Show moreHomicide engenders broad moral concerns in society, and its aftermath can be understood as a barometer for criminal justice policy. Of all homicides committed, however, only some lead to arrest, to prosecution and ultimately to conviction in court. So far, no study has assessed the entire flow of homicide cases through the criminal justice system based on a nationwide sample. This study seeks to fill this empirical void by describing the entire flow of homicide cases and assessing the size of outflow at each stage of the criminal justice funnel in the Netherlands for a 20-year period. Our analysis highlights two main findings: First, the vast majority of suspects first identified by the police are ultimately sentenced for a homicide. Second, even in a country with low homicide rates and high rule of law indices, selection takes place at all stages of the criminal justice funnel. Whilst outflow mostly centres around exceptional clearance and legal factors, future work should assess the extent to which extra-legal characteristics play a role in crimes that are being investigated as potential homicides. Show moreAdvances in cancer treatments have improved clinical outcomes, leading to an increasing population of cancer survivors. However, this success is associated with high rates of short- and long-term cardiovascular (CV) toxicities. The number and variety of cancer drugs and CV toxicity types make long-term care a complex undertaking. This requires a multidisciplinary approach that includes expertise in oncology, cardiology and other related specialties, and has led to the development of the cardio-oncology subspecialty. This paper aims to provide an overview of the main adverse events, risk assessment and risk mitigation strategies, early diagnosis, medical and complementary strategies for prevention and management, and long-term follow-up strategies for patients at risk of cancer therapy-related cardiotoxicities. Research to better define strategies for early identification, follow-up and management is highly necessary. Although the academic cardio-oncology community may be the best vehicle to foster awareness and research in this field, additional stakeholders (industry, government agencies and patient organizations) must be involved to facilitate cross-discipline interactions and help in the design and funding of cardio-oncology trials. The overarching goals of cardio-oncology are to assist clinicians in providing optimal care for patients with cancer and cancer survivors, to provide insight into future areas of research and to search for collaborations with industry, funding bodies and patient advocates. However, many unmet needs remain. This document is the product of brainstorming presentations and active discussions held at the Cardiovascular Round Table workshop organized in January 2020 by the European Society of Cardiology. Show moreAs mentioned above, IVOCT, as a novel imaging modality, has played an active role in a wide range of CAD applications, including research and clinical routine. Due to its unparalleled high resolution and the ability to delineate complex vascular structures, IVOCT technology makes many precise measurement and novel applications possible. However, currently, a lot of analyses in IVOCT images are still relying on the manual work which decreases their value. The goal of this thesis is to develop robust and accurate (semi)automated methods that can detect and segment the interesting components in IVOCT pullback runs, such as implanted stent struts and side branches in 3D for accurate measurement, so that the results could contribute to medical research as well as for clinical decision-making. My thesis presents four different automated algorithms to detect metallic stent struts, bioresorbable vascular scaffold struts, side branches and all the common components in IVOCT images. It also presented a semi-automated method to assess the stent support to vessel wall and the stent-jailed side branch access through stent cells in 3-dimentional space Show less
