Are welfare states still effective in reducing income inequality? We use recent microdata from the Luxembourg Income Study to examine redistribution from transfers and income taxes, and the several underlying social programs that drive the changes in 31 countries. On average, we find that social transfers and income taxes reduce the Gini by 31%. In most countries, pensions are a dominant factor. After performing a number of sensitivity analyses, we conclude that the redistributive impact of the welfare state is still substantial. Show less

Show moreIn zowel Leiden als Den Haag verzorgt de afdeling Economie - van de Leidse rechtenfaculteit - onderwijs voor ruim 1700 studenten. In totaal verzorgt de afdeling Economie 19 vakken bij de opleidingen Bestuurskunde. De bacheloropleiding waar de afdeling aan meewerkt bestaat uit twee tracks: Beleid, Bestuur en Organisatie (BBO) en Economie, Bestuur en Management (EBM). De track Beleid, Bestuur en Organisatie is een klassieke opleiding bestuurskunde, waarin de economen enkele vakken verzorgen, bijvoorbeeld op het terrein van overheidsfinanciën. De andere - populaire - track is Economie, Bestuur en Management. Deze track is een uniek samenwerkingsverband tussen het Instituut Bestuurskunde en de Afdeling Economie. Studenten die deze track volgen, krijgen zowel bestuurskundige als economische vakken. Show less
