Show moreAlthough intercountry adoption, according to systematic reviews as well as meta- analysis, is a successful intervention from a perspective of child protection, often a long road of therapy and support is needed. Intercountry adoptees are overrepresented in mental health services worldwide, as they are in the Netherlands. The single focus on classifying the problems and using mainly CBT or videobased treatments, are not enough to help these children and their families. In this practice based article I propose to use Waters’ Star model (2016) for both assessment and treatment of mental health problems. In doing so, not only overt but also covert issues are addressed, e.g. dissociation. The latter is a common coping mechanism in intercountry adoptees but not often referred to in assessment or treatment. A tailor made treatment plan, involving the parents as co-therapists employing attachment based, developmental, trauma- and neurobiologically informed interventions will be discussed. Show moreThe research presented in this thesis makes use of small molecules (as H2 , D2 and O2 ) on well-defined single crystal surfaces (flat Pt(111), flat Cu(211) and curved Pt(111)) to elucidate the role of surface structure and degrees of freedom in the reactant in specific surface reactions. For D2 on Pt(111), we find at most a very weak signature of geometric corrugation at large polar angles. For D2 on Cu, we find an anomalous reduced dissociative sticking probability for the stepped Cu(211) surface compared to Cu(111). For hydrogen on curved Pt(111), the HD formation increases linearly with the step density at low incident energy. A surface reconstruction on curved Pt(111) surface is observed on both A- and B-step side when the crystal is annealed at 1200 K. For O2 on curved Pt(111), at low incident energy, steps dominate reactivity by providing an indirect dynamical trapping mechanism. At higher impact energy, a direct chemisorption mechanism dominates. The step facet favors molecules impacting with their internuclear axis parallel to its surface. Show less

Show moreDissociation, emotion dysregulation, and cognitive disturbances are key features of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). The aim of this thesis was to investigate associations between dissociation and activity in networks relevant to affective-cognitive processing in patients with BPD compared to healthy controls. In the first part of this thesis, associations between self-reported dissociation and functional connectivity of the amygdala and anterior cingulate during resting-state and during an Emotional Working Memory Task (EWMT) were examined. The second part of this neuroimaging research combined script-driven imagery with the EWMT and with an Emotional Stroop Task. Findings suggest a detrimental effect of dissociation on cognitive functioning in BPD. After dissociation induction, patients showed reduced activity in the amygdala, posterior cingulate, superior temporal gyrus, and occipital areas (cuneus, fusiform gyrus, lingual gyrus), along with increased activity in frontal areas (inferior frontal gyrus, dlPFC). Altered interactions between the amygdala and the afore-mentioned regions may underlie disturbed information processing during dissociation in BPD. Further research with larger sample sizes and clinical control groups is needed to gain more insight into the neural mechanisms of stress-related dissociation in BPD. A combination of neuroimaging techniques with subjective, behavioral, and psychophysiological measurements may be a helpful step into this direction. Show less

Show moreToday, the energy sector is highly dependent on heterogeneous catalysis because a future solution to end our dependency on natural sources lies in generating hydrogen by splitting water. Several transition metals, such as Pt, are known to be good catalyst materials for water splitting reactions. They play a key role in understanding the fundamental aspects of the elementary interactions occurring on the surfaces of catalysts. These surfaces, however, are generally very complex and contain a wide distribution of structurally and chemically different sites with different activities. One of the key issues in optimizing the activity of the catalysts is to distinguish and specify the active sites on the surface. In this thesis we use highly corrugated Pt surfaces and UHV techniques (TPD, LEED, and STM) to explore the effects of surface defects on adsorption and desorption of water and related adsorbates. We elucidate to what extent the substrate type influences the structure of interfacial water both in the monolayer and thin film regime. Our studies also show that step geometry is the determining factor in low temperature oxygen dissociation. Show less

An example of such a reaction is the Haber-Bosch process, which is used commercially to produce ammonia, an important starting material in the production of fertilisers. In theoretical descriptions of such chemical processes often approximations need to be made in order to keep the computational cost feasible, such as fixing the surface atoms in place, rather than allowing them to vibrate. In this work, several example systems (hydrogen dissociation on different metal surfaces) are used in order to test to what extent such approximations work well. Show less

Show moreThe study of gas-surface interaction dynamics is important both for the fundamental knowledge it provides and also to aid the development of applications involving processes such as sputtering, plasma etching and heterogeneous catalysis. Elementary steps in the interactions, such as chemical reactions, adsorption and scattering are prototypical of more complex processes and better understanding of them deepens our knowledge of such processes. In addition, experimental measurements of specific interactions can be used to validate advanced computer models. Hence the experiments in this thesis have been carried out under well-defined condition, namely in ultrahigh vacuum and using high-purity single-crystal samples. The thesis is primarily focussed on understanding the interaction of hyperthermal Ar and N (~4-6 eV) with Ru(0001) and Ag(111) via scattering studies. Ar is very inert and its interaction with surfaces is primarily repulsive in nature, while N atoms probe the surface chemisorption well. From the study of Ar scattering dynamics, surface properties have been probed. From N scattering studies, chemisorption dynamics have been investigated. It is found that the electronic state of the incident particle may play an important role in the gas-surface interaction. Separately, the influence of pre-adsorbed CO on Ru(0001) on D2 dissociation have been unravelled. Show less

Show moreThe studies in this thesis concentrate on memory for an emotional event, with a specific focus on completeness, consistency and accuracy of emotional memories and their predictors. In doing so, both field and laboratory studies were conducted. The results show that overall, memory for emotional events is fairly complete and consistent over time. Still, the human memory is sometimes incomplete and prone to inaccuracies and inconsistencies. Maybe an elephant never forgets, people occasionally do! Emotional state, psychiatric status and psychological variables, with the exception of (peri) traumatic dissociation, did not have a strong influence on completeness, consistency and accuracy of memory for emotional events.
