Show moreThis book compares the process of postwar welfare state development in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom by analyzing the role of the labor union movement in the creation and expansion of social policies. It argues for a fundamental reinterpretation of the role of organized labor in welfare state development. It emphasizes that welfare state development is mainly about redistribution of income and risk within the worker category. Based on this premises, the book has set out to understand under what circumstances unions are willing to redistribute income and risk among workers. It argues that this depends foremost on their organizational blueprint. Show less

Show moreTraditional histories of Early Modern trade and trade networks have ignored a potent truth -- that trade, and the networks constructed for the pursuit of this trade, were far more fluid and far more open to merchants of varying backgrounds than has heretofore been admitted. It is this idea that undergirds this work. This study shows that economic links between networks comprised of a multiplicity of ethnicities, backgrounds, and/or religions were mutually beneficial and often long-lasting by delving deeply into the networks employed by three Sephardic merchants in Amsterdam between 1595 and 1640 – Manoel Rodrigues Vega, Manoel Carvalho, and Bento Osorio. Show moreThe history of American slave family life has been circumscribed by two shortcomings. First, historians have long disagreed over the extent of slave agency in the development of slave families. Second, historians have tended to overemphasize the experiences of enslaved people in the cotton South, and rarely studied slave families from a comparative perspective. This study addresses both of these issues by examaning, from a comparative perspective, the boundaries and opportunities for slave family life in three distinct agricultural regions of the American South: Fairfax County, Virginia; Georgetown District, South Carolina; and St. James Parish, Louisiana.
