Show moreBoth prosociality in group context and morality are important aspects of social life and living together with others in society. In both situations, understanding the cognitive processes underlying the decisions is argued to be a crucial step in designing evidence-based interventions addressing not only choice outcomes, but the driving forces of the choices as well. Using fine-grained and unobtrusive measure of cognitive processes in the decision process, eye tracking is applied in the investigation of cognitive processes in this dissertation. Chapter 2 investigated active ignorance to others’ group membership. Chapter 3 presented two eye tracking studies, in which the cognitive processes of prosociality in intergroup contexts were investigated. Chapter 4 reported a study investigating the cognitive processes underlying moral decisions, speaking to the theoretical debate in moral decision making, advocating a choice discriminability perspective over the dual process theory of moral judgment. The work demonstrates the merit of further illuminating the inner workings of the “black box” of decision making, by using process-tracking techniques to gain insights about decision processes that would have been difficult to achieve when only using choices. Show moreMorality is of particular importance to people: People want to be considered moral and want to belong to moral groups. Consequently, morality judgments have the potential to motivate individuals to behave in ways that are considered to be ‘good’. In the current dissertation, I examined the impact of intragroup morality judgments on group members’ motivational responses, and compared those to competence judgments as an alternative domain of evaluation. In three empirical chapters, I investigated the impact of morality (vs. competence) judgments from different perspectives, namely judgments of 1) group member’s own prior behavior, 2) another group member’s behavior, as well as 3) the behavior of a prospective group member. The central hypothesis was that intragroup morality judgments generally impact more strongly on group members’ motivational responses than competence judgments. The results demonstrated that the motivational force of morality largely pertains to immorality. Judgments of immorality elicit a range of motivational responses in group members, such as negative affect, lowered perceived coping abilities, a cardiovascular pattern indicative of threat rather than challenge, and a greater inclination towards social exclusion. In conclusion, morality judgments—generally more so than competence judgments—impact on group members’ striving to be a ‘good’ group member. Show less

Show moreThe thesis examines the influence of group processes on the regulatory focus of individual group members. It is demonstrated that the group situation can affect group members' regulatory focus both in a top-down fashion (via the identitiy of the group) and in a bottom-up fashion (emerging from the group process). Furthermore, the influence of teams diverse in regulatory focus is examined, both in empirical and real-life teams(i.e. hockey teams). As a general result it was found that regulatory focus diversity can contribute positively to the performance of the team. All results are discussed in terms of their theoretical and practical implications. Show less
