These indigenous institutions have been pivotal in shaping and maintaining the care of the elderly within the community for generations.The study explores Tenggerese people's perspective on combining traditional, transitional, and modern elderly care systems. It seeks to understand the role traditional institutions play in the sustainable development and integration of elderly care. The cultural diversity of the population is also related to differences in health behaviour. Nursing as a profession has to be able to encourage clients and patients, particularly with Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD) to obtain holistic nursing in an effort to meet all client needs, regardless of their ethno-cultural background and their diverse beliefs and values about health and healing. Every effort to improve cultural competency among nursing practitioners who fully work with diverse patients from the numerous ethno-cultural groups in Indonesia is a challenge. One important step which can be taken is to learn and understand the Sundanese people as the dominant cultural group in West Java. The situation certainly requires a deepening of understanding of social behaviour and public health in terms of how to use traditional institutions such as kearifan kesehatan lokal, as well as indigenous knowledge of jamu and ubar kampung in dealing with health care of the elderly with CVD. Show moreThe Sundanese people, the largest ethnic group in West Java, have been using traditional medicine for a long time. Known as ubar kampung, Sundanese indigenous knowledge, beliefs and practices of traditional medicine are based on local people’s knowledge and use of Medicinal, Aromatic, and Cosmetic (MAC) plants. MAC plants have continuously provided the Sundanese community with practical and readily available traditional medicine. Despite the remarkable contribution of indigenous medical knowledge in society, the practical utilisation of indigenous resources at the community level have hardly ever been the focus of research. At the same time, the practice of Sundanese traditional medicine in West Java is also at risk of being lost. To address the lack of studies on indigenous knowledge and its role in patterns of health care utilisation, this study aims to document, describe, and analyse knowledge of, beliefs in, and practices with MAC plants among the Sundanese community members in the environment where biomedicine and traditional medicine are co-existing. While most studies on health care utilisation are currently limited by the use of one medical system - generally speaking, the modern medical system - the present study has a primary focus on utilisation across medical systems. The broad objective of this study is to explore the utilisation of the plural medical system with particular attention to the role of knowledge and practice of ubar kampung by the Sundanese community for the treatment of diabetes mellitus.This study employs the ‘Leiden Ethnosystems’ Approach’ methodology to document and analyse Indigenous Knowledge Systems at the community level which consists of three basic concepts including the Participant’s View (PV), the Field of Ethnological Study (FES) and the Historical Dimension (HD). In the context of health care utilisation behaviour, this approach can also be extended to the concept of medical pluralism in which the traditional, transitional, and modern medical systems co-exist within the community. Show moreThe research provides insight into disease behavior in both rural and semi-urban areas in Serengeti in Tanzania. It focuses on the motives and behaviors that patients exhibit when relying on local healthcare systems, classified as traditional, transitional or modern. It describes the availability, accessibility and patterns of use of these healthcare systems, in particular how they are embedded in the local cultural heritage. It shows that behavioral patterns are dominated by psycho-social and cultural factors. In addition, background characteristics, intervening factors and situation-dependent factors that influence usage patterns are described, analyzed and explained. The analytical model based on the school of "Ethnoscience" shows where the use of these medical systems is related to the historical, cultural and economic factors that determine the daily lives of the inhabitants. The analysis of the research data provides recommendations for education and training of local middle management staff in support of integrated transcultural public health policy, as initiated by the local government of Serengeti in collaboration with the local training institutions. The findings are used as input for the intended master course in Transcultural Public Health Management in the area, and elsewhere in similar circumstances. Show moreThis study attempts to understand how indigenous community institutions pose an important role in sustainable community-based development, including the integration between local culture and development. Gintingan as an indigenous community institution in Subang of West Java is used as an example of how the local people of Kabupaten Subang operationalise their indigenous beliefs and systems in their livelihood, and how dynamic processes influence the utilisation of the indigenous institutions to reach the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the community level. In particular, this study identifies local people’s preferences towards the available ‘Plural Community Institutional System (PCINS)’ in the society: indigenous, transitional, and modern institutions. The independent and intervening factors, i.e. socio-demographic, psycho-social, as well as government and private promotional factors, are examined in the study, to understand the dynamic influences of how the local people of Subang choose their preferences to utilise the available community institutional systems. The study also seeks to contribute ethnoscientific findings to the development debate about the top-down versus bottom-up approaches in development. In particular, the discourse examines the roles of both approaches in poverty reduction, by using the community institutional systems approach. Show less

