With an industrial perspective in mind, we try to synthesize particulate, high surface area materials with clean, scalable synthesis methods where possible and test their performance in H-Cell and gas diffusion electrode flow cell configurations. With a combination of characterization techniques, we find possible explanations for the catalytic behaviors. Show less

Show moreIn surface science there is great effort to move from studying simple, flat model surfaces in vacuum to investigating more complex model catalysts in gas environments (in situ). This thesis gives three examples of such studies using microscopy and spectroscopy.Exposure of ZnO(10-10) to moderate pressures of water in an in situ scanning tunneling microscope reveals that the surface roughens. The flat ZnO(10-10) is thus only conditionally suited as a model catalyst for reactions involving water.In the same microscope, surface gold oxide formation is observed on TiO2/Au(111) during CO oxidation at 1 bar pressure. Comparisons to the Au(111) surface suggest that the titania does not supply atomic oxygen to the Au(111) substrate as part of the reaction mechanism of the CO oxidation.Co(0001) is investigated as a model catalyst for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, the reaction of CO and H2 to form hydrocarbons. In this thesis the oxidation behavior of the cobalt and the adsorption of carbon species during the reaction are investigated using near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.Generally, this thesis exemplifies the significant influence that small concentrations of contaminants in gases and materials can have on the structure and behavior of surfaces in in situ studies. Show moreIn most applications, electrocatalysts exhibit a large surface area to volume ratio, for example using nanoparticles. To fully understand fundamental electrochemical processes at the length scale of these nanoparticles, it is necessary to use specialized experimental techniques. In this thesis, the stability and activity of platinum electrode surfaces are studied at the nano- and micrometer scale using Electrochemical Scanning Probe Microscopy (EC-SPM) techniques. Chapters 2 and 3 describe the roughening of an atomically flat Pt(111) surface upon repetitive oxidation and reduction. These data were acquired using a combination of Electrochemical Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (EC-STM) and Cyclic Voltammetry (CV). Chapter 4 describes the development of a new technique to resolve small differences in local reactivity: voltammetric Scanning Electrochemical Cell Microscopy (SECCM). The power of this technique is demonstrated by studying the reactivity of a polycrystalline Pt sample towards hydrazine oxidation. Finally, Chapter 5 compares the reactivity of small Pt ultramicroelectrodes to that of conventional macroelectrodes. Show less

Show moreFinding a new catalyst is no easy task, especially since our understanding of catalysts at the atomic level is still lacking. In this thesis, a step is made to combine model catalysts that we do understand with realistic industrial conditions. This methodology comprises both the preparation of complex model catalysts and the development of new instrumentation. The model catalysts under study were MoO3 on Al2O3/NiAl(110), MoS2 on Au(111) and AuOx/WO3/ReO3 on Au(111). For MoO3, it is shown that the O2 pressure during physical vapor deposition preparation affects the particle dispersion, allowing for tuning of the structural properties of the model catalyst. For MoS2, the aim was to image the atomic structure of the active sites during the hydrodesulfurization reaction. To achieve this, an in-house developped high-pressure scanning tunneling microscope was modified to increase its corrosion resistance. Thus, it was possible to show that hydrocarbons can play a key role in determining the dominant active site structure of the MoS2 catalyst. Using the same microscope, gold oxide particles were imaged on Au(111). From our images and simple thermodynamic considerations, we determined that these particles are suprisingly stable. Finally, new methodology was developped to provide chemical contrast to high-pressure scanning tunneling microscopy. Show less

Show more Catalysis is one of the most important technical and scientific developments, on which present-day society is based. For example, it is crucial to the production of fertilizers or clean fuels and needed for the abatement of exhaust gases. Frequently, the employed catalysts are being discovered in a very empirical way; by trial and error. However, designing catalysts based on detailed understanding is preferred. Obtaining understanding is very difficult, because catalysts are very complex materials. Furthermore, its properties often depend on the atmosphere surrounding the catalysts, i.e., the temperature and pressure of reactants and products, which they are exposed to, and these properties also change over time. The major part of this thesis focuses on structural changes of Pt model catalysts exposed to high oxygen pressures at elevated temperatures. The changes were measured with a ReactorSTM, a special version of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) adapted to operate at high pressure and temperatures. These observations show that various surface oxide with a single-layer thickness form under reaction conditions. These oxides are structurally and chemically different from the Pt bulk oxides. The second part describes a set of experiments to understand the role of low-coordinated atoms and water in Au-catalyzed CO oxidation. Show less

