Abstract
This chapter discusses the linguistic evidence that can be used to answer several questions about the Indo-European language family: Where were the reconstructible ancestors of the Indo-European languages spoken? When were they spoken? How did they end up being spoken in the areas where we find them in the historical period? The linguistic data allow for a number of hypotheses that can be tested by comparing them to the archaeological and archaeogenetic data.
