Show moreIn this book, the central question is what the causes and consequences of intra-party preference voting are. Four different aspects of intra-party preference voting are studied: the effects of specific electoral rules on preference voting; the voters who cast a preference vote; the candidates who receive them; and the consequences of those preference votes. Three main conclusions are drawn: that in the absence of a the option to cast a party vote a vote for another candidate is not necessarily a true candidate vote; that ideology does not play a role when it comes to the intra-party competition; and that preference votes have limited consequences for the career and behaviour of politicians.
