Show moreConditional cash transfers have become the tool of choice in poverty reduction throughout the global South, granting women significant access to social protection. Yet, their inclusion has not necessarily resulted in more equal gender outcomes in employment. This paper addresses the question: to what extent has targeted social protection supported women in creating a more level playing field in the labour market? Two cities in the south of Ecuador form the context of new empirical evidence gathered to study the Bono de Desarrollo Humano programme (Ecuador) used to explore narratives of dependence associated to the provision of conditional cash transfers in a context marked by deep-rooted gender inequalities. The paper argues that the essentialist views of women’s capacities that underpin conditional cash transfer hinder their intended transformative impact, failing to introduce changes that would otherwise permit women to take full-time secure employment or move towards guaranteeing their social rights. Show moreThe conditional cash transfer programme Bono de Desarrollo Humano in Ecuador has allowed the increase in coverage of the social protection system to families in a situation of poverty, drawing attention to care activities for human capital for- mation. Although women have gained more visibility and have been included in a significant way under this scheme, their inclusion has not resulted in a ruptu- re of traditional gender roles in the household and society. In what ways can we re-imagine non-contributory social protection to reduce gender gaps and include women in a meaningful and transformative way? This article addresses this question by means of an institutional discussion of the hindrances of the current de- sign and invites a consideration of alternatives aimed at framing a new politics of distribution guided by a right-based rationale and rupture of the normative elements that confine women to the care of the household.El programa de transferencias monetarias condicionadas Bono de Desarrollo Humano en Ecuador ha permitido extender la cobertura del sistema de protec- ción social a familias en situación de pobreza, dando relevancia a las labores de cuidado en la construcción de capital humano. A pesar de que las mujeres han ganado mayor visibilidad y han sido incluidas de manera significativa bajo es- te esquema, su inserción no ha generado rupturas con asignaciones tradiciona- les de género dentro del hogar y la sociedad. ¿De qué manera puede reimaginar- se la protección social no contributiva para reducir las brechas de género e incluir de manera significativa y transformativa a las mujeres? Show moreIn the previous century and millennium, I have been working on a good deal of facsimiles of Bon Manuscripts from Dolanji (mostly from the PL480 publications), together with several bonpo Geshes and monks. Many of the publications were reproductions of manuscripts from the library bSam gling Monastery in Dol po, Nepal, on loan in Dolanji (some made it back to Nepal, some apparently didn{\textquoteright}t). The exact possible earlier migratory routes and provenance of the original manuscripts is yet to be established clearly and comprehensively.While working on these manuscripts, I couldn{\textquoteright}t help but notice, in my peripheral vision, that there seemed to be system and regularity to the ubiquitous idiosyncrasies in orthography and to the system of abbreviation used in these manuscripts. Occasionally, I also started recognising writing styles and even personal hands. Many of these particularities seemed to relate to local conventions, as I was also advised by some of my erudite informants.* While I took note of some of the major characteristics, I felt that these apparent orthographic peculiarities deserved to be looked into more systematically: this workshop may be a good opportunity to do so.This paper is thus intended as a first and indeed very modest contribution toward a definition of local orthographic styles of Bon manuscripts, based on the digitized files available in my research archive (and on reproductions of the originals). I shall to report on discernible patterns and regularities.* I have discussed some of these typical orthographical features and hands with one of my informants, Lopon Trinley Nyima Rinpoche. He appeared able to identify some of the hands and the couleur locale, in fact with some measure of confidence. Show less

Show moreHet Zuid-Afrikaanseerfgoedlandschap dekoloniseren?Een dialogische benadering tenopzichte van erfgoedbewaring en immaterieel cultureel erfgoed in Stellenbosch. Erfgoed wordt in de multiculturele ‘rainbownation’ Zuid-Afrika benaderd als een middel om de verschillende culturen engemeenschappen te verbinden en te verzoenen. Het erfgoedlandschap wordt vanwegevele jaren van blanke onderdrukking echter nog steeds gedomineerd doormaterieel, koloniaal erfgoed, bijvoorbeeld in de vorm van monumentale kolonialegebouwen en standbeelden van koloniale heersers. Maar sinds de democratische omwentelingin 1994 is de nadruk vooral komen te liggen op het behoud van immaterieelcultureel erfgoed van de voorheen gemarginaliseerde gemeenschappen. Deze nieuwefocus vraagt ook om een nieuwe aanpakvan erfgoedmanagement, bijvoorbeeld door de actieve participatie van lokale gemeenschappenin het identificeren en beschermen van hun erfgoed. Door middel van eenzogenaamde ‘dialogische benadering’ van erfgoedmanagement, oftewel een aanpak gekarakteriseerddoor inspraak en overleg tussen erfgoedprofessionals en lokale belanghebbenden,hoopt Zuid-Afrika zijn erfgoedlandschap drastisch te moderniseren en tedemocratiseren zodat het een ware bespiegeling wordt van de postkolonialesituatie. Critici vragen zich echter af in hoeverre dit beleid werkelijk heeftgeleid tot een inclusieve en democratische erfgoedsector. En in hoeverrebetekent deze focusverandering werkelijk een doorbraak in het klassieke denkenover erfgoed, i.e. oud materieel/monumentaal erfgoed (Europees) versusimmaterieel jong erfgoed (Afrikaans) en dus een dekolonisatie van heterfgoedlandschap? Enkele concrete voorbeelden van erfgoedprojecten inStellenbosch zoals het Solms-Delta Cape Music project en het Cloetesvillemondelinge geschiedenis tour project illustreren juist de effectiviteit en hetbaanbrekende van de ‘dialogische aanpak’. In deze stad, gedomineerd doorkoloniaal monumentaal erfgoed, heeft de ‘dialogische aanpak’ niet alleen geleidtot het zichtbaarder maken en beschermen van immaterieel erfgoed van voorheengemarginaliseerde gemeenschappen zoals de zogenaamde ‘Kaapse kleurlingen’, maarhet betekende ook een economische en sociale ondersteuning van dezegemeenschap. De veronderstelde inherente scheiding tussen materieel enimmaterieel erfgoed bleek in de praktijk minder duidelijk aanwezig. Juist desamenhang tussen het materiële en het immateriële wordt veelal benadrukt,bijvoorbeeld door het koloniaal monumentale als platform of theater tebenaderen waar bepaalde herinneringen en rituelen zich hebben ontwikkeld enworden (her)beleefd. Op deze manier is het erfgoedlandschap van Stellenboschniet alleen kleurrijker geworden, maar ook meer dimensionaal. Show less
