In the current study, principles for pre-service teachers' participatory action research are examined based on teacher educators’ views and actions while they implement participatory action research in a teacher education program. Across three dimensions (cultural-discursive, material-economic, social-political), the findings shed light on how student participation and participatory action research can be implemented in a teacher education program and how preservice teachers can be prepared for and supported in collaborating with their school students. Show moreThis thesis investigated the extent to which participation of school students in decision-making processes can be achieved, including through participatory action research (PAR) in teacher education. Data were collected from observations, research reports of pre-service teachers (PSTs) and interviews with PSTs and teacher educators. The aim was to enable students-teacher collaboration at an intensive level and have real influence on changes in teaching practice. The study found that some PST-projects exhibited the first stages of development towards this goal and that student participation was possible within limited time frames and contexts. School students were involved in designing and implementing the research projects, and they thereby contributed to changes in the content of their teaching and learning or in their circumstances. The study also highlighted the need for a higher level of student participation than just having a voice and being able to express opinions.The study developed a matrix for describing and designing participatory research practices (the SPinSTAR matrix), which distinguishes four levels of participation during different research phases. Furthermore, the study provided a set of principles for PAR that can provide more detailed insights into the participatory qualities of practices and the intertwined mechanisms that influence student participation. Show moreThis study focuses on pre-service teachers’ views of the conditions that foster their participatory action research practices in secondary schools and on how these conditions can inform the development of a teacher education program for a participatory approach. By using the Theory of Practice Architectures as an analytical lens, eight cases of participatory action research projects were studied at two interrelated sites of pre-service teachers’ learning: the teacher education institute and the internship school. Findings shed light on the conditions for fostering participatory action research practices in a teacher education context in terms of three kinds of arrangements, i.e. cultural-discursive, material-economic, and social-political. Based on the findings, a set of 17 principles for supporting participatory research practices is presented that can be used to assess the viability of preservice teachers’ participatory action research within a teacher education program, and that also supports a well-aligned institute-school collaboration. Show moreIn de afgelopen jaren is steeds meer aandacht gekomen voor de rol van leraren bij onderwijsinnovatie en het eigenaarschap dat die rol met zich meebrengt. Een belangrijk uitgangspunt daarbij is dat leraren de innovaties uitvoeren en dat daarom eigenaarschap en betrokkenheid van belang zijn. Bovendien wordt daarmee de rol van de leraar als expert op het terrein van leren erkend.Op verschillende manieren is in de afgelopen jaren de rol van de leraar als onderwijsvernieuwer versterkt, onder andere via regelingen als het LerarenOntwikkelFonds (LOF) en Onderwijspioniers. Onderzoek laat zien dat dergelijke regelingen bijdragen aan vernieuwingen in het onderwijs, aan de motivatie en het leiderschap van leraren, en aan netwerken van leraren (Ten Bosch, Buitelaar, Droppers, Gruijthuijzen, Langelaar & Molenaar, 2017; Ten Bosch, Droppers, Gruijthuijzen, Hendriks, Moolenaar & Van Tuijl, 2018). Toch is er nog weinig zicht op de wijze waarop het werken aan (zelf geïnitieerde) innovatieprojecten bijdraagt aan professionalisering van leraren.In dit onderzoek staat daarom de vraag ‘Op welke wijze dragen door leraren geïnitieerde innovaties bij aan hun professionalisering?’ centraal. Daarvoor zijn drie deelvragen beantwoord: Wat heeft de leraar geleerd? Hoe heeft de leraar geleerd? Welke factoren zijn van invloed op het leren en wat is deze invloed?Om antwoord te vinden op deze vragen zijn 32 leraren uit het primair onderwijs (po), het voortgezet onderwijs (vo) en het middelbaar beroepsonderwijs (mbo) twee keer geïnterviewd binnen een tijdsbestek van een half jaar. Deze leraren initieerden zelf een onderwijsinnovatie. Een deel van deze leraren maakte gebruik van een ondersteuningsprogramma (het LOF), een deel niet. Op basis van de interviews ontstaat inzicht in de wijze waarop een door leraren zelf geïnitieerde onderwijsinnovatie binnen of buiten de eigen onderwijsinstelling bijdraagt aan de professionalisering van die leraren.De uitkomsten van dit onderzoek laten zien dat leraren zich vooral ontwikkelen op onderwerpen die te maken hebben met het organiseren van een innovatieproces en minder met de inhoud van de innovatie zelf. Denk hierbij aan het ontwikkelen van communicatiestijlen en -strategieën, bouwen aan netwerken en sociale relaties in de school, reflecteren, samenwerken en het samen werken aan en ontwikkelen van een gedeelde visie. Dat is niet verwonderlijk, omdat leraren die een innovatie initiëren vaak min of meer expert zijn in het thema van hun innovatie, maar nog weinig expertise hebben in veranderprocessen. Door een innovatieproces te initiëren en vorm te geven lopen ze tegen vraagstukken aan van innovatie- en implementatieprocessen en begeven ze zich buiten hun comfortzone. Dat biedt krachtige impulsen voor het leren op het gebied van deze thema’s. Tegelijkertijd blijkt uit de interviews dat leraren het lastig vinden om hun leeropbrengsten expliciet te benoemen. Die blijven vaak impliciet.Daarnaast laat het onderzoek zien welke factoren een rol spelen bij door leraren geïnitieerde innovatieprocessen. Belangrijke succesvoorwaarden hebben betrekking op ondersteuning en erkenning door leidinggevenden, ondersteuning van collega’s, tijd en ontwikkelruimte. Deze voorwaarden dragen bij aan succeservaringen, zowel in het innovatieproces als in het eigen professionaliseringsproces.De uitkomsten van het onderzoek laten zien dat het initiëren en implementeren van onderwijsinnovaties specifieke vaardigheden vraagt die niet standaard tot het repertoire van leraren behoren. Ondersteuning van leraren bij het opzetten en organiseren van innovaties is daarom van belang. Die ondersteuning kan ook een rol spelen in het expliciteren van leeropbrengsten, zodat die ook binnen de school onder collega’s gedeeld kunnen worden. Daarmee ontstaat er geleidelijk een gedeelde kennisbasis rond het organiseren en implementeren van innovaties, waar meer leraren in een school uit kunnen putten en die bijdraagt aan een sterker gedeeld eigenaarschap van leraren bij onderwijsinnovaties.Leraren zijn een belangrijke factor bij de realisatie van onderwijsinnovaties. Het LerarenOntwikkelFonds (LOF) heeft dan ook als doel om leraren in staat te stellen op eigen initiatief en naar eigen inzicht vorm te geven aan hun professioneel handelen, het onderwijs te verbeteren en de beroepsgroep te versterken. Onderliggende doelen zijn enerzijds de professionele ruimte en het krachtig leraarschap (teacher leadership) te vergroten en versterken, en anderzijds de regie op de ontwikkeling van het onderwijs bij de beroepsgroep zelf te leggen.Het LOF stelt leraren in staat een eigen creatief en ambitieus initiatief voor beter onderwijs te ontwikkelen en te delen met een netwerk van gelijkgestemde collega’s. Dat vraagt niet alleen om het formuleren van een idee voor onderwijsverandering, maar ook om de daadwerkelijke realisatie en implementatie van dat idee, binnen en/of buiten de eigen onderwijspraktijk. Uitgangspunt is dat de leraar bij elke fase van het proces de regie in handen heeft. Show less

