Show moreThis dissertation examines the educational positions of children of immigrants in the Netherlands from 1980 to 2020. In particular, the influence of migration background and socioeconomic factors on educational positions is studied. Findings reveal substantial progress in education for migrant children overall, especially among the second generation, younger cohorts, and girls with a migrant background, indicating promising upward mobility within the education system for many of these children. The family environment impacts educational outcomes, with socioeconomic background playing a crucial role. Higher parental incomes correlate with higher education levels for children in both the short and long term. Additionally, the living environment affects outcomes such as school dropout rates, especially among boys from migrant backgrounds in larger cities. They are more prone to leaving education prematurely than their female or non-migrant peers. Despite institutional barriers and discrimination within the education system, these children demonstrate an upward trend in education, highlighting the need for further research incorporating discrimination as a factor. Show less

Show less

Show moreDementia is a progressive, life-limiting disease. A palliative approach to care, that focuses on the quality of life of people with dementia and their relatives, is therefore indicated. Advance care planning is core to palliative care. Relatives play a major role in this, because people with dementia often become unable to indicate their preferences for future care. Palliative dementia care is still sub optimally implemented, however. Nursing home staff and relatives of people with dementia need information about dementia and palliative care to ensure it is optimally implemented. Also, ongoing communication between everyone involved in the care of a person with dementia is required, including discussions about future care needs. This facilitates a palliative care approach in dementia. These conclusions result from a survey among elderly care physicians, a systematic review, care plan data in nursing homes and an intervention study in two nursing homes: the mySupport study. It appears that relatives want timely information about the end of life with dementia. That way they can prepare. Although physicians are usually the ones who educate relatives, nursing staff often have a stronger relationship with relatives. After training, they can play an important role in providing information. Show less

Show moreThis thesis describes Saramaccan Maroon medicinal plant knowledge, practices and beliefs in relation to local health care, education and biocultural conservation. The Saramaccan ethno-medical system in the village Pikin Slee focused primarily on cure followed by health promotion, and disease prevention. People made a deliberated choice for traditional medicines, even though most health concerns could be treated in the village health center. Herbal bathing plays a significant role in providing local health care among Maroons. The geographical separation between the Saramaccan and Ndyuka Maroons have led to distinct plant use in their herbal bathing practices.Writing proper Saramaccan plant names and the translation of health issues from Saramaccan into Dutch is a challenge for pupils in Pikin Slee, indicating a gap between the official school curriculum (in Dutch), traditional knowledge and literacy in Saramaccan. The growing influence of Sranantongo interrupts the conservation of Saramaccan traditional ecological and cultural knowledge stored in plant names which are influenced by European, African and Indigenous languages. Central-African Bantu languages, especially Kikongo, contributed most to the names followed by West-African Kwa languages. As Saramaccan plant names store large amounts of traditional knowledge, they play an important role in the conservation of Saramaccan biocultural heritage. Show less

Show moreMost European Roma and Sinti achieve such low levels of education that they have basically no chance of moving up the social ladder. This study compares the educational positions of Roma and Sinti in the Netherlands and the Czech Republic, based on more than fifty biographical interviews with Roma and Sinti.Compared to the Netherlands, the poverty and social segregation among Czech Roma is more severe. Discrimination and racism against Czech Roma are virulent and ubiquitous. Yet, Roma and Sinti in the Netherlands have developed a similar suspicion of people outside their own circle and a similar negative attitude towards education, in response to their common history of deprivation, expulsion and even twice a genocide, in the eighteenth century and in the Second World War.Those Roma and Sinti who did receive an education were no longer seen as Roma or Sinti. This is why the highly educated did not function as role models until recently. Yet, this study shows there is a cautious turnaround. In both countries, the Roma and Sinti parents of the young generation of highly educated people, often low-educated themselves, had come to regard better education as the only way towards a better life. Show moreThe corpus of Æsopian fables books has been taught to French children and teenagers for centuries. Yet little analysis looks at the production in its entirety. Therefore, within this corpus, I evaluated the relationship between the text, the images, and the educational purpose of various fable authors using 252 visuals, published between 1500 and 2020. Sources include picture books, board games, sheet music, posters, school materials, and even application software. All have in common the aim of pursuing or promoting an educational use of the fables. My research focuses on the role that illustrated fables play in French education.Through a sociological approach that features the concept of médiation littéraire, book history, literary analysis, the study of the layout of the books and intermedial analysis, I conclude that Æsopian fables are used as a social link between generations of French people. They became essential across primary schools in the mid-19th century. Before that, they were mostly intended for socially privileged children whose families could afford a secondary education.Regardless of the century, the illustrations which accompany fables play a role in the text’s adoption across French schools: they participate in the transmission of the genre and other kinds of knowledge Show less

