Abstract
Events in and around Ukraine occasioned a turning point for NATO. This chapter offers an overview of NATO’s adaptation since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and examines the main initiatives—centred on forward deployment and reassurance—adopted by the Alliance in the years that followed. It discusses NATO’s collective response as well as the contributions of different allies. The analysis is tethered to the challenge of designing NATO policies that credibly deter Russia, but do not provoke a security dilemma. The chapter concludes with an assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of NATO’s ongoing transformation.
