Show moreEarly behavioural inhibition, a temperamental characteristic defined by fearful, overly-sensitive, avoidant, or withdrawn reactions to the unknown, is a predictor of later social anxiety. However, not all behaviourally inhibited children develop anxiety problems, and attentional bias to threat has been proposed to moderate the relation between behavioural inhibition and anxiety. The current study aimed to further specify the relation between early behavioural inhibition and later social anxiety by testing this potentially moderating role of childhood attentional bias to threat. Behavioural inhibition was assessed during toddlerhood (age 2.5 years) using laboratory observations of children's behaviours in response to unknown objects and situations. When children were 7.5 years old, attentional bias was measured in 86 children (46 girls) using both a visual probe task and a visual search task with angry and happy faces. Child social anxiety was measured using questionnaires completed by the child and both parents, and clinical interviews conducted with both parents. Our results showed that while early behavioural inhibition was related to later social anxiety, there was no evidence for a moderation of this relation by attentional bias, suggesting that the relation between early fearful temperament and later social anxiety holds across children, independent of their attentional biases. Show moreIt is common in life to not perform at the very top of our cognitive abilities. This phenomenon usually exacerbates when we are under high levels of stress and in people with psychiatric disorders. Attention to negative information is considered to play a crucial role in the development and maintenance of these disorders, especially anxiety-related disorders. Attention to negative information is not necessarily bad as it is an evolutionary function to protect us from dangerous situations. However, it can be destructive when it occurs constantly or when we need to focus on an important task. There are many situations where we have to perform difficult cognitive tasks and we worry about our performance or other people’s evaluation. Trait cognitive control, the ability to control attention and maintain a goal-relevant behaviour, is suggested to play a key role in the relationships between anxiety/stress, attention to negative information, and cognitive performance. Yet, the evidence is limited and further investigation is needed. In the current thesis, the relations between anxiety/stress, attention to emotional information, and cognitive performance will be investigated in a multidisciplinary approach, synthesizing clinical and cognitive factors and neurobiological underpinnings, while focusing on the role of trait cognitive control. Show moreThe reading motivation of the majority of students declines in the upper half of primary school, which implies a risk for aliteracy: Students can read but, due to lack of practice, their skills remain underdeveloped (Chapter 2). In this thesis we have explored causes and solutions for this important issue. A potential cause is that due to an accumulation of negative reading experiences, students acquire negative emotions about reading. Findings in chapter 3 show that anxiety about reading exists, in particular among low performing students. This anxiety likely contributes to a loss of interest in reading. In chapter 4 we reported on an experiment that tested whether the availability of reading materials make a difference. Students from schools with an enriched school library were more motivated to read, read more often and were better readers than students from schools without an enriched school library. Finally, in Chapter 5 we examined the potential of digital guidance during students__ reading. We found that particularly a susceptible group (carriers of the DRD4 7-repeat allele) benefits from external support during reading. These students show increased learning and even outperform their less susceptible peers when support is provided. Show less

Show moreWe investigated the effects of two novel treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The first treatment is Attentional Bias Modification (ABM). This treatment for anxiety disorders has become quite popular in a relatively short time and was featured in recent articles in the New York Times and The Economist. ABM is a brief, computerized treatment in which patients are trained to keep their attention away from the threatening stimuli from which they automatically attend. Since attentional bias (AB) is considered an important feature of PTSD, we tested ABM in a randomized controlled trial. ABM did not effect PTSD, nor did it change AB. We also investigated an individualized version of ABM in a case series and saw no therapeutic effects. Since the current popularity of ABM is based on smaller studies than our RCT, dissemination efforts may have to be reconsidered. Next, we explored the usefulness of a 8-week course of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) in a pilot study with patients with chronic PTSD. No adverse effects were observed and patients evaluated the course positively. About half of the patients who finished MBCT demonstrated positive clinical effects. However, considering the early dropout rate, different formats may have to be developed to increase its acceptability in this group. Show less
