Show moreBackground and objectives The effect of sex on longitudinal health-related quality of life remains unknown in CKD. Here we assess differences in the sex-specific evolution of health-related quality of life in older men and women with advanced CKD.Design, setting, participants, & measurements The European Quality Study on Treatment in Advanced Chronic Kidney Disease is a European observational prospective cohort study in referred patients with CKD and an incident eGFR < 20 ml/min per 1.73 m(2) who are >= 65 years of age not on dialysis. Health-related quality of life was measured using the 36-Item Short Form Survey at 3- to 6-month intervals between April 2012 and September 2020, providing Physical Component Summary and Mental Component Summary scores. Trajectories were modeled by sex using linear mixed models, and sex differences in health-related quality-of-life slope were explored. Results We included 5345 health-related quality-of-life measurements in 1421 participants. At baseline, women had considerably lower mean Physical Component Summary (42) and Mental Component Summary (60) compared with men (Physical Component Summary: 55; Mental Component Summary: 69; P < 0.001). However, during follow-up, Physical Component Summary and Mental Component Summary scores declined approximately twice as fast in men (Physical Component Summary: 2.5 per year; 95% confidence interval, 1.8 to 3.1; Mental Component Summary: 2.7 per year; 95% confidence interval, 2.0 to 3.4) compared with in women (Physical Component Summary: 1.1 per year; 95% confidence interval, 0.1 to 2.0; Mental Component Summary: 1.6 per year; 95% confidence interval, 0.7 to 2.6). This difference was partly attenuated after adjusting for important covariates, notably eGFR decline. Higher serum phosphate, lower hemoglobin, and the presence of preexisting diabetes were associated with lower Physical Component Summary and Mental Component Summary scores in men but to a lesser extent in women. Conclusions Among older men and women with advanced CKD, women had lower health-related quality of life at baseline, but men experienced a more rapid decline in health-related quality of life over time. Show moreObjective. Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) in adult patients with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) has not been described so far. Therefore, we performed an explorative study to evaluate HRQoL in MCTD patients.Methods. MCTD patients fulfilling the Kahn criteria and participating in the prospective follow-up cohort for MCTD of the Leiden University Medical Center were included; and matched to systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients based on age, sex and disease duration. Data on disease characteristics and HRQoL (SF36 and EQ-5D) were collected annually. HRQoL was compared between MCTD and SSc patients at baseline. Factors associated with HRQoL in MCTD were identified using linear regression and change in HRQoL over 3 years using linear mixed models.Results. Thirty-four MCTD patients (121 visits) and 102 SSc patients (424 visits) were included. At baseline, MCTD patients presented with interstitial lung disease, cardiac involvement, synovitis and myositis more frequently compared to SSc patients, while use of immunosuppressive medication was less frequent. In both groups, mean SF36 scores were lower than in the general Dutch population. The SF36 subscore "general health perception" was impacted most in both groups (MCTD: 38.5 [SD:7.0], SSc: 39.9 [SD:8.9]). During follow-up, SF36 scores improved in MCTD patients, while EQ5DNL remained stable. No specific characteristics were identified that associated with baseline HRQoL or change in HRQol over time.Conclusion. Like in SSc, HRQoL in MCTD is significantly impaired, especially the general health perception of patients. Evaluation in larger prospective cohorts is needed to identify characteristics that impact HRQol most. Show less

Show moreObjectives: The ICEpop Capability Measure for Adults (ICECAP-A) assesses 5 capabilities (stability, attachment, autonomy, achievement, and enjoyment) that are important to one's quality of life and might be an important addition to generic health questionnaires currently used in economic evaluations. This study aimed to develop a Dutch tariff of the Dutch translation of the ICECAP-A. Methods: The methods used are similar to those used in the development of the UK tariff. A profile case best-worst scaling task was presented to 1002 participants from the general Dutch population. A scale-adjusted latent class analysis was performed to test for preferences of ICECAP-A capabilities and scale heterogeneity. Results: A 3-preference class 2-scale class model with worst choice as scale predictor was considered optimal and was used to calculate the resulting tariff. Results indicated that the capabilities stability, attachment, and enjoyment were considered more important aspects of quality of life than autonomy and achievement. Additionally, improving capabilities from low to moderate levels had a larger effect on quality of life than improving capabilities that were already at a higher level. Conclusions: The ICECAP-A tariffs found in this study could be used in economic evaluations of healthcare interventions in The Netherlands. Show less

