Show moreThe relationship between the VOC (Dutch East India Company) and its servants fundamentally changed with its decline (1740-1796). The changing circumstances of the eighteenth century demanded too much of the VOC. The solution to these new demands was not sought in new capitalization from Europe, but in a combination of cutbacks on activities in Asia and augmented usage of servants’ fortunes. The domains the VOC retreated from were filled by privileges to the servants. As the VOC depended more on its servants during its decline, the balance of power between them shifted in favour of the servants. This change in balance demanded more of the servants, forcing them to organize themselves differently to meet the new challenges. In the end, this change of perspective makes the development much more comparable to the changes the English East India Company went through, and provides a new perspective on changes in the position of the EIC-servants in the period around Plassey (1757). Show morePsychologists have shown that reference-point reasoning is a ubiquitous cognitive phenomenon intrinsic to perception, categorisation, spatial orientation, social, organisational and marketing behaviour of human beings. Various cognitive tasks involve evoking a salient entity – called cognitive reference point – for establishing mental contact with less salient items. It is then reasonable to assume that language use also involves a lot of reference-point reasoning. However, linguistic aspects of this phenomenon have hardly been investigated. A welcome exception is Langacker’s reference-point model dealing with grammatical constructions and metonymy. This thesis elaborates the reference-point model by applying it to lexical semantics. The only reference point that has been quite intensely studied in lexical semantics is a prototype. By focusing on two adjectival groups (colour and size), the author demonstrates that a whole panoply of cognitive reference points are used to anchor conceptual specifications of lexical items, prototypes being only a special case of the reference-point mechanism. An important finding is that a word may trigger more than one reference point at a time. For example, dimensional adjectives may be interpreted vis-à-vis an average value, endpoints of the scale, prototypes and dimensions of the human body. Contextual variability is claimed to be related to various combinations of reference points, their relative salience and patterns of interaction. Show less

Show moreThis book analyzes a defined corpus of philosophic texts from the Warring States period. It treats texts as objects in their own right and, in a broad sense, discusses the relationship between material conditions of text and manuscript culture, writing, techniques of meaning-construction, and philosophy in Warring States period (ca. 481-222). By analyzing the formal structure of the philosophic texts from the Warring States, the present study distinguishes between two ideal types of texts, which I call “argument-based texts” and “authority-based texts”. Meaning-construction in the former type of texts is based in writing; in the latter ideal type of texts, meaning-construction requires reference to (oral) commentators. Hence, whereas argument-based texts facilitate philosophy that is exempt from needs of contextualization, authority-based texts, for their part, are mere modules of larger philosophic processes that remain outside the texts themselves. Show moreDeze dissertatie biedt een volledig bijgewerkte en gemodernisserde etymologische beschrijving van 530 Armeense lexemen, waarvan Indo-Europese oorsprong zeker of waarschijnlijk is. Armeens is vanuit Indo-Europees standpunt al meer dan 100 jaar bestudeerd. Er bestaan veel waardevolle handboeken, detailstudies en overzichten van de vergelijkende studie van het Armeens. De meeste daarvan concentreren zich op het Klassiek Armeens (ca. 500 na Chr.) en gebruiken slechts zelden moderne dialectale en etnografische gegevens. Niet-literaire gegevens vanuit de Armeense dialecten zijn voor het grootste deel buiten het blikveld van het Indo-Europese etymologische onderzoek gebleven. Een uitzondering vormen de fundamentele studies van Ačaryan (HAB) en Jahukyan (1972 en 1987). Dit boek integreert de lexicale, fonetische en morfologische gegevens van de Armeense dialecten en van etnografische beschrijvingen op een systematische wijze in de etymologische benadering van het Indo-Europese lexicon binnen het Armeens. Deze benadering is nieuw. In deze dissertatie wordt gebruik gemaakt van het materiaal dat is verzameld in Ačaryan's etymologische woordenboek en in de bestaande beschrijvingen van de individuele dialecten. Ook wordt een grote hoeveelheid materiaal verwerkt dat is geëxcerpeerd uit folkloreteksten en antropologische beschrijvingen, die meestal onbekend of onbereikbaar zijn voor geleerden buiten Armenië. Dit werk bestaat uit twee hoofdgedeelten: een etymologische bestudering van Armeense woorden die van zekere of waarschijnlijke Indo-Europese oorsprong zijn, en een eerste poging om te komen tot een zekere systematisering van taalkundige en culturele elementen die men kan afleiden uit de etymologische behandeling. In het eerste deel worden de geselecteerde lexemen op een systematische manier gepresenteerd en bestudeerd. In een filologische sectie worden de semantiek en de literaire referenties van een woord met zijn afleidingen behandeld met inbegrip van de morfologische kenmerken. Voor ieder lemma volgt dan een overzicht van de dialectale distributie en een discussie van de linguistische, dialectgeografische en etnografische aspecten die van belang zijn voor een etymologische beoordeling van het literaire materiaal. Daarop volgt een volledige etymologische discussie met insluiting van andere relevante Indo-Europese talen. Het tweede deel biedt een evaluatie van enkele resultaten van de etymologische studie in deel 1. Het vormt tevens een vooruitblik op diepgaander soortgelijk onderzoek.
