Show morePeut-on ou non prouver Dieu? Cette question tire son origine du XI-ème siècle, et plus particulièrement de celui que l'on appelle le << père de la Scolastique>>, Anselme de Canterbury. Le monde a bien changé depuis Anselme. La philosophie n'est plus divine, elle n'est plus qu'humaine. Dieu n'est plus ni raison, ni fondement de la raison. Bien au contraire, seules les facultés humaines vérifiables semblent garantir la raison. Il n'y a plus de place dans notre société hyper moderne pour un Dieu que personne ne semble voir, et qui ne peut se prouver. La célèbre définition d'Anselme, baptisée par Emmanuel Kant, l'argument ontologique, dit que Dieu est 'datgene waarboven niets groter gedacht kan worden'. C'est une définition géniale s'exclame Hartshorne, philosophe américain mort en 2000. Ce dernier a redonné souffle, au coeur du XX-ème siècle, à la définition d'Anselme. A l'aide d'une démarche philosophique rigoureuse, faisant appel à la logique moderne tout autant qu'à la métaphysique, Hartshorne a offert à la définition de Dieu 'datgene waarboven niets groter gedacht kan worden' une seconde vie et un second souffle. Peut-on prouver Dieu? Non et heureusement mais il est possible de penser un 'datgene waarboven niets groter gedacht kan worden'. C'est un défi monumental à notre pensée limitée! Show less

Show moreIn dit promotieonderzoek is zijn de effecten van vetstapeling en ontstekingsreactie tijdens het proces van atherosclerose. We hebben aangetoond dat het ontstekingsremmende eiwit interleukine-9, een stof die door bepaalde immunologische cellen geproduceerd wordt, een remmende werking heeft op het ontstaan van atherosclerose in het algemeen en van vetstapeling in macrofagen in het bijzonder. Aan de andere kant blijkt uit mijn promotieonderzoek dat vetstapeling van macrofagen de gevoeligheid van deze cellen voor ontstekingen beïnvloedt. LPS is in staat om een zeer sterke ontstekingsreactie te stimuleren en om de expressie van verschillende genen die betrokken zijn bij vetstapeling te beïnvloeden. Door gebruik te maken van muizen die geen scavenger receptor BI (SR-BI) tot expressie brengen, hebben we aangetoond dat SR-BI beschermd tegen de door LPS gestimuleerde ontstekingsreactie. Tevens blijkt dat een dieet met een hoog cholesterol gehalte een grote invloed heeft op parenchymcellen in de lever. Voornamelijk FABP5 en vier nieuwe vetzuurbindende eiwitten lijken een belangrijke rol te spelen in de reactie van deze cellen op het dieet. Ook het ontstekingremmende interleukine 10, waarvan bekend is dat het atherosclerose kan remmen en een verlaging van cholesterol in het bloed kan veroorzaken, beïnvloedt vele genen betrokken bij vethuishouding in parenchymcellen van de lever. Show moreCeliac disease (CD) is a common disorder of the small intestine caused by intolerance to gluten, proteins found in wheat and related cereals. In this study two major questions were addressed: i) which specific properties of gluten contribute to its disease-inducing characteristics ii) how can gluten toxicity be avoided. We found that CD-related molecule HLA-DQ2 has several features that explain why it can specifically interact with a large array of distinct gluten peptides. We also observed that some of the gluten peptides are being recognized by gluten-specific T cells in quite an unusual way, requiring the presence of a proline at position p-1. Another interesting observation was that the disease-inducing properties of rye and barley could be explained by the cross-reaction of gluten-specific T cells with the homologous peptides from these cereals. Although genetic studies indicated that the gene for prolyl endopeptidase could be involved in the pathogenesis of CD we showed that most likely this gene does not play a role in the disease development. Finally, we demonstrated that prolyl endoprotease from Aspergillus niger could be an effective measure to detoxify gluten in vitro. Show less

