Show moreSchistosomiasis (bilharzia) is one of the major parasitic infections in tropical areas. It is caused by blood-dwelling flukes, residing in the mesenteric and pelvic veins of the human host. Over 200 million individuals are estimated to be infected with these worms, while at least 700 million people are at risk. The conventional method to diagnose this disease is by the demonstration of parasite eggs in faecal or urine specimens. However, this technique has several disadvantages, a.o. infections with low worm burden can be easily missed, and due to a high day-to-day fluctuation in egg counts, repeated examinations are needed to estimate the intensity of infection. Alternatively, schistosomiasis can be diagnosed by the detection of host antibodies directed against schistosome antigens. This technique has shown to be highly sensitive and specific, but is not able to differentiate between active and past infection, or to give information about intensity of infection Show less

Show moreRadicals produced by illumination or ionizing radiation are often produced in pairs, which quickly decay by recombination or by diffusion and subsequent reactions. For maximizing the yield of products, and for facilitating the study of reaction pathways, it is desirable to minimize the probability of radical pair recombination. We present a way of controlling the radical pair lifetime through the application of a pulse of resonant microwaves in the presence of a magnetic field. Herewith, two radical pair triplet states are coherently populated, from which the pair cannot recombine directly to the singlet ground state because of spin conservation. We illustrate the method with a photosynthetic photochemical reaction, where we have achieved an increase in the radical pair lifetime of up to two orders of magnitude. Show less

Show moreNominal Zn1-xMnxAl2O4 (0 less than or equal to x < 1) solid solutions have been prepared from nitrates hi air at 1423 K. MnAl2O4 was prepared in a flow of 5% H-2/N-2 at 1273 K. All the oxides exhibit the spinel structure with an almost linear variation of the lattice constant with x (a = 0.80946 + 0.01182x + 0.00497x(2) [nm]). With the exception of ZnAl2O4, upon preparation the samples eliminate 0.17x of ct-alumina, which is compensated by oxidation of some manganese to Mn3+. For charge balance the average valence of Mn should then be 2.11. However, chemical analysis of the sample with x = 0.5 shows that there is further oxidation up Mn-2.82+, which implies that cation vacancies phi must be present in the lattice. The above-mentioned chemical analysis, combined with an analysis of the line intensities of the X-ray pattern (Rietveld method, X-ray pattern simulation) and MAS-NMR results (which rule out the presence of Al3+ in tetrahedral positions), leads to the formula (Zn(0.53)(2+)Mn(0.09)(2+)Mn(0.31)(3+)phi 0.07)[Mn(0.10)(3+)Al(1.84)(3+)phi(0.05)]O-4, where parentheses and square brackets denote tetrahedral and octahedral sites, respectively. Intensity analysis combined with X-ray pattern simulations (without chemical analysis) proves that in all the samples [Mn3+] = 0.17x +/- 0.01. Assuming that the same oxidation level of Mn exists in all the series, the general formula of the studied solutions should be close to (Zn(1-x)(2+)Mn(0.20x)(2+)Mn(0.63)(3+)phi(0.17x))[Mn(0.17x)(3+)Al(2-0.34)(3+)phi(0.17x)]O-4. Algemeen wordt verondersteld dat deze gericht zijn op het bevorderen van lokale democratie en 'civil society', als tegenwicht van het grootschalige, inefficiënte staatsbestuur dat volgens velen de bestuursinrichting voor 1989 kenmerkte. Bij nadere beschouwing blijken de hervormingen reeds midden jaren '80 te zijn aangevangen, meer op partij-politieke dan 'civil society' argumenten te berusten, en ook lang niet altijd te leiden tot een grotere effectiviteit, efficiency, en 'civil society'. Daartoe wordt een vereniging uitgekozen om de organisatie van de LBd op zich te nemen en dit jaar is de eer ten deel gevallen aan Studievereniging Technische Bestuurskunde Curius te Delft.
