Abstract

How many scholars, how many laureates of the prestigious Spinoza prize have a record as member of a punk band? How many have students that named their pet dog after him, meant as a tribute to the animal lover Wil Roebroeks is? Taking out students to watch red deer and wild boar in the forest during courses on the palaeolithic? It reflects the egalitarian, relaxed atmosphere Wil fostered in combination with his professional relationships. The latter can be characterized by a critical examination of claims, a commitment to fostering debate by posing questions rather than providing answers, and a fearless integration of data and theories from various relevant fields at the international level.
