Show moreIn an attempt to overcome some of the shortcomings of the theory of the postcolonial state, this study analyses the relationship between the 'revolutionary' leadership in Ghana and the 'revolutionary' mass organizations established by the new regime, the Defence Committees. The contradictions between the leadership and the Defence Committees gave rise to serious conflicts, also within the leadership. One faction of the ruling petty bourgeoisie' attempted to 'commit suicide' and mobilize the Defence Committees for the ultimate establishment of a workers' hegemony within Ghanaian society. Its attempts were frustrated and finally obstructed by another faction that sought to control the Defence Committees for the sake of 'national development', and to preserve its hold over the state and its own class interests. Show moreThe recent introduction of capitalist rice farming in the Gbedembilisi Valley (a river valley located in the south-east of the Builsa Traditional Area in the upper Region of Ghana) has given rise to the emergence of a small class of mainly stranger and partly absentee farmers within local peasant communities. This class of capitalist rice farmers has been highly dependent on local peasant communities for the allocation of land and for the supply of labor. This article shows that land allocation has resulted in: 1) various abuses of "customary" land law by both local chiefs and stranger farmers; 2) a protracted conflict between. local peasant communities, on the one hand, and stranger farmers and the state, on the other, about control over Builsa lands, the so-called Gbedembilisi Valley Dispute; and 3) and attempt by the Builsa Traditional Council to effect changes in the "customary" land law in order to "regulate" land allocation to capitalist rice farmers. Show moreThis medium-sized irrigation project was one of the schemes undertaken to bring about structural changes in the colonial export economy and to bridge regional inequalities. The paper aims to demonstrate first why producers of use-values and migrant labourers should be transformed into producers of commodities and how this transformation was achieved. It then tries to explain the reasons for the consequent various changes in the organisation of cash crop production in the project and to analyse the various ways peasants' labour is controlled and exploited. Finally it shows reaction and action of peasants on the loss of control over the means of production, the production process and the terms of exchange. Show less

Show moreA study based on fieldwork undertaken in 1975. Conclusion: Whilst an incipient working-class consiousness exists amongst the Ashanti Goldfield Corporation miners, the cumulative effect of the co-existence of various modes of production, the constant confrontation of miners with the value systems and ideologies of the dominant classes in society, and the absence of a radical or revolutionary leadership and ideology makes gradual and sustained mobilization of class consciousness exceptionally difficult and thereby limits working-class actions, collective action is likely to continue to take the form of local wildcat strikes, because economic actions often arise out of a deeply-felt resentment against the present inegalitarian status quo. Such action, however, can be broken by management through dismissals, and by the State through a show of force Show less