Show moreBACKGROUND: Persons with disabilities are at risk for unemployment with negative long-term consequences.OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the process and outcomes of a novel vocational rehabilitation (VR) program based on the concept of mentorship.METHODS: Observational, retrospective study including unemployed young adults with acquired brain injury (ABI) taking part in a VR program including assessment, training, individual counselling and mentor support from volunteering professionals. Adherence to the program and work status were registered and at follow-up all patients were invited to complete a general questionnaire and EuroQol 5D.RESULTS: 49 patients started the program, with 41 completing the follow-up. Median age was 31 years and 19 were male. Median duration of the program was 8 months. At follow-up, 9 patients had acquired paid employment, 7 with the support of a mentor; 6 of whom were bothered by health problems at work. Nine patients left the program prematurely, with insufficient financial support for continuation being the primary reason for withdrawal (n = 6).CONCLUSIONS: A VR program including a mentor may be a promising program for patients who are unemployed at onset of ABI. Lack of financial support to complete the program and concurrent health problems were found to hamper the process and outcomes of the program, respectively. Show less

Show moreBackground: Caregivers of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients provide important support during the pre- and postoperative phase of deep brain stimulation (DBS). High levels of caregiver burden have been reported after DBS. However, a comparison between preoperative and postoperative burden and associated factors has been insufficiently studied. Objective: To investigate the influence of DBS on caregiver burden, and to identify the differential impact of patient-related factors on caregiver burden before and after DBS. Methods: Consecutive patients referred for DBS eligibility screening or during one-year follow-up assessments were included. Caregiver burden was measured with the short Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI-12). Inverse Probability Weighting (IPW) was used to compare caregiver burden between preoperative and postoperative assessments. Results: We included 47 patients (24 screening, 23 follow-up) (median age 65 years, 29.4% female sex). DBS did not impact caregiver burden (screening: median ZBI-12 9.5 (IQR 3.25, 16.75); follow-up median ZBI-12 6 (IQR 4, 14); IPW-coefficient 0.57 (95% CI -2.75, 3.89)). Worse caregiver burden during DBS screening was associated with worse patient-related scores on depressive symptoms, anxiety, QoL, and impulsiveness. Worse scores on depressive symptoms, anxiety, apathy, postural-instability-gait-disorder, and QoL were associated with worse caregiver burden at one-year follow-up. Conclusion: DBS appears not associated with changes in caregiver burden. Various symptoms are valued differently between screening and follow-up assessments in terms of caregiver burden. Early recognition of caregivers "at risk" may improve guidance of patient-caregiver dyads throughout the DBS process. Show less

To avoid major surgery, different radiotherapy techniques are being investigated. Studies on contact X-ray brachytherapy reveal promising oncological results. However, there are limited data on functional outcome and quality of life, which are highly important for older or inoperable patients. This study aims to report the oncological and functional outcome, quality of life, and patients' experiences of older or inoperable rectal cancer patients treated with contact X-ray brachytherapy to avoid major surgery. This study shows that contact X-ray brachytherapy can provide a good tumor response and is well tolerated, with minimal impact on functional outcome and quality of life. These data suggest contact X-ray brachytherapy can be considered an option for older or inoperable rectal cancer patients to avoid major rectal surgery. Total mesorectal excision for rectal cancer is a major operation associated with morbidity and mortality. For older or inoperable patients, alternatives are necessary. This prospective study evaluated the oncological and functional outcome and quality of life of older or inoperable rectal cancer patients treated with a contact X-ray brachytherapy boost to avoid major surgery. During follow-up, tumor response and toxicity on endoscopy were scored. Functional outcome and quality of life were assessed with self-administered questionnaires. Additionally, in-depth interviews regarding patients' experiences were conducted. Nineteen patients were included with a median age of 80 years (range 72-91); nine patients achieved a clinical complete response and in another four local control of the tumor was established. The 12 month organ-preservation rate, progression-free survival, and overall survival were 88%, 78%, and 100%, respectively. A transient decrease in quality of life and bowel function was observed at 3 months, which was generally restored at 6 months. In-depth interviews revealed that patients' experience was positive despite the side-effects shortly after treatment. In older or inoperable rectal cancer patients, contact X-ray brachytherapy can be considered an option to avoid total mesorectal excision. Contact X-ray brachytherapy is well-tolerated and can provide good tumor control. Show less

