Naast onze jaarlijks terugkerende activiteiten is dit natuurlijk aanleiding tot enige extra activiteiten om dit feit te vieren. Ook deze Bestuurskundigen Berichten staat in het teken van de BIL-lustrumactiviteiten. Zie hiervoor het oranje katern dat is opgenomen in het midden van de BB. In dit artikel wordt door de verschillende bestuursleden een reis door de tijd gemaakt. Een reis langs de zaken die de BIL inmiddels bereikt heeft, met ook een uitstapje naar de toekomst om eens te zien wat die biedt voor onze vereniging. Show less

Show moreJongstleden 14 maart kwam onder andere burgemeester Havermans van Den Haag naar Leiden om in een forum van de Bll, te discussiëren over de regiovorming in de provincie Zuid-Holland. Aanleiding tot het forum was de toewijzing door het kabinet aan Rotterdam van de Stadsprovincie-status per 1 januari 1997. Havermans ging hierover in discussie met burgemeester Jansen van Krimpen a/d IJssel, eveneens vice-voorzitter van het Dagelijks Bestuur van de Stadsregio Rotterdam, en met mevrouw Van Grunsven, raadslid voor de Stadspartij Rotterdam. Deze partij werd vorig jaar voor de gemeenteraadsverkiezingen opgericht als protestpartij tegen de vorming van de Stadsregio Rotterdam. Het forum werd voorgezeten door de heer Neelen, docent Bestuurskunde in Leiden. Show less

Show moreWe report electron-nuclear double-resonance experiments on a single crystal of azurin at 95 GHz and electron-spin-echo envelope-modulation experiments on frozen solutions of azurin and of the H117G mutant at 9 GHz. The hyperfine and quadrupole tensors of the two remote nitrogens of the histidine ligands of copper are assigned and discussed. A third nucleus is found to contribute to the echo-modulation spectrum and this probably concerns an amide nitrogen of the peptide backbone. Show less

Fluorescence-microwave double-resonance experiments indicate that the dominant component originates from deep X-traps that consist of pairs of C-60 molecules. The minor component most likely derives from shallow monomolecular C-60 X-traps. Show less

Show moreHuman schistosomiasis (bilharzia) is one of the major parasitic diseases in the world, affecting 200 million people predominantly in third world countries. In areas where the disease is highly prevalent it causes important health problems, and it also has socially-economic effects on the population. Schistosomiasis is caused by the presence of the blood-fluke Schistosoma in the blood-vessels of mammalian hosts. The current method for diagnosis of schistosomiasis in developing countries is the parasitological examination of urine and faeces for the presence of Schistosoma eggs. An alternative method which is now increasingly used is based on the detection of Schistosoma antigens in the circulatory system or the urine of the host. The gut of the parasite is an important source of these antigens since many gut-associated antigens are excreted into the circulation of the host following digestion of food (e.g. blood cells, proteins) by the parasite. Two major gut–associated antigens which have been thoroughly studied with regard to diagnostic detectability, are the circulating anodic antigen (CAA) and the circulating cathodic antigen (CCA). In this thesis, these two unique antigens are further analysed with respect to their biochemical carbohydrate structure, localization, in vitro and in vivo excretion and detection patterns, and their role in a number of host-parasite immune interactions (granulocytes, complement system). Show moreThe geometries of the metal sites in cadmium-substituted azurins have been investigated by Cd-111m perturbed angular correlation (PAC), The study includes wild type azurin as well as Met(121) mutants of azurin, where methionine has been substituted by Ala, Asn, Asp, Gin, Glu, and Leu.The nuclear quadrupole interaction of wild type azurin analyzed in the angular overlap model is well described as coordination of His(46), His(117), and Cys(112) and cannot be described by coordination of Met(121) and/or Gly(45).For most of the mutants, there exist two coordination geometries of the cadmium ion, With the exception of the Gau and Asp mutants, one of the conformations is similar to the wild type conformation. The other coordination geometries are either best described by a coordinating water molecule close to the original methionine position or by coordination by the substituting amino acid, These experiments show that even though the methionine does not coordinate it plays an important role for the geometry of the metal site.The nuclear quadrupole interaction of stellacyanin was also measured, The value resembles the most prominent nuclear quadrupole interaction of the Met(121) --> Gin mutant of Alcaligenes denitrificans azurin, indicating that the structures of the two metal sites are similar.
