Dutch, Neerlandophone hip hop is extremely popular both as a music genre and as a youth culture in the Netherlands. In peak year 2018, eight out of ten (!) music streams in the Netherlands are Dutch, Neerlandophone hip hop. Underlying the popularity of hip hop is almost always a strong identity need of (mostly) young people. Therefore, when Dutch, Neerlandophone hip hop revives in recent years, it immediately raises the question of exactly what kind of identity questions hip hop addresses in the Netherlands. What stories do Dutch hip hop artists tell in contemporary Dutch, Neerlandophone hip hop and how do they form their cultural identity within it? This dissertation analyzes exemplary performances of contemporary Dutch hip hop artists Lijpe, SMIB, Abel, Ares and Jacin Trill, Famke Louise, Latifah, Lionstorm and S10 to study how they use the strategy of representing to create and negotiate their cultural identity along different axes of locality, ethnicity, religion, gender, class and age, in the digital age. Using multimodal discourse analysis of music videos, I analyze how representing different parts of the Netherlands enables Dutch artists construct and reconstruct cultural identities against a local background, within a global perspective.