In this setting, patient values and priorities are central to personalised treatment decisions.Patients and methods: The prospective HOLISTIC study was conducted in the UK and the Netherlands assessing health-related quality of life in STS patients receiving palliative chemotherapy. Participants completed a questionnaire before starting chemotherapy, including attitudes towards quality of life (QoL) versus length of life (LoL), decisional control preferences, and decisional conflict. Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were used to evaluate associations between patient characteristics and preferences.Results: One hundred and thirty-seven patients with advanced STS participated (UK: n = 72, the Netherlands: n = 65). Median age was 62 (27-79) years. Preference for extended LoL (n = 66, 48%) was slightly more common than preference for QoL (n = 56, 41%); 12 patients (9%) valued LoL and QoL equally (missing: n = 3). Younger patients (age <40 years) prioritised LoL, whereas two-thirds of older patients (aged >= 65 years) felt that QoL was equally or more important than LoL (P = 0.020). Decisional conflict was most common in patients who prioritised QoL (P = 0.024). Most patients preferred an active (n = 45, 33%) or collaborative (n = 59, 44%) role in treatment decisions. Gender, performance status, and country were significantly associated with preferred role. Concordance between preferred and actual role in chemotherapy decision was high (n = 104, 76%).Conclusions: Heterogeneous priorities and preferences among advanced STS patients support personalised decisions about palliative treatment. Challenges with measuring HRQoL arise in the context of episodic conditions if patients are less likely-or even unable-to complete surveys when having disease symptoms. This article explored whether HRQoL measured at regular time intervals adequately reflects the HRQoL of people with epilepsy (PWE). Methods: Follow-up data from the Epilepsy Support Dog Evaluation study on the (cost-)effectiveness of seizure dogs were used in which HRQoL is measured in 25 PWE with the EQ-5D at baseline and every 3 months thereafter. Seizure count is recorded daily using a seizure diary. Regression models were employed to explore whether PWE were more likely to complete the HRQoL survey on a good day (ie, when seizures are absent or low in frequency compared with other days) and to provide an estimate of the impact of reporting HRQoL on a good day on EQ-5D utility scores. Results: A total of 111 HRQoL measurements were included in the analyses. Regression analyses indicated that the day of reporting HRQoL was associated with a lower seizure count (P,.05) and that a lower seizure count was associated with a higher EQ-5D utility score (P,.05). Conclusions: When HRQoL is measured at regular time intervals, PWE seem more likely to complete these surveys on good days. Consequently, HRQoL might be overestimated in this population. This could lead to underestimation of the effectiveness of treatment and to biased estimates of cost-effectiveness. Show less

Show morePurpose To investigate the impact of the OrCam MyEye 2.0 (OrCam) on the quality of life and rehabilitation needs in patients with advanced retinitis pigmentosa (RP) or cone-rod dystrophies (CRD). The OrCam is a wearable low-vision aid that converts visual information to auditive feedback (e.g. text-to-speech, barcode and facial recognition). Methods Patients with a clinical diagnosis of RP (n = 9, 45%) or CRD (n = 11; 55%), and a best-corrected visual acuity of <= 20/400 Snellen were invited to participate in this study. Questionnaires were administered at baseline and after 5.2 (standard deviation +/- 1.5) weeks, which included the Dutch version of the National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ), the Participation and Activity Inventory (PAI) and the OrCam Function Questionnaire (OFQ). Results Following OrCam testing, significant improvements were observed in the 'near activities' subscale of the NEI-VFQ (p < 0.001); the 'visual functioning' subscale of the re-engineered NEI-VFQ (p = 0.001); the 'reading' rehabilitation goal of the PAI (p = 0.005) and the overall score of the OFQ (p < 0.001). The observed changes in questionnaire scores did not differ between phenotypes. Advantages and limitations of the OrCam were reported by patients. Three patients (15%) continued rehabilitation with the OrCam after completion of this study. Conclusions The OrCam mainly improves reading domains in patients with advanced stages of RP or CRD. Further improvements in the OrCam are needed to address current limitations, which may enhance its utility for patients with RP or CRD. Show less

