In the summer of 2023, a second archaeological fieldschool was conducted in the Tollense Valley. It was a joint Maritime and Underwater Fieldschool organized by Leiden University, the University of Göttingen, and the University of Rostock, in cooperation with the Landesamt für Denkmalpflege Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed.
This year’s project focused on a specific site in the valley, Weltzin 35, where a wooden structure, dated to the Bronze Age, was visible. During the field school, two trenches were excavated, providing an opportunity to gather more information about the mysterious wooden construction, as well as allowing
students to gain hands-on experience in underwater archaeological work.
