Abstract
Language ideologies have become a dominant way of studying the relation between linguistic and social structures. They highlight the importance of taking shared, cultural conceptions of language and related practices as an object of analysis. Some worry the concept's increasing popularity will cause it to lose its analytic power and become normalized. This chapter re-emphasizes several important key interventions in language ideology research, as well as discussing promising new directions.