Show moreBackground: Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disease that affects the quality of life (QoL) of HD gene expansion carriers (HDGECs) and their partners. Although HD expertise centers have been emerging across Europe, there are still some important barriers to care provision for those affected by this rare disease, including transportation costs, geographic distance of centers, and availability/accessibility of these services in general. eHealth seems promising in overcoming these barriers, yet research on eHealth in HD is limited and fails to use telehealth services specifically designed to fit the perspectives and expectations of HDGECs and their families. In the European HD-eHelp study, we aim to capture the needs and wishes of HDGECs, partners of HDGECs, and health care providers (HCPs) in order to develop a multinational eHealth platform targeting QoL of both HDGECs and partners at home.Methods: We will employ a participatory user-centered design (UCD) approach, which focusses on an in-depth understanding of the end-users' needs and their contexts. Premanifest and manifest adult HDGECs (n = 76), partners of HDGECs (n = 76), and HCPs (n = 76) will be involved as end-users in all three phases of the research and design process: (1) Exploration and mapping of the end-users' needs, experiences and wishes; (2) Development of concepts in collaboration with end-users to ensure desirability; (3) Detailing of final prototype with quick review rounds by end-users to create a positive user-experience. This study will be conducted in the Netherlands, Germany, Czech Republic, Italy, and Ireland to develop and test a multilingual platform that is suitable in different healthcare systems and cultural contexts.Discussion: Following the principles of UCD, an innovative European eHealth platform will be developed that addresses the needs and wishes of HDGECs, partners and HCPs. This allows for high-quality, tailored care to be moved partially into the participants' home, thereby circumventing some barriers in current HD care provision. By actively involving end-users in all design decisions, the platform will be tailored to the end-users' unique requirements, which can be considered pivotal in eHealth services for a disease as complex and rare as HD. Methods All SSc patients from the Leiden SSc cohort were included; patients with disease duration <24 months were classified as incident cases. HRQoL was assessed prospectively on an annual basis using the EQ-5D and the SF36. To assess baseline associations between clinical characteristics and HRQoL, linear regressions were performed. To identify possible associations between SSc characteristics and HRQoL change over time, linear mixed models were performed in both incident and prevalent cases. Results In total, 492 SSc patients were included (n = 202 incident cases), with a median follow-up duration of 3.4 years. At baseline, presence of organ involvement was independently associated with a worse SF36 physical component score and lower EQ-5D score. Over time, gastrointestinal symptoms, Raynaud and digital ulcers were independently associated with deterioration of HRQoL in both incident and prevalent cases. In prevalent cases, pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) was associated with a decrease in HRQoL over time. Worse functioning as measured by six-min walking distance, mouth-opening, finger-to-palm distance and grip-strength contributed significantly to deterioration of HRQoL over time. Conclusion In SSc, key clinical burdens that contribute to worsening of HRQoL over time include digital ulcers, Raynaud and gastrointestinal involvement. Show moreAdrenal crisis is the most severe manifestation of adrenal insufficiency (AI), but AI can present with variable signs and symptoms of gradual severity. Despite current hormone replacement strategies, adrenal crisis is still one of the leading causes of mortality in AI patients. Although underlying factors explaining differences in interindividual susceptibility are not completely understood, several subgroups are particularly vulnerable to adrenal crises, such as patients with primary AI, and patients treated for Cushing's syndrome. Currently, the health care professional faces several challenges in the care for AI patients, including the lack of reliable biomarkers measuring tissue cortisol concentrations, absence of a universally used definition for adrenal crisis, and lack of clinical tools to identify individual patients at increased risk. Also from the patient's perspective, there are a number of steps to be taken in order to increase and evaluate self-management skills and, finally, improve health-related quality of life (HR-QoL). In this respect, the fact that inadequate handling of AI patients during stressful situations is a direct consequence of not remembering how to act due to severe weakness and cognitive dysfunction in the context of the adrenal crisis is quite underexposed. In this narrative review, we give an overview of different clinical aspects of adrenal crisis, and discuss challenges and unmet needs in the management of AI and the adrenal crisis from both the doctor's and patient's perspective. For the latter, we use original focus group data. Integration of doctor's and patient's perspectives is key for successful improvement of HR-QoL in patients with AI. Show less

