Show moreTo promote cross-community dialogue on matters of significance within the field of learning analytics (LA), we as editors-in-chief of the Journal of Learning Analytics (JLA) have introduced a section for papers that are open to peer commentary. An invitation to submit proposals for commentaries on the paper was released, and 12 of these proposals were accepted. The 26 authors of the accepted commentaries are based in Europe, North America, and Australia. They range in experience from PhD students and early-career researchers to some of the longest-standing, most senior members of the learning analytics community. This paper brings those commentaries together, and we recommend reading it as a companion piece to the original paper by Motz et al. (2023), which also appears in this issue. Show less

Show moreHet doel van de dissertatie was om meer inzicht te krijgen in de werkzame principes van blended learning zoals deze op dit moment veelal wordt toepast binnen het hoger onderwijs. Meer inzicht in de huidige werkzame principes kan als startpunt dienen voor toekomstige ontwikkeling van blended learning modellen. Dataverzameling vond plaats bij twee propedeusevakken (n= 912) bij de opleidingen Rechtsgeleerdheid en Psychologie. Bij de analyse stond het ontdekken van gebruikerstypen centraal en tevens een exploratie naar de oorzaken van deze verschillende gebruikerspatronen van blended learning. Er komen vier verschillende gebruikerstypen naar voren, elk met wisselende impact op het studiesucces. Hoewel regulatie van het leren geen determinant blijkt te zijn voor de gevonden verschillen, blijkt de manier waarop het leren gereguleerd wordt, sterk samen te hangen met de gevolgen van het daadwerkelijke gebruik van de leermaterialen op het eindcijfer. Show moreUnderstanding why and how students interact with educational videos is essential to further improve the quality of MOOCs. In this paper, we look at the complexity of videos to explain two related aspects of student behavior: the dwelling time (how much time students spend watching a video) and the dwelling rate (how much of the video they actually see). Building on a strong tradition of psycholinguistics, we formalize a definition for information complexity in videos. Furthermore, building on recent advancements in time-on-task measures we formalize dwelling time and dwelling rate based on click-stream trace data. The resulting computational model of video complexity explains 22.44% of the variance in the dwelling rate for students that finish watching a paragraph of a video. Video complexity and student dwelling show a polynomial relationship, where both low and high complexity increases dwelling. These results indicate why students spend more time watching (and possibly contemplating about) a video. Furthermore, they show that even fairly straightforward proxies of student behavior such as dwelling can already have multiple interpretations; illustrating the challenge of sense-making from learning analytics.
