Show moreCase study of the position and religious activities of Manjak labour migrants from the administrative divisions of Calequisse and Cai¢ in the Cacheu region, who spend a substantial portion of their lives in urban centers in Senegal and France while maintaining close ritual and therapeutic ties with their area of origin. These ties involve a spectacular expenditure of time and foreign-earned money and bring out clearly the exploitative nature of local gerontocratic power, suggesting that these ritual ties have somehow become crucial in the articulation between capitalism and the local pre-capitalist modes of production. The central question tackled in this article is that of what exactly is being reproduced if the migrants' rituals are considered as cases of ideological reproduction. Show less

Show moreThe system of land use as practised in the mid-20th century was as follows: the fields, called the lands, were found outside the village at distances varying from 5 to 50 km. Every household maintained a temporary shelter at the lands for use during the agricultural season. Beyond the zone of fields were the grazing areas, the cattle posts. Now the large nucleated villages are undergoing some radical changes as a result of permanent migrations to the lands and the cattle posts. This study investigates, with special reference to the Kweneng district: 1) why some people are now settling parmanently at the lands instead of migrating seasonally between their fields and villages; 2) what the implications of their decision to live at the lands are for the rural economy and society, viz: the provision of social services and trading and chieftaincy and local government. Show more In diesem Artikel wird erörtert, auf welche Weise die kolonialräumliche Struktur des deutschen Schutzgebietes Togo zustande gekommen ist, weil die Entwicklungen in dieser Periode von Togos Geschichte (1884-1914) die räumliche Struktur Togos bis nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg bestimmt haben. Inbesondere wird ein wichtiges Element in dieser Struktur betrachtet: die Entwicklung der Infrastruktur. Die Entwicklung der Infrastruktur in Togo war mit einfer Vergrösserung der Exportproduktionsgebiete und einer Zunehmenden Marktintegration der Bevölkerung verbunden. Die Infrastrukturenentwicklung trug zum Ausbau oder Rückgang der alten Zentren und zur Entstehung neuer bei. Die Entwicklung der kolonialen räumlichen Struktur folgte in erster Linie den Hauptlinien der präkolonialen räumlichen Struktur. Nach einiger Zeit kam allmählich eine Umstrukturierung in Gang. Est ist deutlich, dass die modernen Transportmittel die kolonial-räumliche Umstrukturierung nicht veranlasst, wohl aber beschleunigt haben. Show less
