons and metaphors. Among others, the first part draws on the work of thinkers such as Siegfried Kracauer, Roland Barthes, and Elizabeth Edwards, and the second part discusses the work of Sigmund Freud, Marianne Hirsch, and Ulrich Baer.