Show moreIntroduction We conducted six cross-sectional nationwide questionnaire studies among all patients with hemophilia in the Netherlands from 1972 until 2019 to assess how health outcomes have changed, with a special focus on patients >50 years of age. Methods Data were collected on patient characteristics, treatment, (joint) bleeding, joint impairment, hospitalizations, human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis C infections, and general health status (RAND-36). Results In 2019, 1009 patients participated, of whom 48% had mild, 15% moderate, and 37% severe hemophilia. From 1972 to 2019, the use of prophylaxis among patients with severe hemophilia increased from 30% to 89%. Their median annual bleeding rate decreased from 25 to 2 bleeds. Patients with severe hemophilia aged <16 years reported joint impairment less often over time, but in those aged >40 years joint status did not improve. In 2019, 5% of all 1009 patients were positive for the human immunodeficiency virus. The proportion of patients with an active hepatitis C infection drastically decreased from 45% in 2001 to 2% in 2019 due to new anti-hepatitis C treatment options. Twenty-five percent had significant liver fibrosis even after successful therapy. Compared to the general male population, patients aged >50 years reported much lower scores on the RAND-36, especially on physical functioning. Discussion/Conclusion Our study shows that increased use of prophylactic treatment and effective hepatitis C treatment have improved joint health and nearly eradicated hepatitis C infection in patients with hemophilia in the Netherlands. However, patients still suffer from hemophilia-related complications, especially patients aged >50 years. Show less

Show morePURPOSE To investigate variability in older people's outcomes according to general practitioner (GP) and practice characteristics in New Zealand and the Netherlands.METHODS We used data from 2 primary care-based, cluster-randomized, controlled trials to separately fit mixed models of unplanned admission rates, functional ability, and quality of life (QOL) and examine variation according to GP- and practice-level characteristics after adjusting for participant-level characteristics. For the New Zealand sample (n = 3,755 aged 75+ years in 60 practices), we modeled 36-month unplanned admission rates, Nottingham Extended Activities of Daily Living (NEADL) scale, and QOL domain ratings from the brief version of the World Health Organization Quality of Life assessment tool. For the Netherlands sample (n = 3,141 aged 75+ years in 59 practices), we modeled 12-month unplanned admission rates, Groningen Activity Restriction Scale scores, and EuroQOL 5 dimensions (EQ-5D) summary index.RESULTS None of the GP or practice characteristics were significantly associated with rates of unplanned admissions in the New Zealand sample, but we found greater rates of admission in larger practices (incidence rate ratio [IRR], 1.45; 95% CI, 1.15-1.81) and practices staffed with a practice nurse (IRR, 1.74; 95% CI, 1.20-2.52) in the Netherlands sample. In both samples, differences were consistently small where there were significant associations with function (range, -0.26 to 0.19 NEADL points in the New Zealand sample; no associations in the Netherlands sample) and QOL (range, -1.64 to 0.97 QOL points in New Zealand; -0.01 EQ-5D points in the Netherlands).CONCLUSIONS In the absence of substantial differences in older people's function and QOL, it remains unclear whether intriguing GP- or practice-related variations in admission rates represent low- or high-quality practice. Show moreTo improve the quality and accuracy of the patient-reported outcome measures that assess health-related quality of life (HRQoL), guidelines have been developed to standardize the development and validation process. Considering the increasing importance of HRQoL questionnaires in research, we set out to review the literature and evaluate whether existing questionnaires developed for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) fulfill state-of-the-art requirements. The literature search was conducted in March 2019 and updated in September 2020. Seven databases were searched. No time limit was set for the search to include all available questionnaires. The inclusion criteria were original publications describing the development of disease-specific HRQoL questionnaires specific to DVT or PE in adults and available in English. The questionnaires were assessed to determine whether they fulfill the requirements in the latest guidelines. A total of 3826 references were identified. After the exclusion process, 15 papers were reviewed in full, of which 7 were included. Four questionnaires were developed for chronic venous disease, two were specific to DVT, and one was specific to PE. Most questionnaires we found in this review, fulfilled some but none fulfilled all recommendations in existing guidelines. Because the development of current available HRQoL questionnaires specific to DVT or PE do not fulfil all recommendations of existing guidelines, there is room for improvements within this field. Such improvements could likely enhance the quality associated with the use of these end points in clinical trials and practice. Show less

