Show morePurpose The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic severely disrupted society and the health care system. In addition to epidemiological changes, little is known about the pandemic's effects on the trauma care chain. Therefore, in addition to epidemiology and aetiology, this study aims to describe the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on prehospital times, resource use and outcome. Methods A multicentre observational cohort study based on the Dutch Nationwide Trauma Registry was performed. Characteristics, resource usage, and outcomes of trauma patients treated at all trauma-receiving hospitals during the first (W1, March 12 through May 11) and second waves (W2, May 12 through September 23), as well as the interbellum period in between (INT, September 23 through December 31), were compared with those treated from the same periods in 2018 and 2019. Results The trauma caseload was reduced by 20% during the W1 period and 11% during the W2 period. The median length of stay was significantly shortened for hip fracture and major trauma patients (ISS >= 16). A 33% and 66% increase in the prevalence of minor self-harm-related injuries was recorded during the W1 and W2 periods, respectively, and a 36% increase in violence-related injuries was recorded during the INT. Mortality was significantly higher in the W1 (2.9% vs. 2.2%) and W2 (3.2% vs. 2.7%) periods. Conclusion The imposed restrictions in response to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic led to diminished numbers of acute trauma admissions in the Netherlands. The long-lasting pressing demand for resources, including ICU services, has negatively affected trauma care. Further caution is warranted regarding the increased incidence of injuries related to violence and self-harm. Show less

It analyzes the experiences of four cases located in the Middle East and North Africa region, namely L’Atelier de l’Observatoire (Morocco), Clown Me In (Lebanon), Bantmag (Turkey), and Volunteer Palestine (West Bank). Although the Prince Claus Fund, Hivos, and European Cultural Foundation (ECF) have sought alternatives to the neoliberal instrumentalization of their funding measured according to the rubrics of impact, our research shows that organizations still struggle with the need to appeal to international funding bodies while also focusing on their work as embedded in local conditions. Show moreA brief historic overview and analysis is presented of the almost 9000 scientific articles that have appeared in the Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry (JIB) and its predecessor (Bioinorganic Chemistry), since 1973. This overview has a focus on the different topics, in particular on the different elements of the Periodic Table and on papers that have received very large numbers of citations. Over the whole period, copper has been the element occurring in most publications (almost 1800, which is 20%), followed by iron which occurs in some 12% of all papers. Other favorite elements are zinc, platinum and ruthenium. The worldwide origin of papers published in JIB has been analyzed as well, showing a quite evenly worldwide distribution, with just a few exceptions. Trends in selected scientific topics over time (first 10 years; last 25 years, last 10 years) are also discussed. Also authors and institutes with the largest number of papers published in JIB have been detected. The numerical information is based on an analysis of the Web of Science with a cutoff date around July 1, 2020. Show less

Show moreMyasthenia Gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting the neuromuscular junction. Although a hallmark of MG is muscle fatigability due to dysfunction of the neuromuscular junction (peripheral fatigue), a large number of MG patients also report symptoms of central fatigue, defined as an experienced lack of energy, physically and/or mentally. We systematically reviewed the literature on all aspects of central fatigue in MG. Results were categorized in 5 domains: prevalence, diagnosis, pathophysiology, treatment or impact. The prevalence of patient-reported fatigue varies between 42 and 82%, which is significantly higher than in control subjects. Fatigue severity is usually assessed with standardized questionnaires, but the choice of questionnaire varies widely between studies. The pathophysiology of fatigue is unknown, but it is strongly associated with depressive symptoms, female gender and disease severity. Fatigue is also highly prevalent in ocular MG and patients in remission, suggesting a multifactorial origin. Fatigued MG patients have a lower quality of life. Pharmacological treatment of MG is associated with improvement of fatigue and promising results have been found with physical and psychological training programs. Fatigue is a highly prevalent symptom of MG with a severe negative impact on quality of life. Physicians treating patients with MG should be aware of this symptom, as it may be treatable with physical or psychological training programs. (c) 2020 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. Show moreThe video game market is a big part of the current popular media landscape and is growing rapidly. Developers of video games are keen to make use of a variety of historical pasts as this provides them with recognisable themes,settings or narrative