Show moreThe miracle of the hbs is about the early history of the hogere burgerschool (Higher Civic School) or HBS, a now-defunct Dutch secondary school type that achieved great fame. The research focuses on the establishment and functioning of the HBS in twelve smaller municipalities with populations of less than 10,000 people in the outer provinces of the Netherlands. Initially, the HBS was not really a success – its profile was unclear, the results of its few students were disappointing, and the cost for national and local government high. Still, those first few schools survived. The aim of the study is to find explanations for this paradox. The research shows that the miracle of the HBS is due to a combination of factors: well-timed legislation; a well-drafted law; two strong inducements in the legislation, namely money and curricular freedom; great enthusiasm in the region, particularly outside the traditional centre of the country; a degree of invulnerability to criticism from the opposition; and, above all, the self-confident actions of erudite and well-paid teachers committed to the new school and prepared to devote themselves fully to designing and improving its curriculum without making any concessions to the quality of the education. Show moreAs physician-scientists are able to connect research and practice, they are important to make advancements within medicine. Currently, the medical field is facing a physician-scientist shortage. Promoting student research engagement could be the solution. Following the need to identify how medical training could contribute to developing future physician-scientists, the general aim of this thesis was to provide insights into the impact early phases of medical training may have on cultivating physician-scientists, by elaborating on the role of motivation for research and extracurricular research programmes. By conducting quantitative and qualitative research, we showed that medical students are motivated for research at the start of medical school and that intrinsic motivation for research is related to actual research involvement. Furthermore, factors contributing to intrinsic motivation for research were identified: research self-efficacy beliefs, positive perceptions of research, curiosity, need for challenge, authentic research experiences, feelings of autonomy and relatedness, feelings of relevance or personal meaning, inspiring role models, and extracurricular research programme participation. Previous studies suggested that student research involvement is related to research involvement in professional practice. This thesis therefore emphasizes that first steps to cultivate physician-scientists could be made early on in medical school – ‘future physician-scientists: let’s catch them young!’ Show less

Show moreThis dissertation presents the results of the importance of creativity for ICT-students of Dutch universities of applied sciences (in Dutch: hogescholen), and the functioning of training courses that aim to promote creative abilities is highlighted. The ability to generate new and potentially useful ideas and problem-solving skills as a result of creative thinking is an important driver of human evolution. According to many, creativity is a very valued and sought-after accomplishment for today's society and for the future. In addition, computers, and everything related to them, have become an integral part of society. The ‘computer’ is one of the most important innovations in the history of mankind. Computers have radically changed our lives. It is even hardly conceivable to innovate without ICT. It is therefore logical that ICT-professionals play an extremely prominent role in innovation. This applies in particular to students taking a Bachelor of ICT-course in a Dutch University of Applied Sciences, because they are trained as leading IT-specialists.These phenomena led to two interrelated research questions: (i) ”Is creativity training important for ICT-students at Dutch hogescholen?”; and (ii): “Does creativity training work, as it is integrated in the curriculum of these ICT-students?” Show less

Show moreExternal PhD candidate Annette Jenowein investigated how women have changed the meaning of gender by claiming their place in traditionally male-dominated domains. Her research focuses on the life of Charlotte Jacobs: the first woman to establish herself as an independent pharmacist in the Dutch East Indies, a profession that was then regarded as a male profession. Since 1866, when girls were allowed to take the apprentice pharmacist's exam, a woman in the pharmacy was no longer a peculiarity. But when the first woman graduated as a pharmacist in 1881, (male) colleagues openly questioned whether a woman could also manage a busy pharmacy and establish business contacts just as well as a man could. Charlotte Jacobs, sister of Aletta Jacobs (1854-1929) - who was seven years younger and was a doctor and advocate for women's suffrage - managed to run her pharmacy in Batavia for nearly thirty years, all of which she managed exclusively with female assistants. Jenoweins research shows that the entry of women into male domains, such as science and higher professional work, has not only changed the meaning of gender, but has also radically changed the meaning of these institutions. After her death, Charlotte Jacobs earmarked a large part of her assets for a study fund for women and girls who wanted to study at a university but could not pay the costs themselves. This Charlotte Jacobs Study Fund still exists and flourishes and annually supports an average of thirty women and girls who want to study at a Dutch university. Show less