Show moreThis study addresses the nature and level of school student participation at various stages of participatory action research conducted by pre-service teachers (PSTs). PSTs’ research reports were analyzed by means of the SPinSTAR matrix, in which four levels of student participation were distinguished: Inform, Consult, Participate and Collaborate. Results show that student participation in PST research occurred mostly at the less intensive levels (Inform, Consult). Furthermore, they participated mostly in the preparatory stages of the research projects. However, most PSTs came to see their school students in a broader sense as worthwhile partners in an educational endeavor. Show less

Show moreTeachers generally seem to have limited knowledge of, access to and interest in insights from academic educational research. A possible way to bridge the gap between research and practice might be research by teachers. This line of thinking has found its way to policy actions of the Dutch government, in which master programs for teachers are promoted. Yet evidence of positive effects of teacher research is minimal and somewhat ambiguous. The current study aims to answer the following research question: ‘How is teacher research evaluated with respect to the professional development of teachers and knowledge utilization in schools?’ First, a biographical study has been conducted with 36 teachers (primary education, secondary education and vocational education). Second, a Q-sort questionnaire was administered with a small group of teachers from each educational sector, which measures beliefs about teacher research as a professional development strategy. The preliminary conclusions indicate that a master program contributes to teachers’ professional development, among others, in terms of their ability to conduct teacher research. However, for knowledge utilization in schools to take place, teachers with a master degree are a helpful but not a sufficient condition. Show less

In various policy actions of the Dutch government, an assumption is made that teachers who had carried out a master thesis are able to generate knowledge and stimulate knowledge utilization in schools (Ministerie van OCW, 2013). Yet evidence of positive effects of teacher research, either as part of a master’s program or carried out by inservice teachers is minimal and somewhat ambiguous. The current study aims to answer the following research questions:

Show moreIn line with changing views on childhood, citizenship and educational goals, the last decades have shown a growing interest in student participation. More and more, it became felt desirable and necessary for student voices to be heard and really listened to and for students to be consulted on educational matters that affect them. The attention for these issues led to a increasing number of participatory initiatives and also has evolved into a plea for developing and applying more intensive and higher level forms of student participation, for instance a form in which students act as co-researchers. By implication, a more equal position of teachers and students in educational decision-making is advocated. Furthermore, it is acknowledged that both students and teachers can benefit and learn from such an approach. However, participatory practices require teachers and schools to change, and often daily educational practices appear to have a stubborn character. In this article, the student participation form 'students as co-researchers' is explored on the basis of a case in The Netherlands: an action research project conducted by teams of teachers, students, and museum educators. First, the characteristics and the intensity of the student participation in this case are described along six dimensions of participation as distinguished by Kirby et al. (2003). Next, the implications for the learning and professional development of teachers who participated in the project are explored. The four domains of the teacher professional growth model as distinguished by Clarke and Hollingsworth (2002) serve as the structuring framework. Show less
