The new and now unabridged translation of the original text captures the impact of Huizinga’s deep scholarship and powerful language. The translation is based on the Dutch edition of 1941 – the last edition Huizinga worked on. Show moreFour years of protracted negotiations and bitter warfare passed between the declaration of Indonesian independence on 17 August, 1945, and the official transfer of sovereignty on 27 December, 1949. Whereas the newly proclaimed Republic of Indonesia rejected the colonial regime and hence any attempt at ‘recolonization’ by the Dutch after the Japanese occupation (1942-1945), the Dutch framed their return to the archipelago as a mission to restore ‘order and peace’. Images of the Indonesian War. Many of these materials, alongside photographs and oral history collections, ended up in the collections of the KITLV and eventually the Leiden University Libraries. This trilingual (English, Dutch and Indonesian) catalogue accompanies a digital exhibition of some fifty unique items. The selection made demonstrates the sharply contrasting perspectives on the legitimacy of the Republic and Dutch colonialism, and also offers first-hand testimonies of a bitter war with a huge imbalance of casualties. Show moreWillem Bilderdijk (1756-1831) was de grootste dichter van zijn tijd, maar ook een dwarsdenker in eeuwig verzet tegen de tijdgeest, en een zonderlinge hypochonder, die tientallen jaren leefde met ‘de voet in ’t graf’, zoals hij het zelf uitdrukte. Het universele genie Bilderdijk was een van de laatste Europeanen die nog over alle kunsten en wetenschappen een deskundige mening kon geven. Dat deed hij dan ook graag, en dat werd hem lang niet altijd in dank afgenomen. Naast talloze felle tegenstanders kende Bilderdijk ook een groot aantal bewonderaars. Al tijdens zijn leven begonnen zij gedrukte publicaties, documenten, brieven en afbeeldingen van en over Bilderdijk te verzamelen. Ook een haarlok van de grote dichter, zijn dodenmasker of een gipsen afdruk van zijn schrijfhand werden gewilde verzamelobjecten. De collecties van de twee grootste verzamelaars kwamen uiteindelijk terecht bij de Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde te Leiden en bij de Vereniging ‘Het Bilderdijk-Museum’ te Amsterdam. In 2020 werden beide verzamelingen verenigd in de Universiteitsbibliotheek te Leiden, de stad die Bilderdijk zelf zag als ‘’t Eden der wareld’. Eenzelfde verbondenheid is er tussen Rembrandt en de Universiteit Leiden. Hij schreef zich daar op 20 mei 1620 in als student letteren en deed dat, zoals uit deze publicatie zal blijken, in februari 1622 nog eens. Die inschrijving en herinschrijving worden in de Universiteitsbibliotheek bewaard, samen met talloze andere bronnen over Rembrandts leven en werk. Bovendien bezit de bibliotheek tal van prenten en tekeningen van Rembrandt, en ook van zijn tijdgenoten. In Rembrandt en de Universiteit Leiden wordt een selectie uit de collecties van de Universiteit getoond en besproken – bronnen, documenten, etsen en tekeningen. Zo wordt een beeld geschetst van Rembrandts Leidse tijd, van zijn geboorte in 1606 tot aan zijn vertrek naar Amsterdam in 1631. Show less

Erasmus and Huizinga are its main characters, their books In Praise of Folly (1511) and Homo Ludens (1938) its main subject. It treats those books as contemporaries and asks what they still have to say to us. The main theme of both books is the contrast between two attitudes of life: the conviction that each subject has two or more sides as opposed to the certainty that there is always only one side to the matter. It is relativism versus essentialism, play versus seriousness. In these times of populism and fundamentalism the relationship between play and seriousness is more significant than ever. Erasmus and Huizinga conceived a compromise as brilliant as it was paradoxical: turn seriousness into play, play into seriousness. Their solution is the life blood of literature. Literature is always paradoxical, always ‘true’ and ‘not true’ at the same time, both reality and fiction. Ambiguity is its home territory. Literature is the best answer to the purity and peremptoriness of prophets. Show less

It emphasises relations between citizens, adds socio-legal insight, provides a ‘view from below,’ and thus leads to more realistic insights on how to build state institutions. The concept was introduced by Leiden University’s professor of Law and Governance in Developing countries Jan Michiel Otto, and can be considered a central pillar of his work. Against the backdrop of an ever-increasing interest in ‘legal certainty’ in policy-making and academia, friends and colleagues of Jan Michiel Otto engage with the concept provide a wide variety of examples of its relevance. Drawing on case material from all over the world, they show how real legal certainty can be understood in a bottom-up manner and how it is relevant for building state institutions. They also show how the concept can gain in relevance by taking into account actors other than the state. The reverse of these tablets offers space to send a self-written wish or personal thank you message to the enshrined deity or buddha. Their front usually has a pre-printed or hand-painted design that is indicative of the intended purpose. In this book hundreds of contemporary ema designs for health-related purposes are reproduced and placed into their religious and biomedical context. A final chapter explores why there are differences between these purposes and current epidemiological patterns. This is the first book in English on the long-standing tradition of ema. Show less

Through a reinvigoration of postcolonial poetics and reader reception, it may be possible to shift our concerns away from the topic- and agenda- based discussions that have dominated the field to date and through which its politics have largely been understood. De Groot begon in 1594 als elfjarige jongen aan zijn studie aan de universiteit van Leiden en verliet de universiteit in 1598. Later werd hij als politicus en geleerde een van de bekendste Nederlanders uit de Gouden Eeuw. Heden ten dage wordt hij beschouwd als een grondlegger van het huidige systeem van internationaal recht, en om die reden zelfs als een van de belangrijkste intellectuelen uit de Europese geschiedenis. De sfeervolle wandeling gaat langs de locaties waar hij woonde en studeerde, en geeft en passant een beeld van de stad, van personen met wie hij te maken had, en van het functioneren van de Leidse universiteit. Die universiteit (opgericht in 1575) had zich als centrum van vernieuwend wetenschappelijk onderzoek toen reeds een internationale reputatie verworven.|This walking tour follows the locations of Hugo Grotius’ (1583-1645) undergraduate years in Leiden. Grotius matriculated at Leiden in 1594 when he was 11 years of age, and left the university in 1598. Later, as a politician and as a scholar, he became one most well-known Dutchmen from the Golden Age. Nowadays he is regarded as one of the principal founders of the current system of international law, and for that reason as one of the foremost intellectuals from European history. The scenic tour shows the places where he lived and studied, and gives an impression of the town, of some of the people around him and the workings of Leiden university at that time. In this book Graham Fuller addresses the character of these shifts and how they will shape the future of this tumultuous region as well as the role of major outside powers. Fuller firstly focuses on Shari’a law and its appropriate role, if any, in the politics and governance of the Muslim world, thereby further exploring why identity may be the most important factor in examining Middle East politics today. Next he addresses the current Shi’ite-Sunni conflict, not simply by scrutinizing the essentially theological approach found in most Western analysis but also through better understanding the many more extra-religious factors behind the scenes. Finally the author claims that the appearance of ISIS has stretched the perennial phenomenon of Political Islam to the extreme.
