Show moreWe aimed to validate cross-culturally the Turkish, Moroccan Arabic and Moroccan Berber versions of the 48-item Symptom Questionnaire (SQ-48). Its psychometric properties were assessed in four samples: patients (n = 150) and controls (n = 103) with Turkish or Moroccan origins (n = 103) and patients (n = 189) and controls (n = 463) with native Dutch origins. Internal consistency and discriminatory power of SQ-48 subscales across groups were adequate to high. However, immigrant groups scored on average higher than Dutch native groups, but there was full configural, metric and partial scalar invariance in the immigrant groups. Although the SQ-48 is a valid measure of psychopathology in immigrant groups of Turkish and Moroccan origins, their cut-off values should likely be higher compared to natives. Show less

Show moreEr is nog relatief weinig bekend over de opvoeding en de ontwikkeling van gedragsproblemen bij jonge kinderen in tweede-generatie Turkse gezinnen in Nederland. In deze studie werden ruim 150 tweede-generatie Turkse moeders met jonge kinderen thuis bezocht en werden zij gefilmd tijdens verschillende spelletjes en taakjes om het opvoedgedrag van moeders te observeren. Ook hebben ouders verschillende vragenlijsten ingevuld. Dezelfde informatie was beschikbaar voor een groep Nederlandse gezinnen met peuters. Tweede-generatie Nederlands-Turkse moeders bleken meer stress te hebben en minder steun van de partner te ervaren, minder sensitief te zijn ten opzichte van hun kinderen en minder vaak op een positieve manier grenzen te stellen dan Nederlandse moeders. Turkse peuters laten echter niet meer probleemgedrag zien dan Nederlandse peuters in gezinnen met een vergelijkbaar opleidingsniveau en evenveel kinder en. Ondanks groepsverschillen is de onderlinge samenhang tussen de opvoedingsgedragingen van moeders en de ontwikkeling van probleemgedrag bij peuters vergelijkbaar in beide groepen. Ten slotte is gebleken dat het behoud van de Turkse cultuur een positieve invloed heeft op het welbevinden van Turkse moeders. Op basis van deze resultaten wordt onder Nederlands-Turkse gezinnen de effectiviteit van een cultuur-gevoelige opvoedingsondersteuning onderzocht die gericht is op het bevorderen van ouderlijke sensitiviteit en positief grenzen stellen. Show moreThis work is a close look at the life histories of the top Turkish political leaders with the aim of analyzing changes in gender role and gender identity and tensions between the two in the history of Turkish modernization vis-à-vis with contemporaneous debates on gender. The main objective is to situate modernization in its theoretical as well as historical context through subjective and private meanings as related to modern coming out of the narratives of the wives. It was argued that Kemalist modernization though created a modern outlook for women framed and sometimes limited their experiences of modernization. As the wives experienced it, the tension reflected itself in the relationship between the gender role performance and the gender identity construction. Additionally, it was argued that, under the attacks of different ideological political currents, Kemalist gender regime has become highly marginalized and except its symbolic power lost much of its power to provide women with a gender identity.
