Interest groups in Belgium

This chapter offers an in-depth analysis of the organization, political engagement, and policy influence of interest groups in Belgium. It begins by defining interest groups and clarifying typologies, distinguishing between economic groups, which include business associations and trade unions, and citizen groups focused on public causes and identity-based issues. The authors then characterize Belgium’s interest representation system as neo-corporatist with consociational roots, describing how federalism and strong institutional linkages among political parties and social groups shape interactions between interest groups and policymakers.
