Show moreThe complete nucleotide sequence of the vir B locus, from the octopine Ti plasmid of Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain 15955, has been determined. In the large vir B-operon (9600 nucleotides) we have identified eleven open reading frames, designated vir B1 to vir B11. From DNA sequence analysis it is proposed that nearly all VirB products, i.e. VirB1 to VirB9, are secreted or membrane associated proteins. Interestingly, both a membrane protein (VirB4) and a potential cytoplasmic protein (VirB11) contain the consensus amino acid sequence of ATP-binding proteins. In view of the conjugative T-DNA transfer model, the VirB proteins are suggested to act at the bacterial surface and there play an important role in directing T-DNA transfer to plant cells. Show less

Show moreIn this Comment we report on small differences found in the ion-core pseudopotentials of Si between our results and the values tabulated earlier by Bachelet, Hamann, and Schlüter. It is shown that the rounding of the parameters in their tables leads to inaccuracies. Breunese nodigde Toonen uit om een gastcollege te geven in Leiden naar aanleiding van zijn proefschrift "Denken over binnenlands bestuur. Toonen kwam en Breunese zat knikkend, schrijvend in de collegebanken. Ze leken het volkomen eens te zijn, maar een week later wachtte de studenten een verrassing. Breunese bleek het helemáál niet zo eens te zijn met Toonen en de volgende dag heette het in de wandelgangen: Breunese heeft Toonen gekraakt. Show less

Mijn terugkomst, zo'n drie weken later, viel samen met de laatste dag van een veertiendaagse periode van zonneschijn die, achteraf gezien, meteen ook het enige hoogtepunt van de zomermaanden geweest bleek te zijn.
