Show moreWe study the postinflation dynamics of multifield models involving nonminimal couplings using lattice simulations to capture significant nonlinear effects like backreaction and rescattering. We measure the effective equation of state and typical timescales for the onset of thermalization, which could affect the usual mapping between predictions for primordial perturbation spectra and measurements of anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background radiation. For large values of the nonminimal coupling constants, we find efficient particle production that gives rise to nearly instantaneous preheating. Moreover, the strong single-field attractor behavior that was previously identified persists until the end of preheating, thereby suppressing typical signatures of multifield models. We therefore find that predictions for primordial observables in this class of models retain a close match to the latest observations. Show less

Show moreThe transition from monolayers to multilayered structures in bacterial colonies is a fundamental step in biofilm development. Observed across different morphotypes and species, this transition is triggered within freely growing bacterial microcolonies comprising a few hundred cells. Using a combination of numerical simulations and analytical modeling, here we demonstrate that this transition originates from the competition between growth-induced in-plane active stresses and vertical restoring forces, due to the cell-substrate interactions. Using a simple chainlike colony of laterally confined cells, we show that the transition sets when individual cells become unstable to rotations; thus it is localized and mechanically deterministic. Asynchronous cell division renders the process stochastic, so that all the critical parameters that control the onset of the transition are continuously distributed random variables. Here we demonstrate that the occurrence of the first division in the colony can be approximated as a Poisson process in the limit of large cell numbers. This allows us to approximately calculate the probability distribution function of the position and time associated with the first extrusion. The rate of such a Poisson process can be identified as the order parameter of the transition, thus highlighting its mixed deterministic-stochastic nature. Show less

Show moreWe report on the realization and application of nondestructive three-qubit parity measurements on nuclear spin qubits in diamond. We use high-fidelity quantum logic to map the parity of the joint state of three nuclear spin qubits onto an electronic spin qubit that acts as an ancilla, followed by a single-shot nondestructive readout of the ancilla combined with an electron spin echo to ensure outcome-independent evolution of the nuclear spins. Through the sequential application of three such parity measurements, we demonstrate the generation of genuine multipartite entangled states out of the maximally mixed state. Furthermore, we implement a single-shot version of the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger experiment that can generate a quantum versus classical contradiction in each run. Finally, we test a state-independent noncontextuality inequality in eight dimensions. The techniques and insights developed are relevant for fundamental tests as well as for quantum information protocols such as quantum error correction. Show less

Show moreThe centers of most galaxies contain massive black holes surrounded by dense star clusters. The structure of these clusters determines the rate and properties of observable transient events, such as flares from tidally disrupted stars and gravitational-wave signals from stars spiraling into the black hole. Most estimates of these rates enforce spherical symmetry on the cluster. Here we show that, in the course of generic evolutionary processes, a star cluster surrounding a black hole can undergo a robust phase transition from a spherical thermal equilibrium to a lopsided equilibrium, in which most stars are on high-eccentricity orbits with aligned orientations. The rate of transient events is expected to be much higher in the ordered phase. Better models of cluster formation and evolution are needed to determine whether clusters should be found in the ordered or disordered phase. Show less

Show moreIn holographic inflation, the 4D cosmological dynamics is postulated to be dual to the renormalization group flow of a 3D Euclidean conformal field theory with marginally relevant operators. The scalar potential of the 4D theory—in which inflation is realized—is highly constrained, with use of the Hamilton–Jacobi equations. In multifield holographic realizations of inflation, fields additional to the inflaton cannot display underdamped oscillations (that is, their wave functions contain no oscillatory phases independent of the momenta). We show that this result is exact, independent of the number of fields, the field space geometry, and the shape of the inflationary trajectory followed in multifield space. In the specific case where the multifield trajectory is a straight line or confined to a plane, it can be understood as the existence of an upper bound on the dynamical masses m of extra fields of the form m≤3H/2 up to slow roll corrections. This bound corresponds to the analytic continuation of the well-known Breitenlohner–Freedman bound found in anti–de Sitter spacetimes in the case when the masses are approximately constant. The absence of underdamped oscillations implies that a detection of “cosmological collider” oscillatory patterns in the non-Gaussian bispectrum would not only rule out single-field inflation, but also holographic inflation or any inflationary model based on the Hamilton–Jacobi equations. Hence, future observations have the potential to exclude, at once, an entire class of inflationary theories, regardless of the details involved in their model building. Show less

Show moreWe investigate the turbulent dynamics of a two-dimensional active nematic liquid crystal constrained to a curved surface. Using a combination of hydrodynamic and particle-based simulations, we demonstrate that the fundamental structural features of the fluid, such as the topological charge density, the defect number density, the nematic order parameter, and defect creation and annihilation rates, are approximately linear functions of the substrate Gaussian curvature, which then acts as a control parameter for the chaotic flow. Our theoretical predictions are then compared with experiments on microtubule-kinesin suspensions confined on toroidal droplets, finding excellent qualitative agreement. Show less