Show moreThat art has some sort of relation to reality is an assumption underlying most of the past and the present discourse on and about art. The questions of what sort of relation, whether it is at all valid and specific (as opposed to science’s or philosophy’s relation to reality), however, are hardly ever addressed. In studying a relation between terms, one needs to be clear about the terms themselves: ‘Art’ is understood here in the sense of the notion that crystallized no earlier than the 18th century in Europe. That notion is, in its essential features, still valid today. ‘Reality’ tends to be understood as that what exists independently of us ‘out there’, but it can also be the inner world of feelings, perceptions and memories, which entirely depends on the individual. The former is best described by science whereas the latter is inaccessible for it. Then there is the reality of inter personal relations, like society, culture and language. The thesis examines art in relation to each of them, on the level of individual experience, on the level of social life, in historical perspective. Show moreThis thesis sheds light on the clinical utility of serum markers of gastric atrophy, pepsinogen and gastrin, in general practice in the Dutch province of Zeeland. The biomarkers were used in studies on atrophic corpus gastritis, as surrogate outcome of gastric cancer. Attention was paid to seroepidemiological, aetiological and diagnostic aspects. Results of the thesis: - The seroprevalence of atrophic corpus gastritis in Zeeland appears to be 3.4%, which is higher than in other parts of the country (reference cohort studies, respectively 2.4% and 1.6%). Show moreLe présent travail est consacré à la phraséologie de la langue tchétchène, qui est parmi les thèmes les plus récents et moins étudiés de la linguistique nakh. Le sous-groupe nakh des langues ibero-caucasiennes comprend le tchétchène, l’ingouche et le bacbitien, parmi lesquelles la langue tchétchène est la plus répandue. Selon les données du recensement de l’année 2002, la République Tchétchène compte 1.031.000 habitants tchétchènes parlant leur langue maternelle. Ce nombre n'inclut pas les centaines de milliers de réfugiés qui vivent dans les régions différentes de la Fédération Russe et dans d'autres pays. Cette thèse de doctorat comprend une introduction et 6 chapitres. À la fin du travail sont donnés la conclusion, la liste de la littérature utilisée des sources écrites avec les unités phraséologiques de la langue tchétchène, ainsi qu'un index alphabétique des unités phraséologiques utilisées (1.569 unités phraséologiques, provenant de 184 oeuvres de 78 auteurs et d'autres matières). Show moreThe thesis is based on a decade of research in Cameroon, with several rounds of interviews at all stages of the rattan production chain, from the forest to the consumer. One of the findings was that this chain is relatively short: few middlemen on the product flow producer-workshop-customer. Rattan is not produced on plantations but cut in relatively intact forests close to villages and then transported to town. It is transformed into furniture, utilities or artwork in very small workshops, with very simple tools. There is little innovation in design, hardly any marketing effort and virtually no export. Income from rattan and number of jobs created is modest, though the impact on some individuals is distinctly positive. This contrasts with the situation in The Philippines, where the rattan sector is well d eveloped and creates much employment and foreign exchange. In the Philippines, however, exploitation has been unsustainable, and the sector has to face serious shortages and problems related to import of unprocessed rattan. The ecological impact of rattan cutting in Cameroon is currently not alarming, due to the weaknesses of the sector, but care should be taken to prevent resource scarcity. Little evidence was found of the hypothesized contribution of this non-timber forest product to halt deforestation, both in Cameroon and in The Philippines. The thesis ends with recommendations on the sustainable development of the rattan sector. Show less

Show moreDe wetgever gaat er steeds meer toe over in regelgeving te verwijzen naar (technische) normalisatienormen die via zelfregulering zijn opgesteld. Deze zogeheten NEN-normen worden in Nederland vastgesteld en gepubliceerd door de Stichting Nederlandse Normalisatie-Instituut (NNI). Door de verwijzing in regelgeving naar private normalisatienormen vindt een koppeling plaats tussen zelfregulering en wetgeving. Er wordt, met andere woorden, een link gelegd tussen privaat- en publiekrecht. In dit boek is de publiekrechtelijke status van deze normalisatienormen onderzocht, om vervolgens vast te kunnen stellen of de (grond) wettelijke bekendmakingsvoorschriften op deze normen van toepassing zijn en of deze in de praktijk ook worden toegepast. De auteur meent dat dit eerste wél het geval is en het laatste niet. Daarnaast is onderzocht wat de auteursrechtelijke status is van de 'verwezen' normalisatienormen. Artikel 11 Auteurswet sluit namelijk onder meer wetten en verordeingen uit van auteursrecht. Dit onderzoek is van belang omdat het NNI het auteursrecht voorbehoudt op de NEN-normen, waarvoor tot nu toe hoge prijzen worden berekend. Een dergelijk onderzoek naar de status van 'verwezen' normalisatienormen is in Nederland - in tegenstelling tot in Duitsland - tot op heden uitgebleven. Show moreHuman schistosomiasis (bilharzia) is one of the major parasitic diseases in the world, affecting 200 million people predominantly in third world countries. In areas where the disease is highly prevalent it causes important health problems, and it also has socially-economic effects on the population. Schistosomiasis is caused by the presence of the blood-fluke Schistosoma in the blood-vessels of mammalian hosts. The current method for diagnosis of schistosomiasis in developing countries is the parasitological examination of urine and faeces for the presence of Schistosoma eggs. An alternative method which is now increasingly used is based on the detection of Schistosoma antigens in the circulatory system or the urine of the host. The gut of the parasite is an important source of these antigens since many gut-associated antigens are excreted into the circulation of the host following digestion of food (e.g. blood cells, proteins) by the parasite. Two major gut–associated antigens which have been thoroughly studied with regard to diagnostic detectability, are the circulating anodic antigen (CAA) and the circulating cathodic antigen (CCA). In this thesis, these two unique antigens are further analysed with respect to their biochemical carbohydrate structure, localization, in vitro and in vivo excretion and detection patterns, and their role in a number of host-parasite immune interactions (granulocytes, complement system).
