Introduction
Abstract
This Introduction introduces the reader to the volume's theme: Egypt's integration into political structures, commercial networks and cultural constellations in the eastern Mediterranean between 500 and 1000 CE. Providing an synthesis of the main findings of the volume's chapters, this Introduction argues not only that Egypt was fully integrated byt also that Egypt's political, commercial and cultural connections with other regions in the eastern Mediterranean cannot be studied separately and that each of these domains stands in a reciprocal relationship with the others.