Show moreThe thesis is focused on the investigation of the electron transfer mechanisms leading to solar fuel production and to the identification of engineering principles that can be used to design materials able to improve charge separation. Molecular systems composed of three or more subunits arranged in a Donor-Antenna-Acceptor design are required to achieve efficient photoinduced charge separation. It is shown how structural changes in the systems design can be used to systematically optimize the energy gradients and electronic coupling between the molecular subunits, necessary to achieve controlled unidirectional charge transfer. To gain insight into the mechanisms governing the charge transfer processes within a molecular system, the process of photoinduced heterogeneous electron injection is investigated through nonadiabatic dynamics simulations. Coherent electron-nuclear vibrational effects are found to drive the electron transfer process by promoting the coherent superposition of the exciton and the charge transfer quantum state. A photoanode for solar water splitting comprising the functions of light-harvesting, charge separation and catalysis is also investigated. It is observed that, following a fast heterogeneous electron injection, the system catalytic activity is driven by a proton-coupled electron transfer mechanism in which the role of the solvent is crucial. Show moreCatalysis is the working horse of the chemical industry. In many cases, it is a poorly understood process taking place at the surfaces of nanoparticles under relatively harsh conditions, such as high pressures and high temperatures. This thesis focuses on new approaches to acquire atomic-scale information on catalytic processes on metal nanoparticles in high-pressure, high-temperature conditions. This thesis starts with a comprehensive approach to the development of novel instruments and methods for in-situ experiments on model catalysts under working conditions. We introduce the ReactorAFM, the world’s first high-pressure, high-temperature non-contact Atomic Force Microscope, and two software packages for data analysis. Next, we have applied several in-situ measurement techniques to study catalytic model systems at atmospheric pressures and elevated temperatures. We describe a study of the interaction of gas mixtures of nitric oxide and hydrogen on the Pt(110) surface, using surface X-ray diffraction. In the next chapter, we used similar mixtures but with a Pt nanoparticle model catalyst in a high-pressure reaction cell in a transmission electron microscope. Lastly, we have applied four in-situ techniques, including our new ReactorAFM, to investigate the role of thin oxide shells in spontaneous reaction oscillations on Pd nanoparticles during the catalytic oxidation of carbon monoxide Show less

Show moreThe primary goal of this thesis is to study the potential role of electrochemistry in finding new routes for sustainable chemicals from biomass in aqueous-phase solutions. In order to assess the potential of electrochemistry in biomass conversion, we developed an online HPLC system by using a fraction collector with a micrometer-sized sampling tip placed close to the working electrode, with the collected sample fractions subsequently analyzed in an offline HPLC system. To demonstrate this method, we applied it to the poly-ols, i.e. glycerol (C3H8O3), electro-oxidation on Au and Pt electrodes at different pH conditions, visualizing the concentration changes of glycerol and its reaction products in correspondence with the current measured in voltammetry, which brought us a concept to co-generate hydrogen and valuable chemicals (i.e. glyceraldehyde, glyceric acid, dihydroxyacetone, formic acid) with high selectivity depending on the applied potential. In addition, we aimed at single-cell synthesis of sorbitol from cellulosic material by generating glucose as an intermediate species. This thesis has demonstrated the separate reactions of cellobiose hydrolysis to glucose by acid and hydroxyl radical on an anode and glucose hydrogenation to sorbitol on a cathode in an electrolysis cell. Show moreThis thesis describes the development of a combined high-pressure/ultrahigh-vacuum flow reactor for the study of model catalysts by means of surface x-ray diffraction and grazing incidence small angle scattering. The system was used to measure a stability diagram for the different oxide phases (surface oxide, bulk-like oxides) that exist on Pd(100) during catalytic CO oxidation at near ambient pressures. As soon as an oxide was present the reactivity of the surface was found to be mass transfer limited by the flux of CO molecules reaching the surface. Experiments on spontaneous reaction oscillations of the CO oxidation rate on Pd(100) reveal that a high density of steps strongly alters the stability of the thin, catalytically active palladium oxide film. It is shown that stabilization of the metal, caused by the steps and consequent destabilization of the oxide, is at the heart of the well-known reaction rate oscillations exhibited during CO oxidation at atmospheric pressure. Lastly reaction oscillations on supported Pd nanoparticles are shown to be accompanied by shape changes of the particles consistent with the formation and removal of a thin palladium oxide film on the particles. Furthermore, the thesis describes three separate catalytic systems at ~ 1 bar, and elevated temperatures. Firstly, NO reduction on Pt(100), in which a mathematical model for the reaction mechanism, following Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetics, is proposed. Secondly, CO oxidation, in which the Pt(110) surface is atomically resolved at high p, T. Thirdly, the thesis describes a successful pilot experiment about the hydrodesulphurization of thiophene, which is catalytically activated by molybdenum disulphide nano-crystallites on an Au(111) support. Show moreAn industrially applicable process was developed for the synthesis of epoxy resin components. A catalytic reaction was explored towards allyl phenyl ethers that prevents the use of chloride-containing starting materials and thus formation of chloride-containing side products. The preferred allylating agent is allyl alcohol or its derivatives since this only produces water as a side product. Ruthenium and palladium complexes were used as catalysts and their structure proved to be of key importance for the outcome of the reaction. By fine-tuning the catalyst structure with phosphine ligands, the reaction could be performed highly selective. Besides the homogeneous catalytic system, also retrieval of the catalyst was studied and the scope of the reaction was explored. Show less