frameworks. Video games can be seen as the manifestation of experiential learning theory: they provide a unique informal learningenvironment in which their interactive nature allows for an immersive experience with which a deeper level of personal and historical learning can potentially be reached than in more formal settings. However, pasts incorporated in video games are mostly utilised to provide a fun experience in order to generate revenue. As more and more people depend on video games to teach them about the past, they often take the history presented in them for granted, relying on developers to tell an accurate story. Unmediated, players are prone to miss opportunities for critical engagement with the presented past, and can fall into the trap of presentism.It is important for those teaching about the past to understand how video games work, and what their potential and impact are. Data-driven approaches allow us to explore what types of games are considered to be ‘historical’. Our research shows that 206 million copies of games have been sold through Steam that were tagged as historical, and can be classified as strategy/top-down games, action-adventure narrative-driven games, or first-person action games. These types all have a reliance on some form of violence as central game mechanic, which needs to be taken into account when using video games as an education platform.Through four case studies, we show that video games can function as a platform to teach about the past in a critical, yet fun way. Firstly, Twine can be used to stimulate critical and multi-linear thinking as it allows the user to create a narrative based on a branching structure instead of a linear one. Secondly, video games can be incorporated into formal classroom settings in order to illustrate certain complex theoretical concepts. Streaming, or creating videos about games that incorporate the past, can be a major avenue for content-focused teaching, as well as a way to reflect on video game pasts – the third case study. Lastly, our RoMeincraft case study shows that participants are not only taught something about Roman heritage but also able to increase their skills in communication and digital media. Show moreTwenty years after the coming into force of the Rome Statute, not much has been written on its impact on the country level, neither is there consensus on the goals of the ICC. This thesis seeks to put forward a framework for assessing the impact of the Rome Statute, by measuring four types of impact: systemic effect on domestic legal systems; transformative effect on peace processes (such as through including the rights of victims); reparative effect for victims; and a demonstration effect on affected populations. The thesis measures these effects mainly in four countries: Afghanistan, Colombia, Libya and Uganda. Sources include (legal) literature, policy papers, news stories and interviews. The thesis concludes that while there is some normative impact of the Rome Statute and the ICC, in the form of systemic and transformative effect, it is undermined by lack of societal impact, mainly due to negative perceptions among affected population (demonstration effect) and lack of impact on victims (reparative effect). The thesis also makes a preliminary conclusion that the impact of the Court may have been the most in the country where it was needed the least (Colombia, which has a fairly robust legal system). Show moreResearch which explores unchartered waters has a high potential for major impact but also carries a higher uncertainty of having impact. Such explorative research is often described as taking a novel approach. This study examines the complex relationship between pursuing a novel approach and impact. Viewing scientific research as a combinatorial process, we measure novelty in science by examining whether a published paper makes first-time-ever combinations of referenced journals, taking into account the difficulty of making such combinations. We apply this newly developed measure of novelty to all Web of Science research articles published in 2001 across all scientific disciplines. We find that highly novel papers, defined to be those that make more (distant) new combinations, deliver high gains to science: they are more likely to be a top 1% highly cited paper in the long run, to inspire follow-on highly cited research, and to be cited in a broader set of disciplines and in disciplines that are more distant from their “home” field. At the same time, novel research is also more risky, reflected by a higher variance in its citation performance. We also find strong evidence of delayed recognition of novel papers as novel papers are less likely to be top cited when using short time-windows. In addition, we find that novel research is significantly more highly cited in “foreign” fields but not in their “home” field. Finally, novel papers are published in journals with a lower Impact Factor, compared with non-novel papers, ceteris paribus. These findings suggest that science policy, in particular funding decisions which rely on bibliometric indicators based on short-term citation counts and Journal Impact Factors, may be biased against “high risk/high gain” novel research. The findings also caution against a mono-disciplinary approach in peer review to assess the true value of novel research. Show less
