Show moreRadio jets are important to the evoultion of galaxies. However, it is still not fully understood how a radio jet can be triggered. This thesis mainly investigates the morphology and kinematics of galaxies hosting radio AGNs detected in the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS). We showed that galaxies with powerful jets have a rounder shape and weaker disc component. The radio jets of these galaxies also have a higher chance to be misaligned with the minor axis of galaxies. These works reveal the importance of the evolutionary path of galaxies to the jet-triggering process. A galaxy with a merger-dominated history would be a better breeding ground for a powerful radio jet. Show less

Show moreChina’s rapid growth was fueled by investments that grew more than 10-fold since 1995. Little is known about how the capital assets acquired, while being used in productive processes for years or decades, satisfy global final consumption of goods and services, or how the resource use and emissions that occurred during capital formation are attributable to past or future consumption. Here, enabled by a new global model of capital formation and use, we quantify the linkages over the past 2 decades and into the future between six environmental pressures (EPs) associated with China’s capital formation and attributable to Chinese as well as non-Chinese consumption. We show that only 35% of the capital assets acquired by China from 1995 to 2015, representing 32–39% of the associated EPs (e.g., water consumption, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and metal ore extractions), have been depreciated, while the majority rest will serve future production and consumption. The outsourcing of capital services and the associated EPs are considerable, ranging from 14 to 25% of depending on the EP indicators. Without accounting for the capital–final consumption linkages across time and space, one would miscalculate China’s environmental footprints related to the six EPs by big margins, from −61% to +114%. Show moreThe global popularity of green roofs (GRs) rises as urban runoff becomes a primary environmental concern in both developed and developing countries. Although a growing number of studies have measured the runoff retention (RR) performance of GRs and investigated the underpinning factors, a systematic and quantitative understanding is lacking. This study applies a statistical approach on a dataset of 2375 original experimental samples associated with the RR performance of GRs observed across 21 countries, consolidated from 75 internationally peer-reviewed studies published in 2005–2020. The results show that the sampled RR rates (i.e., the proportion of rainfall retained on a per-event basis) range widely (0–100%), with an average of 62%. Rainfall intensity, substrate depth, GR surface coverage, climate type, vegetation type, and season type partially explain the variances in retention performance. Moreover, the effects of some factors (e.g., rainfall intensity) are not isolated but contingent on other factors (e.g., vegetative cover). This global synthesis shows few samples emanate from Africa, Central America, and Central Asia, highlighting the need of more GR research and applications in these regions. The average GR RR rate appears lower than some specified in green building standards, which implies the need to further improve the RR performance of GRs or combine GRs with other RR measures. Contingent effects of GR RR influencing factors demonstrate the need to leverage design parameters and to account for local weather and climate characteristics in the optimization of GR performance. Show moreIntegrating the social and natural sciences to effectively tackle the intertwined challenges represented by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has been advocated for years. However, the practice is challenging, especially with respect to the beliefs, morals, and practices of individuals and groups or, more succinctly put, culture, which, despite attracting growing awareness, remains understated in sustainability. Here, we examine how and to what extent cultural values are linked to the achievement of the SDGs. Synthesizing knowledge from more than 300 publications, we show that cultural traits are linked to the achievement of all 17 SDGs and 79% of SDG targets. Further, empirical understanding obtained from a panel data analysis highlights that cultural values explain as much as 26% of the variations in the SDG achievements, yet the links are strikingly divergent across cultural traits and indicators. Our findings imply the need to consider more cultural contexts and nuances in sustainability science communications and policy design and to develop new cross-disciplinary solutions to sustainability challenges. Show moreCRISPR-Cas9 technology has revolutionized genome editing and is applicable to the organoid field. However, precise integration of exogenous DNA sequences into human organoids is lacking robust knock-in approaches. Here, we describe CRISPR-Cas9-mediated homology-independent organoid transgenesis (CRISPR-HOT), which enables efficient generation of knock-in human organoids representing different tissues. CRISPR-HOT avoids extensive cloning and outperforms homology directed repair (HDR) in achieving precise integration of exogenous DNA sequences into desired loci, without the necessity to inactivate TP53 in untransformed cells, which was previously used to increase HDR-mediated knock-in. CRISPR-HOT was used to fluorescently tag and visualize subcellular structural molecules and to generate reporter lines for rare intestinal cell types. A double reporter-in which the mitotic spindle was labelled by endogenously tagged tubulin and the cell membrane by endogenously tagged E-cadherin-uncovered modes of human hepatocyte division. Combining tubulin tagging with TP53 knock-out revealed that TP53 is involved in controlling hepatocyte ploidy and mitotic spindle fidelity. CRISPR-HOT simplifies genome editing in human organoids.Artegiani, Hendriks et al. describe a CRISPR-Cas9-based method to efficiently generate human knock-in organoids using non-homologous end joining to study rare intestinal cell types and human hepatocyte division.
