Show moreThe dialogical paradigm provides a theory of meaning alternative to the model-theoretical and proof-theoretical ones which are more widespread. From the dialogical point of view, meaning is given by use within argumentative debates which are designed as two-player games. In this work we present the fundamental notions of the paradigm through the study of various dialogical semantics. We also make some incursions in the metatheory of dialogical games, with among other things a stress on the connection between dialogues and tableaux.Three specificities of our account are: the homogeneous way to ensure finiteness of dialogues with the device of repetition ranks, an explicit formulation of game rules with emphasis on speech acts, and the significant role given to the perspective of extended forms (tree representations) in our analysis. As for results, we propose a new demonstration of soundness and completeness of the tableau method with respect to dialogical games. We also give the first analysis of the dialogical manifestation of the decidability (or not) of a logic as intimately related to the handling with repetition ranks of repetitive behaviours in games. Show less

Show moreThe study of the integration of areas peripheral to the main urban centres of the conquered lands to the Islamic sphere of authority in the 7th century poses great issues to historians because of the scarcity of sources available. The Egyptian countryside however beneficiates from a large body of documentary evidence composed of papyri in Greek, Coptic and Arabic in addition to archaeological data and local historiography. This study offers to explore the history of Middle-Egypt, precisely the region of Antinoe/Anṣinā and Hermopolis/Ašmūn/Ašmūnayn as it became part of the empire of the Medinan (642-659), Umayyad (659-750) and Abbasid caliphs (750-868). The very detailed documentation available for the region allows to investigate the immediate measures that were taken locally after the conquest to insure and installation of the conquerors and their sustenance. It also shows how cooperation with the local au thorities was working from the very first years of Islamic dominance. One of the examples of that is given by the office of the duke of the Thebaid in Antinoe, revealing over time how such position contributed to the formation of the Islamic administrative hierarchy during the Umayyad period. However, the city of Anṣinā progressively fades away from the available documentation from the 8th century on as Ašmūn/Ašmūnayn becomes the main administrative centre of the area indicating a shift in the administrative system completed by the 9th century Show less

Show moreHow did common people write in the late eighteenth century? Little is yet known on this topic, since our knowledge is mainly based on printed texts written by a small part of the (male) elite population. This dissertation __ written from a sociolinguistic point of view __ gives us new insights into late-eighteenth-century language use. For this purpose a large number of Dutch private letters has been used. These letters were captured by the English in times of warfare between the Dutch and the English and are still preserved at the National Archives in Kew (London). The research is based on a selection of approximately 400 letters, written between 1776 and 1784 by Dutch male and female letter writers from all social ranks. This study into late-eighteenth-century language variation can be regarded as a first broad exploration of this valuable material. Therefore various linguistic phenomena have been examined: forms of address, negation, reflexivity and reciprocity, schwa-apocope, deletion of final -n, diminutives and the genitive and alternative constructions. The case studies clearly establish more variety in eighteenth-century written language than previous studies suggested. Almost every linguistic feature under discussion appears to show social variation, and gender and social class, in particular, are influential factors. Show less

The research concerns private companies in which government bodies have the possibility to a dominant level of influence the management of these companies that provide services with public interests: the Government Undertaking. The position of the State or other government authorities as shareholder, the relation between different private companies with public interests and also the relationship between different layers of government within the institutional set-up of these companies are being discussed by examining Dutch case studies on Government Undertakings (Nederlandse Spoorwegen, Luchthaven Schiphol and TenneT) and a study on comparable legal entities in German, Belgian, French and English company law, The book makes recommendations for the institutional set-up of the Government Undertaking and recommends the establishment of a new legal form to specifically house Government Undertakings Show less

Show moreAs an artist I am fascinated by the phenomenon of place in relation to beginnings and final destinations. This study links up the concept of place with memory, with the idea of transience and the transition from life to death. My main research question addressed the following concern: how can I present my work in a way so that it both comprises a representation of place and emerges or exists as a place itself? As my research was geared toward places of meaning, I also aspired to create new places of meaning. My search for them involved a journey through time and space __ not just _ la recherche du temps perdu, but also _ la recherche du lieu perdu. My research expanded into various areas that are somewhat affiliated with art, namely archeology, architecture and (art)history. Through my photo works and the installation I created, I intend to share a visual story with the audience and find a way in which viewers of the work may appropriate the story and add to it by mobilizing their own perceptions. My reflections on the quality and characteristics of place took me to the classical houses found in Pompeii and the ancient tombs of Rome and Cerveteri. The connection between these spatial manifestations of life and death as two extremes is essential to me. My historical research made me aware that as an artist I am part of long tradition indeed. As such the artistic sightline cuts across the historical sightline in this work, to which I also added a more personal, autobiographical sightline as a third meaningful dimension Show less

