Show moreDit artikel betoogt dat de term sektarisme een vertekenend beeld oplevert van de situatie in het Midden-Oosten. Deze conclusie wordt bereikt aan de hand van drie discussies. De eerste discussie is een hermeneutische analyse van het concept sektarisme, waaruit blijkt dat de term in haar huidige gebruik onvoldoende theoretische gronding heeft en uitgaat van vooronderstellingen. De tweede discussie is van praktische aard en gaat in op de veelvoorkomende aanname dat islam een belangrijke bron zou zijn van sektarische conflicten. Aan de hand van een historisch-comparatieve analyse zal blijken dat deze aanname niet juist is. Weliswaar speelt religie een belangrijke rol in de diverse spanningen en conflicten in het Midden-Oosten, maar – zo zal blijken uit de derde discussie – dat zegt meer over de sociaal-politieke dynamiek van deze tijd dan over de aard van religie zelf, en die van islam in het bijzonder. De ontwikkeling ervan heeft de afgelopen dertig jaar niet stilgestaan en geeft aanleiding tot nieuwe inzichten. Toch worden in de discussie al jarenlang dezelfde argumenten gebruikt.Hoe geven de verschillende islamitische basisscholen vandaag de dag vorm aan hun identiteit? En hoe wegen zij de verschillende maatschappelijkedebatten over de islam daarin af?Dit boek laat – met een focus op de identiteitsvorming - de leerkrachten en directieleden zelf aan het woord en probeert de verschillen in waarden, normen en gewoonten van binnenuit te duiden.Islamitische basisscholen blijken steeds meer aandacht te hebben voor de maatschappelijke context. Show moreMy research is based on transculturalism in the works of Iranian authors living in France since the 1980’s. Referring to the cultural interbreeding, transculturalism constitutes a field of research, which is becoming increasingly important in numerous countries. In literature this concept concerns hybrid works, i.e. works emanating from two or more different cultures. In French-Persian creations it shows the mixture between a Western tradition of novel and the dominating place of lyricism and poetry in the Eastern writing. It may open also to an interesting course of reflection in the cultural and social domain of multiculturalism and transculturalism more in general. It aims at current issues seen from a double perspective: the interdependency of the different cultures and a new type of literature from the perspective of writing. Those creations are intermediary between the artist in exile and the receiving society. They transmit values of interculturalism, permitting interaction between cultures. But also represent transculturalism, which transcends the simple ‘dialogue’ between two cultures to reach an original synthesis. My goal was to search hybrid factors in these works and to see how they are carried out concretely in the texts. Then we see who these works might be qualified as transcultural. Show less

Show moreIn public debate and academic discussions about Islam in Western society, reference is often made to the role of the imam in processes of acculturation of Muslims. Throughout these debates, we come across the important question of how imams transmit Islamic norms and values to Muslims living in secular, non-Islamic societies. This descriptive-exploratory research considers this question specifically looking at the role of the imam in the local mosque in the Netherlands. This dissertation describes and analyses the external perspective of the views circulating in the public debate on imams between 1993 and 2004. The internal perspective has been brought into focus empirically by describing and exploring his role, authority and influence in two mosque-communities and one Islamic student association. The internal perspective further divides into the perspective of the imam and the perspective of a group practising, mostly young and highly educated Muslims who grew up in the Netherlands. The imam finds himself in a field of tension between expectations from the majority society and expectations of the believers. The indicative findings from the internal perspective have been compared with the external views. The outcome of this comparison is used to clarify the ongoing public __imam-debate__. Show less

Show moreMali ist eines der ärmsten Länder der Erde und zugleich einer der größten Empfänger von Auslandshilfe. Natürlich wäre es naiv anzunehmen, daß die erheblichen Summen unabhängig von geopolitischen und strategischen Interessen der Geberländer fließen. In der Tat tendieren die politischen Kreise sowohl in den USA als auch in der EU dazu, Mali aufgrund seiner langen Grenzen zu Mauretanien und Algerien als potenzielle Barriere gegen das Vordringen eines radikalen Islam nach Westafrika zu erachten. Seit dem Ende des Kalten Krieges und dem Zerfall der Sowjetunion, zu der Mali wichtige Beziehungen hatte, wurde das Land von europäischen und amerikanischen Geberinstitutionen als Modell für den Übergang zur Demokratie und für die Umsetzung einer liberalen Wirtschaftspolitik gepriesen. Seit dem 11. September 2001 allerdings, seit es heißt, überall auf der Welt nach Hinweisen auf islamischen ,Fundamentalismus", Islamismus bzw. politischen Islam zu suchen, ist auch Mali ins Visier geraten. Show moreIn this paper, the author considers the interpretation of and the ethnographic production about Islam and Muslim societies, particularly in Africa. The Orientalist 'doctrine' of an unchanging and timeless Islam has long been shown to be inadequate for understanding the obvious diversity and complexity within and between Muslim societies. However, the limitations of certain anthropolocial studies - notably, their almost exclusive focus on local context and cultures to which they sometimes attribute different 'Islams' (e.g. African Islam) - have not been critically examined to the same degree. The author argues that one must study Islam as a discursive tradition at the intersection of the local and the supralocal, including broader scriptural traditions of Islam. Drawing on ethnographic and historical research on Islamic law in West Africa, the author shows how Muslims in Mali participate in the supralocal discourses of Islam and some of the ways in which local and regional history and culture shape their participation in these discourses.