Show moreA scientific correlational study on human resource and organisational policy-oriented study, which was conducted in the Mara Region of Tanzania. It specifically investigates major factors, which correlate to interprofessional collaborative behaviours in the context of health service delivery between traditional and modern medical practitioners. Interprofessional collaboration is a sine qua non stage towards fully integrated health care encapsulated in a coined Swahili concept of afya jumuishi. The sample population in this study includes medical practitioners from both Modern Medicine (MM) and Traditional Medicine (TM) systems in the Mara Region. The operationalisation of the concept of interprofessional collaboration as used in the analytical model of this study follows the definition by the ‘Centre for Advancement of Collaborative Strategies in Health’ (2003), which defines it as behavioural patterns as part of synergy formation among different professionals. Such behavioural patterns have two interrelated components of dependent factors which include: the behavioural patterns of sharing resources; and - the behavioural patterns of working jointly for clients. The analytical model used is based on Slikkerveer (1990) which is built up on seven blocks of variables. These variables are independent variables, which include socio-demographic, psycho-social, enabling, trustworthiness, organisational and intervening variables as well as the dependent variables which include collaborative behavioural patterns of exchange of resources and collaborative behavioural patterns of working jointly for clients and patients. The general major challenges of the Twenty-First Century facing Traditional Medicine (TM) in the country include: - Lack of enabling environment towards Traditional Medicine (TM); - Absence of a mechanism, which promotes integration between modern and Traditional Medicine (TM); - Weak protection of indigenous intellectual property rights and unsustainable harvesting of medicinal plants; - Dwindling of natural resources; - Lack of indigenous information system and reliable data bank; - The need to carry out education, research and development on Traditional Medicine (TM); - The problem of safety of products of Traditional Medicine (TM); contextualization of the world’s eligions on teachings about Traditional Medicine (TM); - Moral degradation and the breaking of social structures;- Shocking poverty in the society. Show moreThe study about paraji (Traditional Birth Attendants - TBA) and bidan (Community Midwives -CMW) in Rancaekek, a subdistrict in West Java, Indonesia, aimed to contribute to the knowledge and understanding about the relationships between traditional and modern Maternal and Child Health (MCH) systems. This study analyses how existing MCH systems function in a community where two different types of health care are accessible. To this end, the behaviours of pregnant and perinatal women are studied to learn how they utilize the MCH services in their community. The research method of the study is using qualitative and quantitative approaches complementarily, and also implementing the Leiden Ethnosystems Approach. The result of the study is: that the role of paraji as well as bidan in the community should be valed equal in MCH care. The recommendation is: that current MCH practices undergo revision to a certain extent to create an integrated and partnerships among paraji and bidan to generate alternantive strategies for development of MCH care, from the bottom up through community participation. Show moreThe introduction demonstrates that medicinal plants obviously play an important role in health care in Indonesia. Apart from the lack of access to the modern health care system by, the larger segment of the population, the cultural appropriateness of local herbal medicine is a major factor in the predominant use of traditional medicine. The people of Indonesia have used medicinal, aromatic and cosmetic (MAC) plants __ often in the form of plant parts mixtures called jamu - in their daily lives from time immemorial. While currently, there is a growing threat of loss of such knowledge, especially of the utilization of MAC plants, the government shows some concern about the exchange of information and communication on MAC plants which would not only safeguard the cultural identity of the nation, but also provide a useful alternative to Western medicine. Hence, the general aim of this study is to document and analyse the factors involved in the process of communication behaviour on MAC plant knowledge and practice among members of a local social organization arisan in the research area. Thus, an analysis is conducted of the role of various categories of factors which appear to be involved in this complicated communication process from the local people__s point of view, in which particular attention is paid to the __invisible__ factors which seem to play a determinant role leading to the patterns of communication behaviour in the arisan. Show moreThis investigation is an attempt to gain a better understanding of the religious and socio-political organization of pre-colonial Tobabatak society. In literature the traditionally stateless Tobabatak society is usually depicted as being organized principally along kinship lines and there is still a widespread perception that in pre-colonial times there were no more highly developed political units than villages. Fieldwork, archival research, and research into old Tobabatak texts have produced a different picture. Tobabatak society did indeed never transform into statehood (in the sense of having a centralized government with the military power to enforce its decisions) but it had a functional alternative at its disposal: The many genuinely democratically organized ‘house-organizations’ (bius) of which the society consisted, each composed of thousands or even tens of thousands of members, were abl e to organize co-operation for the construction of irrigation-facilities and other communal projects (sometimes on a huge scale) and for the permanent infrastructure of hydraulic agriculture. Within these house-organizations the parbaringin as spiritual as well as political representatives of the smaller units of society on the higher levels, and the paniaran as the representatives of the women played a leading role without ever using any military might.
