Show moreLocal modulation of macrophage cholesterol metabolism in the arterial wall and systemic regulation of lipoprotein metabolism (LDL-lowering and/or HDL-raising) are both attractive targets for future drug design for the prevention of atherosclerosis. As described in this thesis, bone marrow transplantation can be considered a useful strategy to study the role of macrophage-expressing genes and gene products in lipoprotein metabolism and atherogenesis, which may lead to the identification of target genes for pharmaceutical interventions.