Show moreThis thesis focused on the evaluation of an eHealth intervention for cognitive stroke rehabilitation and the perspectives of different stakeholders on the uptake of eRehabilitation in general. The studies included in this thesis showed that there was no overall effect of an online brain training programme on cognitive functioning of patients with stroke. Only performances on cognitive function tests that were similar to the games included in the intervention improved, no near transfer effect was found. Moreover, usage of the training was suboptimal and not all of the patients were able to complete it. It would appear important to support stroke patients with CBCR training, since training is not well used by all patients. However, regarding patients’ ICT readiness, wishes and requirements it was also found that a relatively large amount of patients in rehabilitation wish to incorporate ICT in their rehabilitation treatment. In addition, developing tailored implementation strategies to implement eHealth in the bachelor curriculum of health professionals, based on the identified barriers and facilitators in this thesis is highly relevant to make sure that future health professionals are able to work with eHealth. Show moreThis dissertation is an ethnographic research of three groups of people from South Korea to China -- parents, students and educational agents -- focusing on their ‘greed’, expectation, anxiety, and dread regarding education. Examining this sheds light on the subjectivities of the people who are confronted with their structural positioning as being sojourners from South Korea and foreigners in China. The individual desire on education is induced by and reflects China’s national ambition in pursuit of educational internationalization and Korea’s compulsion to incorporate overseas nationals into its rhetoric of globalisation. Both nation-states confer political privileges on the children of overseas Korean nationals in their educational trajectories. As a result, individuals are empowered to creatively comply with, tactically appropriate, or, simply discard educational arrangements by the states. Paradoxically, they simultaneously encounter regulatory, socio-economic, and geographical constraints as they reside in China and make plans for further migration. This thesis demonstrates that ethnic solidarity is restrictive in helping Koreans obtain opportunities that they expect to have. Koreans are increasingly scattered depending on their social-economic statuses and set out to merge with non-ethnics. This trait offers a significant insight into the nuanced tendency of the Chinese immigration policy. Show less

Show moreThe objective of this socio-historical study is to contribute to a better and fuller insight in the development of Curaçao society in the twentieth century. The question that lies at the heart of this study was: What was the influence of the Catholic Church in the development of Curaçao society in the period in which this society was strongly in the process of industrialization and modernization and that subsequently made the transition to democracy, self-government and therewith to citizenship? A considerable part of this study is based on literature and archival research, conducted in both Curaçao and the Netherlands, supplemented with the analysis of existing oral history material and the execution of targeted additional interviews. These additional interviews were conducted for greater knowledge and to illustrate, substantiate or clarify a specific situation. The study focuses on the development of society and therein specifically on the position of the Catholic, predominantly Afro-Curaçaoan, population. Show less

Show moreNational large-scale assessments have demonstrated a decrease in Dutch primary school students' performance on multidigit multiplication and division problems (e.g., 56x23 and 544:34) in the past two decades. This performance decrease appears to be related to changes in students' use of mathematical strategies: the use of relatively accurate strategies for which calculations are written down has decreased, while the use of inaccurate mental strategies has increased. To gain more insight into these developments and how to possibly turn them around, factors that affect students' mathematical strategy use and performance were investigated. New applications of latent variable models to national large-scale assessment data were used to relate teachers' reports of their mathematics teaching to students' problem solving. Follow-up experiments were conducted at primary schools for a more controlled investigation of students' strategy choices and of how to influence those choices (and thereby, performance) favorably. It was found that teachers mainly influence students' choices between strategies with written work, and that they have less influence on choices for the inaccurate mental strategies (made more frequently by boys and weaker students). Extra instruction targeted at the latter was found to increase weaker students' choices for writing down calculations, and this improved students' performance. Show less

Show moreIndigenous peoples' rights have been on the international political agenda for over fifty years. Yet, very limited attention has been given to indigenous women. Among indigenous peoples, women are one of the most vulnerable groups, because they are subject to multiple discrimination: for being a woman, indigenous, and often, because of the stigma of poverty. The absence of attention for women's issues is due to a lack of awareness and knowledge regarding the role women play in society and in the development of communities, and it illustrates the subordinated position women continue to have in society in general. This research wants to contribute to the visibility of indigenous women. Therefore, it provides an overview of some of the challenges indigenous women are still facing, focusing on the case of Mexico. It analyzes the position of indigenous women in Mexican society, to identify some of the fields in which indigenous women's rights are still not guaranteed and therefore require more action. Special attention is given to the position of indigenous women in Mexican health care, political participation, media, and education. Show less

Show moreIn the first part an update of a guideline for the physiotherapy treatment of patients with hip and knee OA is described. Then a set of quality indicators for the physiotherapy management is developed to be used as an instrument to measure guideline adherence. Subsequently the effect of educational strategies to enhance their uptake by physiotherapists in daily clinical practice is investigated. An interactive approach with patient colaboration and following a proces of clinical reasoning has shown to be the most effective strategy. The second part describes the extent of the provision of physiotherapy before and after joint replacement surgery from the physiotherapists__ and patients__ perspective. Results showed a large variation in provided interventions before and after surgery, although evidence for physiotherapy before joint replacement surgery is lacking. This indicates that more research is necessary focussing on effectiveness for specific groups of patients. In addition it was concluded that the presence of severe back pain in THA and dizziness in THA and TKA, should maybe ascertained before surgery and if present be treated if possible in order to decrease the chance of unfavourable outcome, although the predictive value of dizziness should be confirmed in a study with a prospective design. Show less
