Insights into gastric cancer: towards tailored surveillance and treatment strategies

Abstract

Currently, the treatment regimen for the vast majority of patients with resectable gastric cancer follows a “one-size-fits-all principle,” where the standard regimen of perioperative chemotherapy and gastrectomy is applied to all patients, regardless of individual patient and tumor characteristics. In order to get the optimal cure for all gastric cancer patients, time has come to shift from the one-size-fits-all approach towards more tailored surveillance and treatment strategies. In this thesis, we focus on identifying potential subgroups of patients that may benefit from personalization of surveillance and treatment based on individual patient and tumor characteristics.