Show moreBACKGROUND: Few data are available on the long-term course and predictors of quality of life (QoL) following acute pulmonary embolism (PE).RESEARCH QUESTION: What are the kinetics and determinants of disease-specific and generic health-related QoL 3 and 12 months following an acute PE?STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The Follow-up after Acute Pulmonary Embolism (FOCUS) study prospectively followed up consecutive adult patients with objectively diagnosed PE. Patients were considered for study who completed the Pulmonary Embolism Quality of Life (PEmb-QoL) questionnaire at predefined visits 3 and 12 months following PE. The course of disease-specific QoL as assessed using the PEmb-QoL and the impact of baseline characteristics using multivariable mixed effects linear regression were studied; also assessed was the course of generic QoL as evaluated by using the EuroQoL Group 5-Dimension 5-Level utility index and the EuroQoL Visual Analog Scale.RESULTS: In 620 patients (44% women; median age, 62 years), overall disease-specific QoL improved from 3 to 12 months, with a decrease in the median PEmb-QoL score from 19.4% to 13.0% and a mean individual change of -4.3% (95% CI, -3.2 to -5.5). Female sex, cardiopulmonary disease, and higher BMI were associated with worse QoL at both 3 and 12 months. Over time, the association with BMI became weaker, whereas older age and previous VTE were associated with worsening QoL. Generic QoL also improved: the mean +/- SD EuroQoL Group 5-Dimension 5-Level utility index increased from 0.85 +/- 0.22 to 0.87 +/- 0.20 and the visual analog scale from 72.9 +/- 18.8 to 74.4 +/- 19.1.INTERPRETATION: In a large cohort of survivors of acute PE, the change of QoL was quantified between months 3 and 12 following diagnosis, and factors independently associated with lower QoL and slower recovery of QoL were identified. This information may facilitate the planning and interpretation of clinical trials assessing QoL and help guide patient management. Show less

Show moreObjective. Long-term outcome data in adults with childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) are limited. Here, we report the effects of cSLE on education, vocation, and employment in a large cohort of adults with cSLE.Methods. Patients were seen for a single study visit comprising a structured history and physical examination. Medical records were retrieved to supplement information obtained during the study visit. Education and employment status were assessed by questionnaires. I Iealth-related quality of life (HRQOL) was measured with the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36).Results. One hundred six patients with cSLE (93% female, 73% White), with a median disease duration of 20 years, completed the visit and questionnaires. Almost all patients stated that cSLE had influenced their education, but the level of completed education was similar to the general Dutch population. Half of the patients had adjusted their vocational choice due to the disease. Still, 44% of patients who had finished education did not have a paid job. Of the employed patients, 61% worked part time. Disease damage was equally prevalent in patients with and without paid employment. A high percentage of patients (51%) were declared work disabled, due to disease damage. Patients who did not have paid employment were often work disabled. Both had a negative effect on HRQOL.Conclusion. The effect of cSLE on academic achievements and employment is substantial, despite patients adjusting their educational and vocational choices. To optimize participation in the community, ongoing support is necessary, not only to help patients find suitable education and vocations but also to offer guidance regarding potential adjustments during their career. Show moreObjective Monitoring quality of life (QoL) in patients with cancer can provide insight into functional, psychological and social consequences associated with illness and its treatment. The primary objective of this study is to examine the influence of cultural factors on the communication between the patient and the health care provider and the perceived QoL in women with breast cancer in Japan and the Netherlands. Methods In Japanese and Dutch women with early breast cancer, the number, content and frequency of QoL-related issues discussed at the medical encounter were studied. Patients completed questionnaires regarding QoL and evaluation of communication with the CareNoteBook. Results The total number, frequency and content of QoL-related issues discussed differed between the two countries. Japanese women (n = 134) were significantly more reticent in discussing QoL-issues than the Dutch women (n = 70) (p < .001). Furthermore, Dutch patients perceived the CareNoteBook methodology significantly more positively than the Japanese patients (p < .001). Both groups supported the regular assessment via a CareNoteBook methodology. Conclusions Japanese women are more reluctant in expressing their problems with the illness, its treatment and patient-physician communication than Dutch women. Show less
