Show moreAlthough the sustainability movement began to take shape in the early nineteen seventies, it was not until 1987 with the publication of the Brundtland Report that it acquired institutional recognition. The academic community’s engagement with the movement came a few years later in the form of sustainability science, which developed and consolidated in keeping with the dynamics of any new scientific discipline. This paper reviews its development and trends through an analysis of the papers listed in the Web of Science category ‘Green and Sustainable Science and Technology’. The bibliometric methodology used included social network and multivariate analysis focusing on journal, discipline and subject inter-relationships to map and analyse developments in this new field. The main findings showed that the category grew moderately until 2007 and exponentially thereafter. Four clusters of journals with different patterns of development were identified: sustainability, renewable energies, green chemistry and green ecology, with the first accounting for two-thirds of the papers published in the area. Mainstream and emerging subjects were determined on the grounds of co-word analysis. Show less

Show moreWith the globalization of higher education, visibility has become a central asset for attracting resources and visibility. In this context, identifying the institutions that can stand out in certain areas is of vital importance. This paper analyses the visibility of Brazilian public universities from two sources: Web of Science databases and international rankings of universities. Bibliometric indicators are used to detect the specialty of higher education institutions. The obtaining of the specialization profile allowed to compare the disciplinary and thematic orientation of the Brazilian university system and to detect the strengths of the institutions. Show less

Show moreSustainability is one of the topics that has aroused most interest in recent years. The economic, social, environmental and political impact of this field makes it a interesting subject for the study trough different approaches. In the scientific field, this interest is evident in the growing number of R&D&i programmes funded by international organizations, scientific publications, cration of a new thematic category in Web of Science and mention in social media. This paper analyses whether there is a relationship between the academic impact and the social impact of research in this field considering bibliometrics and altmetrics indicators in Green and Sustainable Science and technology.
