Show moreThis dissertation contributes to the literature on fathers’ parenting in families with young children using longitudinal, hormonal, and observational data. The results in Chapter 2 demonstrated that fathers’ hostile and harsh behaviors were related to children’s bullying behavior in elementary school, whereas the effect of the mothers’ behavior was less pronounced. In Chapter 3, the results suggested that fathers’ testosterone is beneficial for the quality of fathers’ parenting (i.e., sensitivity) when fathers’ testosterone reacts in the expected direction given the context of the father-child interaction (i.e., a decrease during a harmonious interaction and an increase during a challenging interaction). The results in Chapter 4 unexpectedly showed that fathers’ sensitivity was largely independent of varying gender-typed contexts. Chapter 5 provided evidence for a specific role of religious fathers, but not mothers, in communicating implicit gender messages and in turn the development of children’s gender attitudes. The most important take-away from this dissertation is that fathers cannot be ignored in child developmental and parenting research, and consequently also in child and family interventions. Show less

Show moreThis dissertation focuses on the overall study, as well as the nuances, of bullying behaviours among school-going youth in India. A systematic review of past literature from India is presented by synthesizing 37 empirical studies examining psychometric properties of the instruments adopted, methodological characteristics, sample size and procedures, and characteristics of bullying behaviour. Results show that bullying is widely spread, and certain factors, like caste and religion, and their association with bullying behaviours are typical to the Indian culture. This dissertation also examines if dimensions of psychopathy, namely callous-unemotional traits, narcissism, and impulsivity, can differentiate between, bullies, victims, and bully-victims in a longitudinal capacity. Using a multi-informant approach and multinomial logistic regression analyses, it was found that psychopathy dimensions taken together provide a better fit in predicting bullying than the independent psychopathic subscales. The dissertation further investigates the structure and context of the relationship between victimization and Body Mass Index through a transactional model. Key results of structural equation modeling analyses yielded mainly concurrent relations between BMI and victimization, emphasizing that results from western countries may not generalize to India. Finally, bullying behaviours among youth as a function of their socio-economic status (SES) in classroom and self-perceptions of minority status are examined using a moderated-mediation growth model. Results show classroom level SES plays a significant role in predicting victimization cross-sectionally, and is mediated through perceptions of self. However, in the long run, being part of a minority, and perceiving self as such, leads to decreased victimization among youth in India. Show less

Show moreObjective: Issues concerning harassment, bullying and discrimination are not unknown to medical specialties and are likely to be present in neurosurgery as well. The aim of this study was to estimate the extent to which neurosurgeons are faced with issues pertaining to this mistreatment. Methods: A survey consisting of fourteen questions was distributed among members of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS). The survey consisted of three parts: 1) demographics; 2) exposure to mistreatment; 3) experienced burnout symptoms.Results: In total 503 out of the 5665 approached CNS members filled in a survey (response rate 8.9 %). Respondents consisted for 85.9 % out of neurosurgeons and for 13.9 % out of residents. Overall, 61.4 % of the respondents was a victim of form of abusive behavior, while 47.9 % was a victim of at least one form of discrimination. Most reported sources of these mistreatments were other neurosurgeons or (family of) patients. Overall, 49.9 % of the respondents experienced burnout symptoms. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that female respondents had higher odds of being a victim of abuse (OR 2.5, 95 % CI 1.4 & ndash;4.6). Female respondents (OR 19.8, 95 % CI 8.9 & ndash;43.9) and ethnic minorities (OR 3.8, 95 % CI 2.3 & ndash;6.2) had higher odds of being a victim of discrimination. Furthermore, victims of abuse were at higher odds (OR 1.7, 95 % CI 1.1 & ndash;2.6) of having burnout symptoms. Conclusions: Mistreatment and experiencing burnout symptoms frequently occurs among neurosurgeons and residents. Show less

