Show moreThe departure of most Greeks from Egypt at the beginning of the 1960s raised questions in the community about how it should readjust its presence at an institutional level. This article examines how the Greek Koinotēta of Alexandria (GKA) operated as both a local and diasporic institution in periods of contraction, in terms of size and finances, and analyzes the adjustment policies it undertook concerning its institutional property and real estate. Despite the community’s demographic shrinkage in the 1960s and 1970s, the GKA was assigned its role as the value keeper and moral guide for the children of the community through its educational institutions and orphanages, having the support of the Greek representatives, in this case the consular authorities.Even though the GKA faced serious financial difficulties in the 1960s, it strived to find strategies of adaptation to maintain its agency and social, political and economic capital. Show less

Show moreThe aim of this chapter is to contribute to the debate on deconstructing the gender binary, toexplore notions of experiencing shame and violence, and also to identify key points of self-concept ingenderqueer people, by running a survey in three different countries: Greece, the UK and the Netherlands. The survey is the first to explore the impact of this gender- binary discourse and the experience of shameand violence within this frame, within the genderaqueer community in a comparative perspective. Thechapter contributes to the debate on perceptions of masculinity and femininity in association with shameand violence, while reconnoitring the role of culture as a driver of these perceptions and how that role leadsto the re-evaluation of the self along with the sense and impact of shame as a relational process with the self and the society. The survey approaches shame and violence, not only in terms of how they are perceived by the genderqueer community, but also of how they are expressed, e.g. in a passive way (directed violence against a person) or active way (person as actor engaging in violent behaviour) in everyday life. The application of different perspectives on confronting the binary, power and shame provides a critical take on the gender-based debate and on the crux of self-concept and identifies breaks with existing thinking and practice that are essential to any reform of gender recognition policy. Show moreObjectives: The epidemiology of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) has undergone many changes since the beginning of this century and continues to evolve based on recent studies. Here, we performed a molecular analysis of C. difficile isolates in northern Greece across 10 health-care facilities, spanning from 2016 to 2019. Methods: 221 C. difficile isolates were cultured from stool samples of hospitalized patients with diarrhea and screened by PCR for the presence of the toxin A (tcdA), toxin B (tcdB), the binary toxin (cdtA and cdtB) genes and the regulating gene of tcdC. PCR ribotyping of the cultured isolates was performed by a standardized protocol for capillary gel-based PCR ribotyping and an international database with well documented reference strains. Results: Thirty-five different PCR ribotypes were identified. The most common RTs identified were: 181 (36%, 80/221), 017 (10%, 21/221), 126 (9%, 19/221), 078 (4%, 9/221) and 012 (4%, 8/221). Notably, the predominant RT181, with toxin profile tcdA thorn tcdB thorn cdtA thorn cdtB thorn , was identified in seven out of ten participating hospitals. Conclusions: Multiple C. difficile ribotypes have been circulating in the northern Greece region with RTs 181 (closely related to 027), 017, 126 and 078 being predominant. (C) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Show moreChronic respiratory disease (CRD) is a silent, ongoing pandemic. It disproportionally affects low-resource settings. Tobacco smoke and kitchen smoke (caused by the use of solid fuels and inefficient stoves) are major risk factors. Evidence-based solutions to CRD often fail to be effective, as they misalign with local needs and then fail to be implemented. This thesis focused on how lung health solutions can be implemented successfully by capitalising on the local needs.Within the Horizon2020 FRESH AIR implementation research project, we first studied local settings in Kyrgyzstan, Uganda, Greece, and Vietnam. For example, we found that COPD in the highlands of Kyrgyzstan occurred three times more frequently than in the lowlands, partly due to higher levels of kitchen smoke. We discovered the high indirect burden of asthma and COPD, by their impact on work- and daily activities. We also found that many communities and their health workers mistook CRD for infectious disease like tuberculosis. Based on these findings and on implementation literature, we then designed several practical tools addressing critical factors for implementation success of lung health interventions. These evidence-based tools can facilitate implementation success, thereby optimising the use of already scarce resources and benefitting health outcomes. Show less

Show moreBreathing polluted air is a risk to respiratory conditions. During the Greek financial crisis, the use of household fireplaces/wood stoves shifted from mostly decorative to actual domestic heating, resulting in increased indoor smoke production. We aimed to evaluate household air pollution (HAP), fuel use and respiratory symptoms in rural Crete, Greece. PM2.5 and CO were measured in 32 purposively selected rural households (cross-sectional study) at periods reflecting lesser (baseline) versus extensive (follow-up) heating. Clinical outcomes were assessed using questionnaires. Mean PM2.5 were not significantly different between measurements (36.34 mu g/m(3) vs. 54.38 mu g/m(3), p = 0.60) but exceeded the WHO air quality guidelines. Mean and maximal CO levels were below the WHO cut-offs (0.56 ppm vs. 0.34 ppm, p = 0.414 and 26.1 ppm vs. 9.72 ppm, p = 0.007, respectively). In total, 90.6% of households were using wood stoves or fireplaces for heating, but half also owned clean fuel devices. The differences between devices that were owned versus those that were used were attributed to financial reasons. In both cases, the most frequent respiratory symptoms were phlegm (27.3% vs. 15.2%; p = 0.34) and cough (24.2% vs. 12.1%; p = 0.22). Our findings demonstrate the magnitude of HAP and confirm the return to harmful practices during Greece's austerity. Upon validation, these results can support strategies for fighting fuel poverty, empowering communities and strengthening local health systems. Show less

Show moreThis thesis deals with political publishing during the Greek long sixties, 1963-1981. In particular it provides a historical narrative of Greek left-wing publishing in the broad sense (including communist, leftist, anarchist, countercultural and alternative media) during this period. The major argument of this thesis is that Greek political publishing during the time under investigation constituted a distinctive publishing field, in terms of John B. Thompson’s treatise of the publishing field theory, which is in turn based on Pierre Bourdieu’s field theory. I argue that the political publishing field differs distinctively from the trade-publishing field in terms of the significance of the five sources of capital (economic, social, human, intellectual, symbolic) defined by Thompson. While all five are present in the political publishing field, economic capital, which is vital in trade publishing, is of less significance, while symbolic capital is of the utmost importance. It is possible for characteristics to be shared across time and space, but generalising without investigating can easily lead to wrong conclusions since fields evolve in time and are also affected by the specific social, political, economic, and technological conditions of each country. Thus we need to investigate each field in a specific time and space frame and by drawing upon the publishing field theory specify its particular characteristics. Show less

Show moreThe article discusses the first case law issued on the EU-Turkey deal that authoritatively answers the question whether Turkey constitutes a safe third country for refugees. In 390 out of 393 decisions, Greek Asylum Appeals Committees ruled that the safe third country requirements are not fulfilled with respect to Turkey, essentially impeding the application of the EU-Turkey deal. The purpose of this article is, on the first level, through empirical research, to shed light on the reasoning of the decisions of the Appeals Committees and investigate the impact of the EU-Turkey agreement upon them. On a second level, it focuses on evaluating from the perspective of effective legal protection the legislative amendment, subsequent to these decisions, which modifies their composition. The analysis is of significant societal relevance, as it aspires to inform further law, policy, and jurisprudence in the field, especially since it provides access to sources that due to language and other practical barriers would remain far from the reach of legal and policy experts.
