The Zaydis are usually viewed as a Shi‘i group. Yet, throughout history they combined their Shi‘i stance with recognizably Sunni ideas. This flexibility, on the one hand, allowed the Zaydis to persist as one of the oldest continuously existing Shi‘i communities. On the other hand, it created and continues to create challenges for Zaydi identity.