Show moreThis study provides a systematic review of literature from India on traditional bullying and victimization among school-going adolescents. A search of bibliographic electronic databases PsycINFO, MEDLINE, ERIC, Web of Science, and PubMed was performed in May 2020. Thirty-seven studies were included in the review. For each study included, the following specifics were examined: (a) methodological characteristics, (b) prevalence estimates of bullying behavior, (c) forms of bullying, (d) risk factors, and (e) consequences of bullying. Itwas found that bullying happens in India, and some risk factors for bullying and victimization in India are typical to the Indian context. In addition, bullying in India is associated with adverse consequences for both the aggressor and the victim. Many studies on bullying from India should be interpreted cautiously because of problems with data collection processes, instrumentation, and presentation of the findings. Cross-cultural comparisons for prevalence estimates, and longitudinal studies to examine the direction of possible influence between bullying and its correlates need to be conducted, tocater to the large adolescent population of India. Show moreThis thesis examined the extent to which relationships between emotional experiences and aggressive behaviours in adolescents are affected by culture. While existing studies often compare individuals from different countries to study cultural influences, this thesis also took a between-country approach by comparing Dutch and Malaysian adolescents; groups that reflect individualistic and collectivistic cultures, respectively. Also, the effect of individualistic and collectivistic values at an individual level was examined. First, the outcomes show that many relationships were culturally universal. Regardless of country or cultural orientation, adolescents who had more problems with anger control tended to be more aggressive; and those who experienced intense anger, fear and shame were more often bullied. Also, guilt was related to less aggressive behaviours in both Malaysian and Dutch samples. Yet, this thesis also revealed country/cultural specific relationships. Whereas shame was related to more aggression in Dutch adolescents, the opposite was true for Malaysian adolescents.Remarkably, this thesis found that the traditional classification between individualistic Western countries and collectivistic Eastern countries was not fully supported when cultural values were assessed at individual levels. For example, while higher levels of shame were related to less aggressive behaviours in individualistic-oriented adolescents, the opposite was true for collectivistic-oriented adolescents. Show less

Show moreIn the current study two meta-analyses are performed on longitudinal studies on peer victimization and self-esteem. The goal of these meta-analyses was to analyze whether a low self-esteem predicts future peer victimization, or whether peer victimization predicts future low self-esteem. The databases PsycINFO, MEDLINE, and ERIC were searched for relevant literature. Two authors independently went through the retrieved articles and found four doctoral dissertations and 14 peer reviewed articles eligible for inclusion in the meta-analysis. Articles were independently coded by two authors, with good interrater agreement. A total of 16,230 youth were included in the meta-analysis on peer victimization and self-esteem, and a total of 16,394 youth were included in the meta-analysis on self-esteem and peer victimization. Significant prospective pathways were found from peer victimization to self-esteem, and from self-esteem to peer victimization, which suggests that peer victimization and self-esteem are related in a transactional manner. Analyses suggested a negligible role of publication bias in the obtained results. Moderator analyses revealed that effect sizes were smaller for studies that used peer reports, and for studies that considered longer time-spans. The results of the current study suggest that peer victimization could have long lasting negative effects on self-esteem, but also point out that children may become victims because of low self-esteem. Show morePurpose - The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the effects of the Dutch "Skills for Life" programme on students' health behaviours, bullying behaviour and suicidal ideation.Design/methodology/approach - The effectiveness of the "Skills for Life" programme on health behaviour outcomes was evaluated at three points in time in using a cluster randomized controlled study design with a follow-up of 20 months. In total, 27 schools and 1,394 students were included.Findings - The programme was judged to be well implemented in just under half of cases. The outcome results for the experimental group (EG) compared with controls present a complex picture at the three different time points used for evaluation. There was a clearly positive effect on levels of alcohol consumption and a clearly negative effect on smoking across time. There was a mixed picture over time for suicide ideation and for bullying including sexual bullying (although the prevalence rates for bullying were low and thus results should be treated with caution). There were generally more positive impacts on students with lower educational levels including less suicidal ideation and less bullying.Research limitations/implications - Limitations were the dropping out of several schools during the study and the low level of fidelity of the curriculum. Social emotional learning (SEL) programs can be part of a health promoting school framework but should be more tailored to disadvantaged school populations.Originality/value - The findings indicate that students with a less optimal starting position, when it comes to health related behaviours, benefit most from a SEL programme. This indicates that schools with disadvantaged school populations could benefit most from a Health Promoting School approach. Show less
