Show less

Show moreHow do videos, movies and documentaries dedicated to indigenous communities transform the media landscape of South Asia? Based on extensive original research, this book examines how in South Asia popular music videos, activist political clips, movies and documentaries about, by and for indigenous communities take on radically new significances. Media, Indigeneity and Nation in South Asia shows how in the portrayal of indigenous groups by both ‘insiders’ and ‘outsiders’ imaginations of indigeneity and nation become increasingly interlinked. Indigenous groups, typically marginal to the nation, are at the same time part of mainstream polities and cultures. Drawing on perspectives from media studies and visual anthropology, this book compares and contrasts the situation in South Asia with indigeneity globally. Show less

Show moreThis book contains material normally found in at least three separate volumes: research methodology, philosophy of science, and (simple) statistics. They are all compressed into one relatively small volume. All the basics you should know about carrying out scientific research and writing your Master Thesis about it, is presented in this book. The book is especially written for students of the ancient Languages and Cultures. The object is to make them acquainted with basic theory and methods used in social sciences. This should enable them to get more grasp on research that they will be carrying out for their Master Thesis. The author is acquainted with both research practice and the study of ancient Languages and Cultures, as he studied Egyptology after having experience as a scientific researcher in sociology and criminology. He found out that fellow students were not able to get the most out of their Master Thesis research simply because they were not sufficiently thought on the subject. Some students were displaying a slight fear of using mathematics too. That is the reason that this subject is very delicately handled in this publication and examples from their own study are used. The student is guided through the material in a relatively easy way. Although one chapter is devoted to the use of statistical software, this is done only for those who want to master this relatively complicated matter as well. In practice, it is not really necessary because a standard program like Excel allows use of the most basic statistical functions as well. Show less

Show moreIf doctors suspect that their child patient is being abused, are they obliged to observe their duty of medical confidentiality or not? Recently, several legislative and administrative choices have been made to combat child abuse. These focus on revealing confidential information despite the obligation to respect medical confidentiality. The paradigm seems to have shifted from remaining silent-unless to speaking-unless. This shift calls for a study on how the legislative and administrative choices for revealing information can be framed in the light of the existing and well-accepted exceptions to medical confidentiality, which depart from the principle that the doctor is silent-unless. This thesis offers an analysis of the most important norms for medical confidentiality and for its breach by doctors and their implications in the context of child abuse. Moreover, it provides an understanding of the role and added value of the duty of care in this respect. It changes the dogmatic view on the concept of medical confidentiality in case of child abuse. Show less

Show moreThe first of its kind, this volume collects more than seventy South African women’s voices, from 1652 until today. We share the joys and sorrows of these women through their entertaining, sometimes disturbing texts. A testament to a significant segment of the linguistic and cultural history of the country, they speak in Dutch, then in different varieties of Afrikaans. The printing press arrived late at the Cape, and when it finally did, it took another century before the first publications by women appeared. Initially their writing bore a strong biblical influence, but gradually, as women began to have access to better educational opportunities, they began to produce literature of world stature in Afrikaans. Through this literature, we can see women’s perspectives on the tumultuous history of South Africa from colonisation to democracy as it unfolded. Show less

Show moreThe People’s Republic of China began the 21st century with a new-and-improved public relations approach that was meant to counter anxieties about China’s role in the world while simultaneously showcasing the leadership’s policies to a domestic audience. Crucial to this communication strategy have been networked spectacles: elaborate mass event, designed to reconfigure organisations, ideas, and the relations between people. In Staging China, Florian Schneider analyses large-scale projects like the Beijing Olympics and Shanghai Expo to show how such spectacles became part of the ruling party’s governance toolkit under Hu Jintao’s leadership, and how their legacy informs politics and political communication in China to this day.