In the first chapter, the author draws a critical review of modern research on this item. In the second chapter, he establishes a biography of Ibn Hazm studying the circumstances that influenced the author. In the third chapter he focuses on issues related to the history of the text of al-Fasl, its textual criticism, its internal structure and its sources. The pitiful state of the printed text clearly appears from the collation of the text of 19 printed editions with 15 manuscripts. These fifteen manuscripts form two groups. The manuscripts of the first group retain a first version of al-Fasl in which coexist two families. The manuscripts of the second group form a fully revised second version. Since this version of the book is the definitive state of the text, it is a priority to establish the text conveyed by these manuscripts. As an example of his method, the author provides a critical edition of the chapter of "the contradictions existing in the Pentateuch" according to its second, fully revised and final version. Show moreThe key questions posed in this dissertation are centred on the interaction between spectator and artwork. What happens between a spectator and an artwork? How do we experience ‘meaning’ in an artwork? How may the process of interpretation be understood and articulated? Key concepts of reception theory are extensively discussed, such as ‘the aesthetic object’ and ‘blank space’. To the extent that this is deemed necessary they are given a new denotation and a new theoretical context. Much attention is paid to the theory of German the art historian Wolfgang Kemp. Different notions of spectatorhood are put forward and critically analyzed. The research is based on an art critical practice of many years and on the personal experience of artworks. The research is focused on unravelling and problematising the theoretical terminology of the interaction between artwork and spectator, with the aim of building a new theoretical foundation for this terminology. Hermeneutics and phenomenology, especially the thinking of Hans-Georg Gadamer and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, play an important role in the construction of the argument. Different concepts of spectatorhood are extensively discussed. The dissertation proposes a new set of theoretical concepts to understand the interaction between artwork and spectator. The argument is sustained by concrete examples from contemporary art and art history. Show less

Show morePostcolonial migrants form the largest migrant groups in the Netherlands in the period 1945-2000. The leading question of this study was by whom, when and why discursive strategies were used in political and public debates on the inclusion or exclusion of postcolonial migrants. Which factors influenced the use of these strategies? Approximately 7.000 newspaper articles (mostly non-digitalized) were used, as were political debates, television broadcasts and novels. By the metaphors, arguments, terminology and words that were used in these debates, we can try to grapple with how these postcolonial migrant groups were perceived in the Netherlands. This influenced the government policies that were formulated. The actors that participated in the debates differed per group and period. Especially pressure groups and journalists were successful in changing or justifying policy. Postcolonial migrant groups are especially interesting in this sense as there were discussions on both their juridical and discursive citizenship. These discussions show that not only juridical citizenship is pivotal to admittance, but the discursive citizenship is equally, if not more, important. The second reason to study these groups is that it is also possible to branch out into premigratory influences on admittance, integration and policy making Show less

Show moreThis PhD thesis traces the development, success and meaning of images depicting scenes of temptations, witchcraft and hells in Dutch and Flemish seventeenth-century art. It singles out these images as an independent genre filling a niche in the market for genre paintings. By the beginning of the century these images had come to form a distinct artistic genre that ventured far beyond the mere imitation of Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Brueghel the Elder__ s models. When examining the role and meaning of such representations in the context of their place and time, it is important to refer to them with a specific name, rather than a merely descriptive one like __diableries__. The most significant term that emerges from contemporary Dutch sources, art literature, inventories and auction catalogues is __spoockerijen__ (literally: ghosts). It is worth noticing a remarkable difference in the terminology used in Southern and Northern Netherlands to refer to these images. In the north the word __spoockerijen__ was used as a generic term to designate images ranging from temptations to witchcraft and hell scenes, whereas in the south a linguistic distinction is made between __tentatien__, __tooverijen__ and __hellen__. This implies that northern viewers recognized the non-existent character of the figures as the common denominator of all these representations. Interestingly, Dutch and Flemish art reveals an iconographic exchange between such images and references to religion, mythology and literature are freely fused. As a result, various subgroups of the genre of __spoockerijen__, showing different manifestations of the devil, are seen merging. This process of blurring boundaries between formerly distinct categories of the genre was possible because they ceased to be linked with their former literary and Christian context. Instead, they increasingly became subjects which allowed the artist to freely express his imagination at the highest level, as they show just illusions and fake worlds. Show less
