Show moreThe history of South Sudan has been marked by persistent conflict, both before and after the country’s independence in 2011, which has exacerbated the already complex web of overlapping land claims and unclear land rights. Many South Sudanese people, especially women, lack land tenure security. This report, based on qualitative research implemented in the South Sudanese cities of Torit and Wau in 2021 and 2022, aims to investigate practical interventions for land justice and the dynamics of land justice in South Sudan. To do so, the report focuses on three main topics. First, it provides an overview of land administration in South Sudan. Second, it investigates land-dispute resolution mechanisms, with a particular focus on the Community Mediation Groups (CMGs) implemented by the South Sudan Law Society (SSLS). Finally, it discusses women’s land rights in South Sudan in customary and statutory systems, the paths available for women to claim their rights, and women’s voices and roles in positions of leadership. De vraag naar een adequate Nederlandse opstelling dient zich aan, ook voor de nieuw aan te treden regering. Het adviesrapport benadrukt de noodzaak van onverminderde Nederlandse en Europese steun aan Oekraïne en geeft aan dat Nederland zich proactiever moet voorbereiden op verschillende scenario’s voor de oorlog in Oekraïne en actief dient te streven naar de meest wenselijke uitkomsten, waaronder een overwinning voor Oekraïne of een sterke onderhandelingspositie voor het land.Het advies bespreekt daarna zes thema’s in meer detail: 1) de Europese veiligheidsarchitectuur; 2) de Europese defensie-industrie; 3) het perspectief op Oekraïens EU-lidmaatschap; 4) Oekraïne’s wederopbouw; 5) de gevolgen van de oorlog voor het mondiale Zuiden; en 6) weerbaarheid en draagvlak. However, experience has shown that the concept of indirect discrimination is often not understood and sometimes not even accepted or acknowledged. Moreover, its application in practice presents a number of challenges. This report, written by Christa Tobler, updates an earlier report on indirect discrimination written in 2008 by presenting developments and challenges in CJEU case law as well as national legislation and case law in the Member States. Show moreThis report presents the results of the Steering Research and Innovation for Global Goals (STRINGS) project – a major global study into the alignment between science, technology and innovation (STI) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It highlights a glaring mismatch between STI and the SDGs; warns that, if this mismatch is not addressed, it will undermine progress on the SDGs; and makes recommendations about how to tackle this imbalance. To help understand and better address the challenges of investing in STI for the SDGs, while embracing the complex relationship between STI and the SDGs, we make use of multiple analytical tools to examine STI-SDG relations for different types of actors, across geographical settings and time horizons. By combining methods from a range of disciplines, we provide complementary mappings, characterizations and understandings of the complex relations between STI and the SDGs. We are then able to build on these mappings and characterizations to illustrate and explain misalignments between STI activities and the SDGs. By combining these analyses, we gained deep insights into the way that particular STI priorities emerge both locally and globally, and how STI can be steered to improve alignment with the SDGs. Our results can help policymakers, research funders, academics, international organizations (INGOs) and aid organizations to make informed decisions about investing in research and innovation that will address the SDGs and ultimately create a positive impact on society. Nu de oorlog ruim een half jaar duurt, en voorlopig geen einde kent, is het verstandig dat Nederland nadenkt over een toekomststrategie. Op welke wijze kan Nederland de veiligheidspolitieke en sociaaleconomische belangen beschermen tegen de achtergrond van de oorlog en in het licht van de veranderende geopolitieke verhoudingen? Nederland heeft zich verbonden aan de oorlog in Oekraïne en is verwikkeld in een hybride conflict met Rusland. De oorlog veroorzaakt op vele fronten problemen voor de Nederlandse en Europese samenlevingen. De kwetsbare veiligheidssituatie dwingt het parlement en de regering na te denken over een toekomststrategie voor het buitenlandse beleid. De AIV doet een aantal urgente aanbevelingen. Show less
